So I procured an HD copy of "300" in 720p matroska (.mkv) format, but the 5.1 audio track won't play on my 2.1 speakers. Is there any way I can configure VLC or another media player to convert the audio to 2.1 format?

I know that
one-way mirrors aren't really one-way, but why isn't there an equivalent to this general concept when dealing with sound?
Why is it that you can't have a box which lets sound come out, but blocks it from going in?

Our apartment is 11 years old. Apparently that's not quite new enough for it to have been wired for sound when it was built, so I have to do it myself. Hardwood floors, but it's a wooden building so presumably the walls and ceiling are fair game. Can I run wires without tearing off molding or cutting holes in the ceiling? How? Can I do it myself, or is it the kind of thing that requires a professional? How do they do this stuff?

My second-generation iPod nano sometimes seems to lose right-channel sound, on any pair of ear buds, headphones, or speakers; only pushing the jack "up" towards the front restores the right channel, and even then only temporarily.
