My partner and I have been living in our apartment since May. On the first of December, new tenants moved into the apartment two floors below us. They are both heavy smokers, and now we can smell it throughout our apartment, and the stairwell and hallway between our apartments, all the time. We don't like this very much, but what can we do? It's two am on Christmas morning and my wife and I haven't slept because we feel we are suffocating from all the cigarette smoke in my parent's house. This is our first night of four, and my wife is upset, wondering if she can maybe sleep in the car (it's minus twenty outside, so no). How can we make this bearable, or, failing that, how can we explain to my parents that we have to leave already? [more inside]

FabricSoftenerFilter. Will using fabric softener reduce the tendency of my clothes to pick up particulate matter from secondhand smoke? I usually avoid the stuff since I'm told the extra chemicals aren't necessarily good for you, but neither is tobacco. Any tips on the relative effectiveness of fabric softener/dryer sheets/vinegar/a piece of aluminum foil appreciated.
