Starting a software company, as an academic

I am an academic about to get tenure, but I'm thinking about an alternative career trajectory. In particular, I have an idea for software that (I believe) could be revolutionary, related to my field of study. I'm thinking of quitting my job to pursue this. [more inside]

Do I quit my job and do a web development bootcamp?

Student discounts for software?

I am graduating college this year and wondering what student discounts on software ought I take advantage of? I am aware of Tableau, Max/MSP and Microsoft Office Suites offering academic discounts but would like to be aware of anything that becomes prohibitively expensive after my scholarly status ends. Are there any professional organizations I can join such as the ACM that offer book or software discounts as well?

Life after coding

I'd like to hear about people who have left the computer programming/software development field, particularly for jobs that don't involve sitting in an office all day. If you've done this, how did you manage it? How old were you, and how long had you been in the software industry? What kind of job did you end up in? Do you like your new job? [more inside]

How to transition into software without a CS degree

Career advice filter: I'm currently an experienced research assistant at a major research university (three years out of undergrad) who developed serious programming skills working on NLP projects doing parsing and information retrieval. My undergraduate degree is in Linguistics. I'm attempting a career transition into a more purely technical, software-oriented, possibly NLP-flavored position. Do you have any practical advice for ways that I can showcase my programming abilities and/or convince prospective employers that I am solid candidate (despite the lack of CS degree)? [more inside]

How to talk about skills gained unethically during a job interview

I'm applying for a job in automation software development but from what I have on my resume, I've only touched upon the subject. However, what my resume doesn't mention is that I was active in the Warcraft botting community developing profiles and behaviors and made programs that botted various online games, surveys, and web forms. I'd be very happy to "go legit" as it were and use my skills for good, but mentioning that I have a good background in automation would prompt questions of specific examples and I don't know how I could talk about it without sounding like an unethical person.

Case Studies required of Software Business Failures?

I would be interested in hearing case studies for software business failures that have occurred due to one or both of the following factors: - Wholesale replacement of entire engineering staff (e.g. firing all staff in original location and replacing with staff in a new location). - Winding down product development on existing products with the expectation that it will be replaced by a new platform in the future (I'm thinking along the lines of Ashton Tate here and their DBase product). I would also be interested in hearing any examples of where either of these strategies has been put into effect, and it been a success, rather than a failure. [more inside]
