Our academic software project needs a self-hosted software gallery or "store", not to sell anything but rather to let people find and download software. I think what would work well is a store/gallery system similar to http://apps.usa.gov and http://apps.shopify.com (except our software is not mobile, but rather desktop software). Does anyone know of an open-source "app store infrastructure" system that we could use as a starting point? [more inside]
I want to use a Google Hangout "On Air" for a project, but a tiny limitation is getting in the way. I would like to bypass the 'Press to Talk' functionality with a tiny browser script/hack/modification. My programming knowledge is tiny, but I am sure this could be done super super simply with a script loaded in the browser. Perhaps there's better solution. Any ideas? [more inside]

First of all, if there are better places on the internet where I should ask these types of questions about project and company management, please let me know. You guys are awesome, but I have plenty of other types of questions I'd like to ask in here, and, plus, I need to find the best source for answers to specific questions like this and fast. I need the proper technological solution for managing the flow of tasks and information of an entire company. The company is about 20 people in the office (half of them engineers) and about the same in the fab shop, so it's small. I am not the owner, but the oft-ignored second-in-command. See my other questions (here and here) for more details about my specific working situation. Right now, the company can only be described as chaotic. We have taken probably on probably too much work, people (especially me) aren't aware of what others are doing, collaboration takes place in inefficient bursts in the conference room, and the massive amount of information we generate per job and in the rest of the business is never easily found when needed. The owner causes a lot of these problems with his capricious style of running the business and tends to only add to the entropy, but I think that centralization of information and communication may save it before it's too late. I need the proper tool or tools to do this. I'll discuss where I am thus far, and we can go from there. [more inside]
I will be starting to work on several small, overlapping projects soon and need a lightweight tool. WANT: Ability to manage 2-3 resources (mostly me, really), schedule tasks, create and output Gantt charts. DO NOT WANT: The security hole of suck known as Java, so Project Libre, OpenProj and the like are right out. MEH, WILL ACCEPT IF NEEDED: Cloud app. I really prefer desktop programs for various reasons, but if the best solution is on the cloud, so be it. A PLEA: I'm going to a presentation on Office 365 tonight with a devotee of MS Project. Please arm me in advance against the call of the dark side! [more inside]

I have started a new position where I will be responsible for managing the projects (timelines, delegating work, etc) for a small group +/- 10 at the moment. This is basically the same question as this but two years later. This group has marginally used Asana, but nothing much has been done with it, and I am just checking to make sure there are no other, better options before I start really utilizing it. Thanks in advance!
If I've upgraded PHP on my Mac, should I now avoid all OS X Updates? I'm hosting a website on a Mac mini in a datacenter, and some of my software required a newer version of PHP than what's included out-of-the-box in OS X Mountain Lion. I keep getting the notification saying system updates are ready, and restart to install. But I'm scared it's going to overwrite my PHP upgrades and break everything. And it took me an insanely long time to get the PHP upgrade to work properly and play nicely with OS X Server.

Cute/funny characters, easy interface that I can learn quickly. Have Macbook Pro 13" and iPad - will want to export a video I can play on a PC. Can you help?

What do you call those images where each "pixel" is made up of a tiny photo? Usually the subphotos are thematically related to the main image. Extra special bonus if you can point me to software (how perfect would a GIMP plugin be? very perfect) that will generate one using a pile of images (cheating by adding tints to individual images is totally fine for these purposes). My office has recently had some funds open up and we are looking into investing in some statistical software to make our lives easier. We do a lot of work with distribution fitting, Monte Carlo analysis, and regression analysis with data sets that may contain left or right censored data. Unfortunately, we only have a few days to identify the best software package for our buck. Alternatively, the idea has been floated to download the free R software and spend the money on some training to get over the steep learning curve. What program or approach would be the best use of our money?

I am a Java developer. I am in a dead end job that used to be awesome but my company reorganized underneath us. Many of our group went to a sister company in the organization, including my old boss. I now report to someone in a distant city, though I am located in NYC. The relationship is good but he is hugely overloaded and very inaccessible and undependable. I've been interviewing, but I had two good possibilities fail recently. I think it's because I need to get to the next level. [more inside]

Career advice filter: I'm currently an experienced research assistant at a major research university (three years out of undergrad) who developed serious programming skills working on NLP projects doing parsing and information retrieval. My undergraduate degree is in Linguistics. I'm attempting a career transition into a more purely technical, software-oriented, possibly NLP-flavored position. Do you have any practical advice for ways that I can showcase my programming abilities and/or convince prospective employers that I am solid candidate (despite the lack of CS degree)? [more inside]
I have a copy of Quickbooks 2012 for Mac that I just put up for sale on ebay. (The program just wasn't for me.) I am getting a number of inquiries from interested bidders about the transfer of the license of the software. I do not recall if I ever officially registered the software after i installed it or not. I played around with it for a little bit and decided it wasn't for me. I uninstalled the software and it has sat in a box until I put it up today. How do I go about ensuring that the software and license have my info removed so that the winning bidder can install it on their computer with little to no hassle? The Intuit/Quickbooks website offers a lot of contradictory information. Much thanks.

Is there a live streaming audio player for Windows that will add a predefined delay? I actually need a delay of 5-10 minutes and preferably the ability to vary the delay as I listen. I saw a delay option in VideoLAN but the stream never starts; I guess the delay is much too long for it to deal with.
Back in the very late 90s a friend passed along a copy of a configurable Mac program that acted as sort of a screen saver (but I don't think that was its primary purpose) that produced different kinds of firework-like vector graphics that moved and changed in time to whatever music you had playing on the computer at the time. There were a number of variables you could control, including the design of the graphics, and maybe the colors, too. I remember on a couple of occasions needing to get a new copy and the only place I ever found it was on Macster; I'm almost positive it wasn't commercially available, but it was probably shareware. I want to say it was German, but I may be thinking of the game Oxyd. Does anyone remember what this program was, and if there is a modern-day equivalent for Mac?
I was reading an article about software companies modifying games in clever ways in order to annoy pirates - essentially rendering the game unplayable. How does this work - how does the game identify whether the copy is pirated or legit in terms of triggering the mod? And are non-game programs doing something similar ie. erasing files or making software non-functional?
I love the idea of doing everything electronically - easy backups, filing, being able to search, etc. Problem is, I much prefer the tactile experience of writing on paper. I have this delusion that I'm not able to be my "full creative self", whatever that means, unless it's with pen/pencil. I know that's just procrastination/laziness talking, but I am curious: did you struggle with this? Did you find something that made the typing process as enjoyable as writing, or did you just train yourself out of wanting to physically write? [more inside]

I'm applying for a job in automation software development but from what I have on my resume, I've only touched upon the subject. However, what my resume doesn't mention is that I was active in the Warcraft botting community developing profiles and behaviors and made programs that botted various online games, surveys, and web forms. I'd be very happy to "go legit" as it were and use my skills for good, but mentioning that I have a good background in automation would prompt questions of specific examples and I don't know how I could talk about it without sounding like an unethical person.
