Why does my tongue keep getting hurt?

For the past month or so, I've had a range of different sore spots on my tongue, that feel like little cuts or raw patches. I'll have a sore spot for a few days in one spot (e.g. back left side of my tongue), all will be well for a few days, and then a few days or a week later I'll have another sore spot in a different location. What gives? [more inside]

need shoe recommendation for greenhouse/horticulturist

Mr. BellaStella works in a greenhouse. He stands in water a good portion of the day. For years he's been getting cheap Walmart shoes, which last about a month, if he's lucky. About once a year, he'll get an incredibly inflamed big toe, sometimes necessitating a trip to urgent care. He wears cotton crew socks with his shoes, so his poor feet are just fermenting all day. YANMD, but what do I ask my doctor about this hip/back pain? (In my 20s)

YANMD, but until I can see a doctor, I'm looking for guidance on what questions to ask. Student, mid-20s, male, non-smoker, somewhat overweight (not obese) but relatively healthy otherwise. I don't remember injuring my back or hip recently. Recently, after sitting or standing in place for long periods of time, I develop terrible radiating, bilateral pain in my lower back, right above my buttocks. It feels like I got home from two weeks of skiing! I have to stretch and walk around, and it gets better with exercise. What exercises should I do, and what questions should I ask my doctor? What's up with this post-fall soreness and bruising? Should I worry?

Two and a half weeks ago, I tripped and fell (with maximum drama and embarrassment) at work. I landed on the bottom of my knee (beneath the knee cap) and shin with great force onto a hard surface, concrete covered with berber carpet. It's still developing new and odd bruising (details within) and is still remarkably uncomfortable. The skin and knee bones don't hurt, but the soft tissue is very ouchy. Is this a "deep bruises take time to heal" thing or a "Martha, get your bruised self to the doctor" thing? [more inside]

How to prevent Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness? (DOMS)

I am rehabbing my hamstring from injury and after a hard day of rehab I am sore for about 4 days after. What steps can I take (before or after working out) to lessen the intensity and or duration of DOMS? And scientific data to back it up? I do ice baths immediately after exercise, and I re hydrate as much as possible during and after workout. I have a foam roller, I don't use it because any evidence of it helping has been anecdotal. Will it help? How about a lacrosse ball? Thanks.

What could be causing my constantly sore and tight legs?

Fitness (I think?)-Filter: for the last couple of years, I very frequently find my legs (both thigh and calves) sore and tight enough it's distracting. I started doing yoga, and that helped tremendously. But sometimes even that is not enough, and I am more interested in knowing what could be causing the sore legs? I don't really ever go to the gym, but I bike everywhere, walk a lot, and sit on my butt all day (I am a desk job person). The soreness gets worse when I am stressed out or when I am PMSing. Recurrent mouth canker sores

Has anyone battled with recurrent canker sores in the mouth? They hurt like crazy and I get them sometimes as often as 2 times in a month. I discussed with the dentist and general doctor but I don't think they have a cure to stop getting them other than ease the pain when you do get them. What is your experience?

Dealing with muscle soreness when returning to jogging

I have just ramped up my exercise a little, adding some intermittent jogging to my long walks (I'm every other day, or every third day). It has been several years since I did any sort of running more than an occasional dash to catch the bus, and my quadriceps are sore. Searching online, I have found advice that ranges from "do not do any more exercise until your muscles are no longer sore" to "power through no matter what!" MeFi, what should I do to mitigate muscle soreness and keep myself in good shape so I can keep exercising?

How should I feel the day after yoga?

I took an integral yoga class last night. Today, I am sore and achy -- I feel as bad as I did after taking my first boot camp aerobics class (which combined aerobics and weights and was super hard). I expected the kind of soreness you get when you've stretched a bit too much, or maybe the kind when you've walked further than usual, and your muscles feel open and a bit tired and maybe certain movements twinge a bit. Instead, I have a lot of deep muscle soreness, like I've been moving lots of heavy boxes, and I'm incredibly tired and headachy. Is this normal? [more inside]

Why do my thumbs hurt?

Over the past four or five months I've had pain and stiffness in my thumbs. It started in my right thumb (I'm right handed) and then I noticed it in my left as well. It now seems to be worse in my left - my left thumb hurts a bit more than my right and I can't bend it quite as far. What is likely to be causing this? [more inside]

What's up with my throat?

So I have been having this certain situation on and off for 8 years now. But lately, started last year, it looks like there's additional other discomfort added in my body. I am talking about my throat. I have this discomfort wherein I always feel the need to remove something from my throat, like phlegm or something. It's not actually painful, it's just annoying. And when I do so, sometimes there's some phlegm that comes out and sometimes, none at all. The phlegm that's coming out is also thicker and stickier than the normal ones we have when we are coughing or something. Right now, my neck is itchy also (as well as below my eyes) and like I said, it's uncomfortable because I feel as if there's something in my throat. [more inside]

sore buttocks while sitting
