Whence that whistle?

The clichéed two-part catcalling whistle that is performed at the sight of a hottie -- almost exclusively a man whistling at a woman -- that sounds like this. Rising, then falling. Where did that particular "tune" come from? What is the earliest recorded instance of its use? How was it popularized?

How to record two people at once who are walking without a third person recording it?

I need to record two people at the same time. I can't follow them around with a boom mic and I don't want them to be attached at the hip with a splitter to one recorder plus 2 lapel mics. How do I record two people, walking around, talking to each other? Do I need two recorders? AND if I have two recorders, how much of a pain will it be to edit the material/will it sound weird? How is this normally done? It is for the radio. [more inside]

"When the evenin' train goes by..."

I'm heading up to Chatsworth, CA tomorrow night to record some train whistles. How far away from the tracks should I be to get that nice, misty, dreamlike faraway sound? And is there a particularly quiet/desolate part of town where I can sit for a few hours and gather said recordings? Un-distorting a "jewish" sound clip.

I need help un-disorted a sound clip. There is a sound in Civilization 4 that plays whenever you discover Judaism. I could not place it--and I know my Jewish prayers--so I dug in the install folder and found the full file. It is heavily distorted in a way I cannot quite figure out. Help identify this instrument / sound.

There is a certain organ sound used in a lot of old prog music. A grindy organ sound. A perfect example is here, starting at 2:48. What is the instrument, and, if applicable, what is the setting / tone / whathaveyou (for example, if the instrument were a Hammond organ, what button would be pushed / levers flipped / etc. to get that sound? If a Moog, what dials would be turned, more or less?)?

(The music was) Faraway, so close

So I was listening to the sound check for the upcoming U2 concert yesterday from my house, which is just over 2km from the stadium. I could tell that the sound was immensely loud at the source even though it wasn't rattling my windows or anything. How did I know it was a huge sound at a distance rather than coming from nearby? What auditory cues tell us this?

Could an old (16th Century) cannon be heard five miles away?

Could very old (16th Century) cannons be heard five miles away? This is pretty important for a story I'm writing. I know that later, huge artillery pieces could be heard for many miles, but these would be small iron pieces for a small military outpost. On a calm day, could their sound travel that far?
