Our TV, a stately Sony Trinitron that's served us since 1999, is dying. We need a new 42 inch-ish TV. I have no idea what to look for in this new flat/plasma/HD market. All I want to avoid is that godawful HD thing where old movies look like cheap soap operas and everything is too sharp and flat. No interest in a smart TV or 3D or anything like that. What should I buy to make our media diet of old movies and Netflix TV shows look the best?
Where can i buy a walkman online or at the very least a place that does repairs? I've been looking for a sony walkman for awhile now to no avail. All the ones i've found on Ebay either don't work or the radio works but it needs new parts. I would buy one that doesn't work if i knew i could send it somewhere for repairs. So, are there any websites besides ebay/craigslist that would sell old walkmans or do repairs that you know of?
I just got a phone from Amazon; we have verified that it is unocked, but when we put the sim card in (wind provider) it doesn't work, and in the settings is has it listed as "wind away" as though it thinks that I am out of their signal range. [more inside]
I recently purchased a highly discounted Sony RX1 that has a crack in the screen. I would like to replace it, but I cannot find a single thing online about how to. [more inside]
As of this writing, North Korea has had two Internet outages in 48 hours. A lot of people seem to watch when Internet service goes down for countries and companies. But I don't recall anyone saying North Korea's Internet had gone down until within the last couple of days. Has anyone reported North Korea's Internet going down in the past?
Every journalist on earth seems to be able to search the sony douments. Where are they?? Any search of terms like "sony stolen documents" or "sony hacked documents" brings up links to news stories about the documents, but not the documents themselves. nothing I could find on the smoing gun, wikileaks or wikipedia. I feel like a complete idiot. Where are they hiding in plain sight??
Can anyone tell me how these two (Sony DVM63PS vs. DVM60PRR) DVC tapes compare? Is this a trivial thing, here? Thanks! [more inside]
I'm trying to play Region 2 European DVDs on my US DVD player. I know you can hack DVD players to be region-free, and have read the previous threads on AskMeFi from several years ago, but I cannot find a hack for my specific Sony player, model DVP-SR210P. Any tips appreciated!
I just received a Sony Walkman NWZ-W262 for my birthday. I am psyched about filling it up with music and using it at the gym. I'd love to transfer some music from my own CD's, but most of them are in storage. I don't have money to pay for new music. What I do have is a bunch of youtube videos saved whose audio I'd love to use for workouts. [more inside]
A few months ago a friend gave me a VGN FW34OD that had had coffee spilled on it. I took it apart, cleaned with rubbing alcohol, everything worked fine except the keyboard--some keys didn't work at all, some would just repeatedly fire. Annoying. But it worked and was fine for watching movies and tv and stuff. [more inside]
After turning on Google 2-step verification, I am having trouble signing into YouTube on my Sony Blu-ray player. Any work-around? It seems like the Sony app makes no accommodation for 2-step verification.
Needing to get a new portable, because the battery in my workhorse laptop is borked, I ordered a refurbished 13" MacBook Pro - which I am typing on at the moment. So far, it seems fine for what I need, but I was wondering whether the hive mind could think of a better solution. Generic snowflake detail inside. [more inside]
PS4 is out, so time for me to get a PS3 and enjoy a sweet, sweet back catalogue of cheap, cheap games. But given that I also like to 'open' my consoles for media playing / emulator goodness, which new or used model should I buy? The main concern seems to be downgrading the official firmware from whatever it is now to 3.55 so that unofficial firmware can be installed. Is this easily done on all models (for example, the latest 12gb or 500gb jobs) or only older slim / fat models?

After being disappointed in yet another set of vacation photos because I didn't want to lug my dSLR around and ended up relying on my phone's mediocre camera, I've decided it's time for a high-end point-and-shoot. I've spent a couple weeks researching and have narrowed it down to two: the Sony RX100 and the Panasonic Lumix LX7. But I'm having a hard time deciding between the two! Do you have experience with either/both that can help me decide? I don't mind spending the extra money on the RX100 if it's worth it, but is it? [more inside]

Forgive me if this is more obvious than I expect, but I recently purchased a Sony a57 Camera, which I really, really enjoy. I will be doing some traveling, and purchased a Sigma 18-250mm 1:3.5-6.3 Macro HSM lens to pair with my camera. I have read that many people will use "lens profiles" to correct their images when they import them into Aperture. How can I find a lens profile for my lens? [more inside]
Hi all, my Sony Xperia J isn't reading sim cards. The sim card (3) that came with the phone works on other phones; the Xperia won't read other sim cards. What can I do to get this handset working? This is my work phone and I'm the breadwinner around here, so it's a bit urgent! Thanks. I've got two Win7 PCs to assist in fixing it.

CHALLENGE TIME! You are lent some expensive, professional grade video equipment for 18 hours and told that you may use it as you see fit in the time you have. Assuming little to no preparation beforehand, what do you do and/or film with it? Ideally you'd like the owner (or anyone else who sees your work) to be mildly impressed, knowing that you have no actual solo film making experience whatsoever. [more inside]

Since the Xbox 360 doesn't have a browser I am unable to connect to Xbox Live on a public internet connection because the 360 cannot give me access to the user agreement (if anyone knows a way around that, I'd like to know). Does anyone know if the PS3 has a browser capable of going on a public wifi and agreeing to the user agreement? I ask this because I am considering purchasing one for the library I work at. This will allow me to download updates for our games.

Back again. In a previous question I asked about Sony 8mm videotapes in the Philadelphia area. Sadly the price for converting Sony HG120 tape, Sony 8mm MP120 tapes and Sony Video8 MP60 tapes is too expensive for the 3 or 4 tapes I have. I'd rather not pay $150 when the tapes might be mostly blank, have crap on them, or otherwise not be worth spending $120 on. Any ideas? Should I try to buy a cheap camera for these? Anybody want to lend their for a few hours? [more inside]
I recently had to reinstall Windows (XP) on my PC to kill some malware. Subsequently, I reinstalled Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9, which I've been using for the last couple of years on this machine. I'm looking for an Sony TV spot for digital cameras. I'm guessing it was out around 2003. It had a guy walking around town asking anyone he could find about digital cameras police officers, construction workers, maybe a crossing guard. In one scene he is yelling down a manhole asking about megapixels. I've Googgled all I can Google and haven't been able to find it online anywhere. [more inside]
Using various relatively cheap adaptors, zoom lenses and lens-reversal rings (the greatest thing that ever happened to Nikon dSLRs!), I had fun taking lots of pictures of really tiny things with my previous cameras. However, now I have a Sony NEX-5k which, for its wonderful optics, great features and excellent resolution doesn't seem to have anything that I can find to do the same type of work. Can anyone recommend a hack or accessory that will let me take more pics like those I used to (or even of smaller things!)?

Sony NEX VG10 camcorder. Mac Mini, 2010 version, iMovie 09. Previously, video would import effortlessly (also into my own copy of iMovie 11) but now the device doesn't show up at all when we click the magic iMovie import button. Any clues about changes, bugs, or configuration issues that may be causing it to not appear? (The camera *does* show up as a USB disk, but I don't want to much with the massive files it generates directly - it tells me that the USB interface and cable are okay, though).
