I'm going to Whistler for a conference. I've never been skiing or snowboarding before and I'd like to. But I know so little about winter sports that it is hard to make the right choices or to even know what I need to know. [more inside]

I want to spend Jan-Apr of the 2010 season snowboarding in the Salt Lake City resorts. Can you guys help me figure out where to live in SLC (three months at a resort is just too much $$, and plus I'd like to be able to get away from the mountain on the days I don't ride) , and the best way to go about securing a place? I'm looking for a resort in Tahoe that has both (a) good beginner snowboarding trails and (b) snowshoe trails. Nice to haves: group snowshoe outings and snowshoe rentals.

I'm looking for gift ideas for a family member who is into snowboarding. He already has all the basics but I do know he needs a new pair of goggles (which shouldn't be hard to find).
I'm also interested in any cool accessories that you could recommend beyond the basic stuff your average snowboarder would have. The price range I'm looking for is around $50.
Thanks in advance!

Cousin and spouse in NYC, we're in Toronto. We'd like to meet halfway to go snowboarding in January. I only know the Quebec ski hills so any suggestions would be much appreciated. Hotels, condos and cottages are all equally acceptable.

Living in Lake Tahoe(!) My sister-in-law has a chance to live out in Lake Tahoe for the ski season. She'll be working, either on a mountain or off, but she doesn't have a job lined up yet. My question (after a chat with her) is about where she might want to live. Been to Tahoe? Lived there? Help a recent college grad have a blast. [more inside]

I'm taking a snowboarding trip to Wyoming this winter break and I will be using a plane at least three times during this period. Naturally, I will be carrying a snowboard and all my other equipment on the plane. How should I go about protecting my board? Should I just use a soft case to protect from scratches or should I be more concerned? Also, are there any products anyone can specifically recommend?

Horribly specific somewhat-old videogame question: Is SSX3 on the Playstn2 really that much better than SSX Tricky? Specifically, is SSX Tricky worth keeping for the courses or should I just chunk it in exchange for SSX3. I have come in late to owning a PS2 (just got the new model as a gift) and picked up SSX Tricky, looking for a 1080 fix. But then I find out I have the older version of the game, and that the current installment makes the version I have obsolete. Snowboarding nerds, please advise. I want SSX3 but basically don't know if I should trade in SSX Tricky for it, or keep the older version, too. Thanks! [more inside]
