Best Civil War History from the Confederate Side?

I've been reading Bruce Catton's history of the Army of the Potomac, which is excellent. It occurs to me I've only ever read Civil War history from the Union side. So, it's all about those terrible Union generals and all the mistakes they made, and Lincoln's frustration, and how eventually superior manpower and manufacturing, and the Emancipation Proclamation, crushed the feisty Rebs. Now I'd like to read about what the Rebs were thinking during the Late, Great Unpleasantness. Who's the Bruce Catton of the South?

Slaveowners in the Attic

My girlfriend recently found out that one of the branches of her family owned slaves pre-Civil War era in North Carolina. This has really devastated her at some level, especially because she was previously so proud of her near generation family (1 or 2 back). Even worse, it's her last name so she feels that she's been tainted by this revelation. While I was trying to make her feel better, it occurred to me that I didn't quite know how one deals with the fact that your family history is entwined with an evil like slavery, and the fact that it was legal at the time doesn't really assuage her guilt from her ancestors' actions. Can't take the cold Northeast and wonder if Charleston would work?

Can't take the cold Northeast and wonder if Charleston would work? My husband and I recently moved from Los Angeles to the Eastern shore of Ct. for a variety of reasons mainly cost of living and seeking a closer knit community. Now that we have experienced a cold winter ( it's just starting!) we see that it isn't for us. Weather is a big deal and we thought we could handle it but the being stuck indoors, the layers of clothes, the desire to hibernate are all getting to us pretty quick. [more inside]

Walkable neighborhood in the South?

I live in TN, in a city that doesn't offer very good mass transit, everything is spread out and I have to drive everywhere. I would love to live in a neighborhood designed for people who want to walk to the local grocery, book store, park. Not just a neighborhood that may offer a coffee house, but a true walking neighborhood, and I need to stay in this part of the South... Is there anywhere in TN or AR like that? (Nashville to west TN and central to east AR).

I'm heading there in October for a Gamecock's football game, part of a continuing yearly visit to different SEC football venues, and would appreciate recommendations for convenient/quality/reasonable lodging, campus area bars and restaurants, music venues and other stuff that must be seen and done.
