I am trying to build a blended learning web-app for a professor to replace his Blackboard-based discussion forum. I think a great model is RapGenius's annotation system. Do open-source clones exist for this? Any out-of-the-box tools I can quickly hack together to mimic RapGenius's annotation system?

My pre-k boy LOVES video games and adventure/superhero TV shows. It would be great to harness some of that love for learning purposes. What are your recommendations for software or online games that do that? We're a Mac household.

Is there any software (online or Mac) that will help me to make clean, simple custom maps for a classroom? Ideally, I'd start with a simple, blank outline map, then be able to add features one at a time. (For example, perhaps I'd select "Ohio River" from a dropdown menu, and then it would appear on the map.)

Perhaps this is just a fantasy, but is there any application or online tool that could search through the references of an article I have saved as a PDF, in order to check whether I have those cited articles in my larger PDF library? It would be perfect if it would highlight, link, or somehow display cross-referenced relationships between all my articles. I am already familiar with many referencing/PDF organization software such as
Papers (Mekentosj),
Sente, and
Devonthink. I suppose what I have in mind is a similar tool, but with the additional power of something like ISI Indexes. I have a fairly large library (about 300 references that I'm actively using, and more than 2000 total) and I'm just trying to get some "big-picture" grasp of how all these sources relate to one another.

Is there anything out there to help me manage the data for a small private language school? We don't need timetable software but rather something simple to help us produce monthly records, attendance sheets, teacher hours. Bonus for cross platform or web based. Extra bonus for something in Spanish too...

Can anyone recommend easy to install, cross platform monitoring software for Mac OS X - that is, something that would allow a parent, employer or teacher to, from their PC, monitor the screen of a Macintosh? Will remote desktop do this? Is it relatively easy to install?
