I had a brilliant idea the other day: instead of buying all sorts of different socks and cursing the gods when I lose one of a matching pair, I should buy bunches of matching socks in the same color so that any two go with each other. Help me enact this plan by finding socks that meet my criteria. Snowflake details inside.

I was thinking about Steve Jobs buying a closet full of black turtlenecks so he didn't have to make that decision every day. I also saw some recent charts that showed purchasing trends for different age groups, and noted that once people buy good flatware they don't make an additional purchase. It occurred to me that, at my age (mid-forties) I could conceivably purchase a lifetime supply of socks.
What are items that a person of average means could purchase in sufficient quantities to last them the rest of their life?

Where can I purchase more
socks like these? Acquired by my husband over 10 years ago at an airport in the Netherlands, they are long-lasting, comfortable, made of wool, have the word "TRAIL" embroidered in red across the instep, three horizontal red stripes on the ball of the foot, and what may be a size "3-46" in red across the toe.

I'm looking for a replacement pair of Spongebob socks - yes, really. It's a mother's day gift, and a replacement for a much-loved pair. They are very tall, thick and soft and warm, sized for an adult, white with a colorful grid pattern like a Mondrian painting (yes, really) interspersed with large yellow squares featuring Spongebob making a face. They had little yellow square plush Spongebob "knobs" or cloth buttons of some kind at the top.

Tall leather Frye boots: do I need tall boot socks with them? I'm thinking about getting a pair of Frye boots, and for some reason, the tallest boots are around $100 bucks cheaper than the lower rise boots at my local shoe store. Can I wear regular ankle length socks with the taller boots without chaffing on the back of my calf, or do I need full length boot socks to be comfy?

No matter what kind of socks I buy, expensive brand name ones, or just cheap regular ones, my socks eventually tear at the toe end. It's usually right where my big toe is. I'm talking about my dress socks, not the regular ones I wear with sneakers.
I found one pair that lasted for a long while but then finally started to tear. What's the deal? Is the material perhaps? Is it my feet? Am I buying the wrong brand?

I'm looking high and low for men's no show socks in earth tone colors, but coming up empty. The ones I've found are either not really no show (like they're not truly below the ankle - and I'd like them to be below shoe-top level), or they're too expensive. I need some for about $7 per pair, max. And non-white and non-black is a must (earth tones are what I'm really hoping for, but I may have to settle for gray.). Please help! Thanks!

I'm a recent Smartwool socks convert. I love that they are they are non-scratchy, moisture wicking and stay warm and dry and comfortable all day. I'd like to get a few more pairs, but the ones I like (Hiker Street, men's medium) are ~$20. Anyone have a just-as-good alternative, or is Smartwool really so unique that it justifies the pricetag?

Recommendations for crew-length dress socks for my sweaty-footed boyfriend? He has hyperhydrosis and is looking for moisture-absorbent dress socks that hit right below or at the calf.
Regarding Smartwool: we live in south Florida, where the temperature is 90 degrees for half the year, so he's concerned that wool will make his feet very hot and sweat even more.

Why do male porn actors so often wear socks and shoes while otherwise naked in adult movies? It's true that high heels are prevalent among the females but at least one could argue there's some aesthetic point to that. The guys' choice of footwear, meanwhile, is nearly always awful. Is there a practical or cultural reason for the men wearing socks, shoes and sometimes hats and sunglasses?
