My children's adored grandmother is a smoker. She doesn't smoke in front of the kids but does take several smoke breaks a day, and while our two year old is oblivious, our four year old is probably close to figuring out what's up. Growing up, I had no relatives who smoked, and my parents pushed the "boy, smokers sure think they look cool, don't they look stupid though?" angle which worked fine on me. Obviously that isn't going to work in this case. How do you talk with young children about smoking as a Bad Thing when relatives smoke?

Today, Costco had a decent price on boneless pork loins so I bought one. From what I can tell, this is the "whole" loin, including blade, center, and sirloin (the tube of meat is somewhere around 2 feet long).
Help me plan what to cook with part of it on Sunday, and how to process/package the rest.

Last week, on impulse, I bought a pork belly from the farmers market. After consulting Ruhlman's Charcuterie, I realized I had no curing salt (aka Prague Powder, aka sodium nitrite) at home, and no one around me sold it. Rather than toss the belly in the freezer until I could buy some by mail (again, Impulsive Pork Belly Buyer), I found a bunch of non-curing salt cure recipes, and settled on 2.5 parts kosher salt to 1 part sugar with a heap of pepper. The belly's been sitting in the fridge for the past week. It smells fine. It feels firm. I am prepared to hot smoke it tomorrow, and now I'm panicking because of a bunch of smoker/BBQ posts I've read that say I'm dooming myself and my family to botulism. Am I?

Hello Hive Mind!
A few years ago I quit smoking cigarettes And I have absolutely no desire to smoke them again.
But on the other hand, I miss the social aspects of smoking and enjoying it.
Enter Ecigs.
Mrs. NiumX and I are thinking it might be fun to get an ecig system that offers fun and interesting options with no (or low) nicotine. Flavors, whatever. Older Asks seem a few years old. What is new?
So any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Youngest Nephew (age 8) has declared that for his birthday party next week, he only wants his favorite adults to attend. We will be listening to his favorite vinyl records (he is mainly into Sinatra's Capitol years these days) and dining on omelets that he will cook for us, featuring the fancy salt and umami paste I bought his mom for Christmas. Apparently, he enjoys cooking while chomping on a bubble pipe and wearing a bathrobe that he calls his smoking jacket. This is, of course, outrageous: he must have a
real smoking jacket, and his doting aunt must be the one who presents it to him. Help me help him to be Too Marvelous for Words.

Was smoking indoors at the New York Public Library (the main branch) ever permitted? I'm specifically interested in what the rules were during the 1920s. It seems like it would have been a terrible idea to allow it, but given the prevalence of smoking during that period, I'm curious as to if it was actually banned or not. I have been googling, but haven't been able to find anything helpful.

"I've become a proud father of a little boy recently, and my wife got me a huge Cuban cigar to celebrate it with. Specifically a Partagas Lusitania. Instead of smoking it all by myself (that would be boring), I'm going to invite some of my mates over for a drink and a smoke. The problem is, I don't know what to drink with it. Any suggestions?"

What is the branded history of the
Marlboro Red cigarette? I am contemplating the history of marketing to women right now, and I am especially interested to know if the "Red" branding of today goes back to when the cigarettes had red filters to blend with lipsticks. Are they "Reds" of today called such because of the red packaging, the processing of the tobacco, the historical marketing to women, or something else entirely? It would be especially interesting to me if these cigarettes, which are hyper-masculine today, are direct descendants of a quintessentially feminine product.

Did you quit a bad or unhealthy behavior? How did you do this? My grandfather smoked for years and then one day he just stopped. I hear about some people who have been terrible drunks and one day just quit - and never had another drink. How do they do this? Is it after the last drink or before the next one? Is there a moment when you just say "I'm not doing this anymore" and that's it?
