Seniors, Social Security, and Sallie Mae

Thinking ahead to my eventual retirement, I phoned Sallie Mae earlier this year, and spoke with a rep who was easy to chat with, and seemed well-informed and helpful. I asked her if there was any sort of discount or other concession made for student loan payments once the debtor retired and began drawing Social Security. Her answer was that, good news, once I provide Sallie Mae with documentary evidence that I am drawing Social Security, the balance of my loans would be waived. [more inside]

DEAFENING DRUMBEAT OF LOWERED EXPECTATIONS

Listening to NPR I heard them saying, a little too casually, that "Generation Y is preparing for a future without any Social Security benefits". REALLY?? I did _NOT_ get that memo. [more inside]

Safety tips without pop-ups/unders

Please recommend good websites and blogs about computer/internet/social media security issues, someplace where I can find out about the latest scams, phishing attempts, malware, etc. I don't really like Snopes, due to the pop-under ads (what is up with that, anyway?). Thank you.

Could this be a scam?

A couple of wannabe college students showed up at my door asking if I would be interested in a $1,500 home security system and lifetime service in exchange for posting a security company sign in my front yard. They left me a card to fill out that asked for all my crucial information, including social security number and date of birth, that had boxes to check for accepting, or rejecting, the promotional offer. The card they left didn't have the name of the alarm company on it, a website address, phone number, nada. What do the guys get out of it? The company pays them $500 toward their tuition for every customer they sign up. What does the company get out of it? Supposedly, free lawn signeage/advertising.

Why shouldn't we privatize Social Security?

All the hand-wringing about privatizing Social Security makes me realize I'm in the dark on this one. I don't have a finance/economics background, so could someone explain this concept to me as if I were a ten-year old?

Why is privatizing SS so bad? I'm 31--once the baby boomers cash out their stash, my generation and those younger ain't gonna have jack.....so what's the harm in privatizing it? Or is that scenario not accurate? What can we do to SS besides privatize? I'm not defending privatization, I'm just looking for information.
