I cannot for the life of me remember the name of a particular social psychologist (personality psychologist? plain old psychologist?) who I learned about in a Psych 101 class. All I remember is he had an eyepatch and an unusually colorful or bizarre personal life.

I'm looking for some good, meaty non-fiction to read over Christmas break while I'm home from grad school. Something with difficult ideas, yet readable and contemporary, and taking a fairly "big picture" view of a particular field. Any suggestions? Examples below.

This recent link on the blue reminded me how fascinating ethnography can be. Now I have a hankering for some well-written works of anthropology or sociology that offer insight on different people and different ways of life. Please recommend some good books for me! This is for "pleasure reading," so really dense jargon is a turn-off, but they don't need to be written for a popular audience.

According to some sources, Marx argued that the mechanism of social change was the contradiction between the material forces of production and the relations of production, whilst elsewhere it is argued that Marx saw social change as arising from the conflicting interests of different social classes. My question is, assuming that Marx stated that both of these contradictions brought about social change, what is the relationship between class conflict and the conflict between relations and forces of production?

I sometimes see the phrases 'to go on' and 'going on,' enclosed in quotation marks, mentioned in philosophy, sociology, social science, etc. To 'go on' seems to mean to accomplish everyday activity. But where does the phrase come from? Wittgenstein? Is it so obvious that no-one needs to cite it? Thanks!

Please help me find statistics on victimless crime. More specifically, I’m looking for statistics showing what proportion of U.S. crime during a given period—a month, a year, whatever—is considered victimless. (Without endorsing this definition, for this project I consider victimless crime to be crime that doesn’t involve direct harm to others: drug use not linked to violent trafficking, sodomy (pre-Lawrence v. Texas), public nudity, etc.)

A few years ago I formulated a sociological theory about the evolution of terms used to refer to those afflicted by certain classes of disabilities, whether physical or mental, in which more functional members of the class resent being "bundled" with less functional members and are hence in a constant, mostly subconscious, quest for differentiation. This leads to development of ever more benign terms ("handicapable!") which themselves quickly become associated with the whole, therefore perpetuating the cycle. The theory seemed obvious to me when I thought of it, but I've yet to see it espoused or debunked elsewhere. Have you? Or, failing that, do you see any obvious arguments for or against it?
