Supervisory experience I have... and don't

I'm applying for a management position. It is within my current job field, and my boss would still be my boss. The two year supervisory/management requirement is a hard rule. HR is just that way. It's a position which I completely qualify for, in terms of skills and experience but not in that perfect way. [more inside]

Are there organisations in the UK to help people escape hate groups?

I'm awkward in office settings, should I become a social worker?

I was accepted into an MSW program next fall to become an LCSW. I’m concerned about this working out because I have a hard time fitting into office cultures. I particularly have problems with women--and since they dominate the agencies I’m wondering if I should do this? A few scattered snowflakes inside. [more inside]

Clinical or academic term for "make work" situations?

I'm having trouble searching for articles on this because I don't know the right terms. It's when you have a job that isn't a real job but is instead a very simplified job paid way above the market value in order to provide income and occupation to someone who is otherwise unable to get employment, e.g. creating a simple lawn mowing job for someone with intellectual challenges when you could hire a professional to do the job twice as fast and much cheaper. Does anyone know the correct phrases I can use to find academic or clinical articles on this? I'm especially interested in the phrases social workers would use.

Should I get a counseling or social work degree in Oregon?

My partner and I are contemplating a move to Oregon in the next few years. I will have a masters in conflict resolution but would really like to become a mental health counselor. All the research I've done thus far points to a master of social work as I can be a counselor and have more job availability/flexibility. Part of me would like my second masters to just teach me the theory and effective skills of counseling rather than everything that comes with a MSW. I worked at a women's center and studied feminism as an undergrad so I am well aware of privilege and oppression in systemic form. If my plan was to settle in Oregon could I make it with a masters in counseling or are MSW's more easily finding jobs? This question is specific to the job climate in Oregon.

Should I Keep Working Toward My Masters in Social Work? Now or Later?

In a nutshell: I'm almost 38 years old, happily married, and am currently raising 3 kids (the youngest is 9). I work full-time at a job that I love – and that loves me back - but which doesn't pay particularly well. My husband's income compensates for that. We are decidedly middle class with some debts, low savings, and a mortgage. I have a (Canadian) college diploma in social services that's a little over 2 years old at this point. I am trying to decide whether to further my education - and whether to do it now or later. [more inside]

How much praise is too much?

Our thirteen-month-old foster daughter's social worker is fantastic. She regularly goes above and beyond what's required for our kid's case. In the ten months we've worked with her, I've regularly thanked her for all she does to make our lives as foster parents and our foster daughter's life better, and twice I've called to tell her supervisor how great she is. Is it overkill to keep calling her boss to report that she's awesome? How can I best thank her for her service to our foster daughter? [more inside]
