I want to use a Google Hangout "On Air"
for a project, but a tiny limitation is getting in the way. I would like to bypass the 'Press to Talk' functionality with a tiny browser script/hack/modification. My programming knowledge is tiny, but I am sure this could be done super super simply with a script loaded in the browser. Perhaps there's better solution. Any ideas? [more inside]

The way I research (academic or otherwise) is increasingly incompatible with the tools I have. Reams of handwritten notebooks, and hundreds of word docs vs a highly tagged website only add to my self-created confusion.
I'm drawn to Tinderbox software as a possible solution, but as an adamant PC user I'm locked out.

Perhaps this is just a fantasy, but is there any application or online tool that could search through the references of an article I have saved as a PDF, in order to check whether I have those cited articles in my larger PDF library? It would be perfect if it would highlight, link, or somehow display cross-referenced relationships between all my articles. I am already familiar with many referencing/PDF organization software such as Papers
, and Devonthink
. I suppose what I have in mind is a similar tool, but with the additional power of something like ISI Indexes. I have a fairly large library (about 300 references that I'm actively using, and more than 2000 total) and I'm just trying to get some "big-picture" grasp of how all these sources relate to one another.

I am the secretary of a minor political party in Oregon. We need to do secure remote internet voting of about 55,000 members for elections by district. I have a voter file which is basically a flat file with voter information plus information about the legislative districts plus a unique ID.
Our idea is to send each member a card with the unique ID that, once a person logs in, will enable them to vote in all races associated with the districts they live in. Can anyone recommend a good system?

Foreword: No ruby background aside from basic tutorials.
Here's the deal. I've tired the Agile Web Dev (2nd edition) book for rails, very out of date. I need to learn something. I want to learn ruby on Rails. I've gone through the Rails guide on creating a rails blog (http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started_with_rails.html
So, rather then buy it now (3rd edition of book as beta) or just wait, I want to get on the fast track to learn rails 2.2 (soon to be release 2.3) .
Basically I'm looking for a online resource super cheap or free that provides quality information relating to rails and ruby.
Help and suggestions welcome

I'm sure this question will not make me the most popular student at the dance, but is there a way to identify (via IP) machines running BitTorrent clients within an internal network (ie. work)?
My company has around 50 employees, and the old, "Please don't torrent at work" doesn't seem to be doing much good anymore.
It brings our email and web browsing to a near standstill, and dropping by the "usual suspects" is not only tiresome, but doesn't seem to find all the sources of traffic any longer.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

How can I create a social networking site? I am in Southern California (Inland Empire/Orange County) and interested in building a social networking/message board/blog site along the lines of Sermo
that isn't really about customizable media and meeting friends, as much as it is for people within a certain specialty, let's say the veterinary community, to share their ideas about their expertise with peers, receive newsletters relevant to their work, and ask for their peers' opinions or advice. I work for a non-profit and am trying to come up with web-based software solutions for two problems that we face on a daily basis.
1. We need a way of sharing huge amounts of information (mostly press articles), without descending into information overload.
2. The various staff who do my kind of job around the country are also constantly looking for ways to share new ideas and strategies. For this, I'm looking for a secure way to share documents, that can be tagged with different identifiers. More below (apologies for the long question) [more inside]
