Fit to Snowboard

I'm going to learn to snowboard this winter. I have at least a month to prepare. What sort of exercises and activities can I do to increase my fitness for this activity? I have access to a gym, skating rink, hiking, biking, etc., and a recently acquired snowboard that is sitting in my livingroom. From what I have read in past askmetafilter questions on somewhat similar topics, maybe I should start going to the skating rink. What do you think of yoga (which is an option)? Should I be trying to increase my aerobic fitness with some running? I have to admit, I am a bit of a chicken shit to try longboarding and there is no surfing.

Novice Snowboard Costs, Zero To Sixty?

How much should I budget to both equip myself and my wife for snowboarding and get us enough instruction so that we enjoy it? I mean, we own nothing with the possible exception of some gloves we could use, and we want to get ourselves outfitted and capable of boarding happily all day at places like Heavenly or Whistler. What will this cost, or, barring that, what do we need to budget for?

Vermont ski resort bus trips from New Jersey?

Anyone know of any Vermont ski resort bus trips that leave from New Jersey? I just finished reading this entry on a Times blog about about day trips to Vermont from New York City. What I want to know is if similar trips are run out of New Jersey, preferably North Jersey.

I've seen the NJ Ski Council trips, but most are longer than a day and require memberships to ski clubs. Aren't there any ski shops that organize no-commitment day trips like the ones mentioned on that Times blog, but from Jersey?

Elderly Snowboard Conundrum

Attn Experienced Snowboarders: How do I find bindings for this snowboard? Here's the problem: we went to buy bindings for this thing, and were told that it was out of date, and they didn't make bindings for it anymore. (The holes are too wide apart for the new bindings.) It's a Morrow Rail, and here are two pics. The problem is that we don't really know what to look for in order to make it usable/find the right used bindings, and we really *really* need to save money if we can. (Yeah, I got this one on Freecycle, but I didn't know getting the bindings was going to be so hard.)

So, can anyone give me any guidance on how to find used bindings for this snowboard?

Snowboarding Gift Ideas

I'm looking for gift ideas for a family member who is into snowboarding. He already has all the basics but I do know he needs a new pair of goggles (which shouldn't be hard to find).

I'm also interested in any cool accessories that you could recommend beyond the basic stuff your average snowboarder would have. The price range I'm looking for is around $50.

Thanks in advance!

Snowboarding gear for the small-footed.

I love snowboarding and want to get my own gear! Yay! I have tiny feet! Boo! I started snowboarding last season, and am looking for a beginner-level snowboard. I'm not really short (5'4") but am otherwise little (100lbs, size 5 feet).

I was told that my rental snowboards are too wide for my feet -- my toes and heel don't reach the edges of the board. This means that I have to shift my weight really far forward to get onto my toe side.

From what I understand, I want a half inch of overhang on each side, which means a 23cm waist.

Am I getting the right advice? Any recommendations for a brand/model that would fit me? I am not above using a kids' snowboard.

Binding suggestions will also be gratefully accepted (I have Salomon Fusion boots).

In addition, does anyone have any experience with Siren snowboards? I think they're pretty but can't find any specs on them online.

Things to do in Denver

Should I go to Denver for a month if I want to ski a lot? My job moves me around several times a year for short-term projects, my next one will be in for the month of January. I get some input into where I go, and Denver might be once of my choices. I'm wondering if it would be a fun place for me.

I generally don't like cold weather, but I love snowboarding/skiing. I'd be living in the Cherry Creek neighborhood, or somewhere very close to that. I'll be working 5 days a week, but only during the evenings and will have my days free 6 days a week. I've read that the nearest ski resorts are about an hour away. Are those close by resorts any good? Keep in mind my previous skiing experience has been limited to Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, so I'm okay with non-world-class skiing, but I don't want to move to Denver if I'm only gonna be able to get to mediocre resorts.

Also, how is Denver for non-skiing outdoor activities? It looks like temps are gonna range generally between 20-50 degrees. I've never lived in a winter climate like that, so I'm not really sure what to expect. Do people mostly just stay inside except to go to work and go home?

Pricing a used snowboard for resale/auction: Please Help!! I'm on the board of directors for a local theater company, and each year we do a live/silent auction for fundraising. I'm constantly bugging my friends to give me their stuff - so that we can auction it off and keep paying our stellar staff!

A friend, through her employer*, passed on to me a used snowboard for our group to auction off. Here are the details:

Brand: K2
Model: Eldorado
Size: 163

Boots: appear to be a different brand? "Switch" brand?
Case: Dakine brand

I have googled the hell out of this board, but do not find it. It appears to be older than 07-08 season. But, I'm out of steam. I'm not a snowboarder, and know (or care) little about this stuff.

Tell me, hivemind, what would be an appropriate minimum auction price for this board/case combo? Would $100 be too much?

Also, relatedly: do people just not buy used snowboards? I don't find a huge market out there, so it's worth asking. Perhaps there's something inherent in snowboarding (and/or personalizing one's board) that makes second-hand purchases ill-advised or taboo.

Help? Comments? Thanks!!!

*The board was abandoned at her employer's office building; after contacting everyone on staff, no one claimed it; so, they were going to give it to Goodwill when my friend asked if she could pass it on to me.

Switching from a board to skis?

This snowboarder wants to give skiing a try. How to go about it? Background: I'm an intermediate snowboarder--comfortable on a board, but not to the jump/flip/high, high speed stage. I started on a snowboard and have never been skiing, and I'm curious. So next time I'd like to give it a try. What can I expect? The obvious suggestion is to take a lesson, but I'm not in a English-speaking country, so for the sake of argument let's assume an English lesson is out.

My wife also boards with me, and she skied when she was younger, and said she could help me with it, but I'm curious if I need a lot of tutelage. More specifically, has anyone made the transition from snowboard-only to skis? How did you do it?

Nice rack.

Design for a home-made wooden snowboard/ski/snowshoe rack? Okay, I want to build a snowboard/ski/snowshoe rack which will sit on our covered porch in the winter. A typical load would be:

2 pairs of snowshoes
2-4 snowboards
2-4 pairs of skis
poles for the above

It needs to be fairly simple to build and it would be nice if it could be moved for the summer, or at least transform into a rack for work clothes and boots. So standalone would be best. I'll be making it out of pressure treated lumber.

Any ideas? The Jam Rack is the closest I've seen but it's not stand-alone, or big enough.

Ski Vacation booking - acommodation recommendations?

Where’s the best place to book an all-inclusive ski vacation? Where’s a good powder accessible condo with a view/hottub? Wanted: Place where we can get powder (CO, UT, WY or BC) for the week of 9-17 March and that has some nightlife.

Travelocity, expedia, preliminary standard google searches no good. All give hotels in metropolitan areas or incredibly overpriced ski packages. We’d like to pay ca. $1200 each for flight, lodge and lift ticket for ca 6.days – we’re coming from NYC.

We’d like a condo (pref ski-in ski-out….although a hotel isn’t out of the question), with access to a hottub and access to a nice view. If you just know the answer to this, that’d be great.

We’d like to get some kind of discount for booking flight+lift ticket+accommodation in one go, although if you think that’s a bad idea and you know of a particular steal for pairs or single examples of F/LT/A then let me know too….. Preferably a website/company with which you’ve had good experiences.

And a pony. Yes a ski pony. OK No pony wanted

SnowboardFilter: Help me find some new gear.

I need new snowboard, boots, and bindings, but I'm not sure what to look for or how much I should be spending. I bought my first snowboard / boots / bindings around 4 years ago and last season they finally died. I got the whole set for a little over $200 when I bought it. The bindings were strap in and I think the company that made the whole set was SnowJam.

I'd imagine the style of snowboarding you plan on doing has a lot to do with the kind of snowboard that you would want to get. That said, I'm (slowly) learning jumps but I have the most fun on glade style runs.

So what should I look for in brand, telltale signs of quality (or the lack thereof), and price? Are there some solid review sites out there that I can find more information from? Does anyone know of a good package (board / boots / binding) deal, or is better to build the set ala carte?

swoosh! swoosh! snow in europe

Ski/Snowboard group trip in Europe - too many options, don't know where to start. I've been sifting through search results and I'm as lost as ever. France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, aughhhh! Too much info!

Here are the facts, can the hivemind help me settle on where to concentrate?

Group size - <10, all located in England, varying skills.
Length of stay - ~5 days, preferably over a weekend
Time of year - Jan/Feb (I know, peak season but I don't think we can throw together something earlier than that)
Criteria considered:

- On the cheapside: Don't need a fancy resort... a more low key mountain with a decent cabin would be great. But no hostels please, we're too old. =P
- Reasonably easy to get to - with a group of ten I don't want getting there to be a headache.
- Decent nightlife - again, with a group we'll be hanging out together most of the time so we don't need a hyper nightscene, but a good smattering of bars would be great.

Thanks everyone!

I just got a Burton File Guide Kit to tune the edges of my snowboard. I am pretty sure i understand it; but just in case, does anyone know where to find directions for installing the files into the handpeice?

Sounds of Shredding

Music for Snowboarding. I need help creating a playlist for a friend to use while snowboarding next week. I'm thinking rap (think: Beasties, NWA) and aggro-rock (think: Tool, Rage Aganst the Machine), but am looking for specific songs, artists and albums. Old or new, but loud. The more eclectic the better!

Protection for a snowboard on an airplane?

I'm taking a snowboarding trip to Wyoming this winter break and I will be using a plane at least three times during this period. Naturally, I will be carrying a snowboard and all my other equipment on the plane. How should I go about protecting my board? Should I just use a soft case to protect from scratches or should I be more concerned? Also, are there any products anyone can specifically recommend?
