Where can I buy a kiseru in the Osaka area tomorrow? (A kiseru is a traditional Japanese smoking pipe.) I have looked at all kinds of shops and haven't found any. I'd rather not order online. Some people back home want them as souvenirs. I am staying in Osaka, so I am within easy range of Kobe, Kyoto, Nara, etc.

A friend in Canada heard Stuart McLean on CBC's Vinyl Cafe telling his story about Dave giving up smoking, and recommended it to me as hilarious. I have scoured the internet searching for this story, finding only a catalog of Vinyl Cafe broadcasts which lists "Dave attempts to give up smoking" on 23-Feb-2002, repeated on 17-Aug-2002 and 30-Oct-2004 as "Dave gives up smoking." I cannot find this story listed as a title in any of his books or CD recordings. Sadly, CBC radio podcasts are only available for the past 4 weeks. Does anyone know where I can find this story, either in print or audio?

We know smoking is bad for people, but is it bad for synthesizers? While looking at classified ads for various bits of musical equipment (speakers, synths, samplers etc) I often see in the descriptions "all gear used in a 100% smoke-free environment". Does this actually matter? And how come nobody ever includes that in descriptions for secondhand electric guitars?

OK, so there are apparently 4000 different chemicals in a cigarette, right? But as I understand it, the only substance that makes it addictive is nicotine. So why don't cigarette companies simply not include all these various chemicals? Does their removal lessen the 'joy' smokers get from smoking a cigarette? What's their purpose? [more inside]
