How do I stop a hardware beep in my desktop PC?

My IT Help Desk is stumped - can you help me? My computer is making what I can only describe as a hardware beep that I can't turn off. Muting Windows and disabling all system sounds doesn't work. Yet the beep only happens when I do certain things with the software - at first, it was only when trying to save a document into my virtual system in Word, but recently it's every time an email arrives in Outlook, which is just awful. This didn't used to happen, but once, many months ago, I accidentally pressed a random combination of keys and it started. I have no idea how to turn it off - and neither do the IT people. System details inside. [more inside]

How do I disable a pitch cancellation feature?

When I record myself singing a single note in Audacity, it records fine for a while. Then after about two seconds it cancels out that pitch as if it were background noise. (It will then record other notes, although the quality is severely affected.) It does this with both the built-in mic and my headset mic. How do I disable this feature? [more inside]

Help me identify the clichéd sound effect used to label locations in certain films and tv shows.

Is there a real world referent for that bleeping typing noise used in some films as a text (usually a location note) appears on the screen? It's a similar thing to that chunka-chunka typing sound used in the X-Files when the location of a new scene would be announced, but it's like a very rapid, high-pitched "beedeebeedeebeedeebeep" sound played while the letters appear. My pet Sound question

Despite taking several physics classes many years ago I don't think I understand how sound works. I was watching the excellent Behind the Sounds video about creating "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and thinking about how all those instruments at different registers ultimately are just recorded as one wave (in mono) or at most two (in stereo) that hit the ear. How can one wave carry such a density of information (like the Beach Boys) yet only carry information based on frequency, wave length and intensity? How can I tell that there are all these instruments when I only hear one wave?

Ring ring BUZZZZZZ

I'm looking for an android sound profile app that won't crash my phone. Ideally, I would be able to create a profile that had my alarm and ringer at full volume while disabling all other sounds. The last one I tried made my phone run really slowly and freeze intermittently, and a few of the other ones I've looked at don't seem to distinguish between notification types - I need the alarm to be a different control from email alerts and stuff. I'd really appreciate a recommendation! My googling has failed. Thanks in advance, MetaFilters.
