I'm worried about my 24 year old son slipping back into a rut and it's led to me badgering him and being tough on him, for his own good I feel. However I do wonder if I'm being too hard. [more inside]
(Asking for a friend). A friend smokes weed a couple of times a year. They just smoked (for the first time in a year or two) yesterday, and are going in for a hernia surgery in three days. The hospital intake paperwork asks whether they use illegal drugs. The privacy statement specifically retains the right to share information with the police. So they'd rather not admit to the marijuana unless it's actually medically relevant. Is it possible that a couple of joints could have lasting effects four days later that a surgeon would need to know about?
My new neighbors are chain smokers who smoke right outside my bedroom windows. The weather in our neighborhood has been especially nice lately, so they're out on their patio more often to smoke multiple cigarettes over an hour. The second hand smoke is really affecting me now. I have a super important interview on Tuesday. What can I do to reduce the earache, cough, and dry eyes caused by the smoke? [more inside]
Both times I've visited Yosemite, my experience has been clouded by smokers parked at prime viewing spots and discarding cigarette butts on public trails. Can you find proposed legislation, legislators and/or lobbying groups who are actively working on banning cigarette smoking in national parks and/or restricting it to enclosed areas? [more inside]
I'm reading mid-century noir again, and keep coming up against the ubiquity of smoking. I realize I may be an outlier, but to me the smell of smoke is overwhelming and cuts so far into things like perfume, food smells, clean smells, that I have a hard time parsing the descriptions that don't acknowledge this. Is this just an issue of the fish in the water, or was there sort of an underlying understanding that everything smelled of stale smoke that was so understood that it's never mentioned?
Is there any evidence of herbs other than tobacco being smoked in Europe prior to tobacco, any evidence of the pipe existing prior to tobacco? [more inside]
You are someone who has successfully quit smoking for good after many failed attempts. What did your loved ones do that really helped you? What did people do that was really annoying and no help at all? [more inside]
A friend of mine, who is someone I might potentially want to date, rolls and smokes a spliff every day before going to bed (and occasionally up to 3 or so on special occasions). I don't know anyone else who smokes this way, and I'd like to learn more about the effects of this kind of smoking, both because I have been joining in when I am with my friend, and because I want to know what I'm getting into if I try to date this person. Specific questions inside. [more inside]
I'm planning to serve up some BBQ baby back ribs this weekend. It's a recipe I've used several times before, using a Traeger smoker/grill, and people love it! For guests who don't eat pork, I want to offer bone-in chicken breast, and was wondering if the chicken can be cooked using the same process, or will it need a different recipe? [more inside]
Back in the 1980s and 90s, my Dad used to collect cigarette coupons which got exchanged for free stuff (the arrival of the catalogue was much anticipated! ). Does anyone remember how the scheme operated (I.e how much coupons were worth) and in particular, when the scheme ended? I am particularly interested to know whether this was before the advertising of cigarettes was banned in the UK. Thanks!

I found out last night that my partner has been smoking pot about five nights a week, but in such small quantities that they did not think it worthwhile to mention, since I knew about and was not bothered by periodic smoking in general. I am not really drawn to drugs or alcohol, so I have no idea if this is an appropriate amount or not. Details within! [more inside]

I quit smoking about a month ago after 10 years of consistently smoking half a pack a day (YAY!). I have been diligent in NOT changing my diet or exercise during this process as I need to focus on one goal at a time. One of my biggest struggles with quitting is fear of weight gain, and it is happening. I would like to stave off some of that effect. I need advice from other people who have gone through quitting either smoking or other serious addiction and how they mentally coped with weight gain or physical changes and in general what can work to get back to your previous weight or accept the extra pounds. More details below the cut. [more inside]
I live in an apartment building where smoking is allowed in individual apartment units, just not in the hallways or common areas. I smoke a few cigarettes and have a glass of wine when I get home at night, and about 1/3 of the tenants in the building are also smokers who smoke in their apartments. It's just one of these low-cost, kind of dirty apartment buildings occupied mostly by college-age kids. Two days ago, a family with a newborn baby moved in above me. They left me note this morning telling me that they will not tolerate me smoking in my own apartment because they are concerned for their baby's health... [more inside]

Camel Filters and Camel Lights (now Blues) both have a foil-coated paper covering the cigarettes underneath the lid. In Filters, both the front and back halves of the foil pull out easily. But in Lights, only the front half pulls out easily. The back half is attached to the pack somehow. Why?
I think it would be AWESOME to have some chewy, honey or other naturally sweetened candy, which are not all that sweet, just to help us with oral fixations. I personally don't smoke but am needing to begin a very long progress of eating in moderation, and I tend to eat sweets when I'm bored. [more inside]
I had some work done on my car today. It's a 1994 Nissan Altima. I had a belt and pulley replaced, the engine gasket replaced, and the plugs and wires replaced. The oil was changed as well. Oil had leaked through the gasket and gotten on the engine, which they cleaned off. I drove 10 miles with no problems. [more inside]

On a lanai in southwest florida, there is some heavy daily smoking going on. Even with three walls made of screens that open to outside, the smell remains. Looking to find ways to mitigate the stale and persistent smoke smell. The amount of smoking is not going to decrease, looking for a product that will help with the smell from the actual smoking and the ashtrays full of butts (which are emptied fairly often.) After several decades of sucking up carcinogenic fumes, Mr. Thumbscrews quit smoking... yay! I'd like to present him with the smokers' equivalent of AA sobriety "chips" on his various "___ months without a cig" dates. My Google-fu is failing to produce anything. Any ideas, Hive? The ideal medallion would be cheap-ish, possibly funny, and definitely non-hokey (no soaring eagles or serenity prayers). Thanks!
I'm in Seattle for a few days, and I purchased a small amount of pot. Where can I legally smoke it? Preferably near Belltown.
I've heard that consuming products that have been smoked can increase cancer risk. I've recently started to regularly drink several cups a day of Lapsang Souchong, a smoked tea. I am an ex-smoker so I am concerned that my risk for certain cancers is already elevated. I am having difficulty finding information on if there are any potential cancer risks from drinking this tea and if so, if they are significant enough that I should consider cutting back the amount I am drinking.
Over the past 6-8 months, I've fallen into a lot of bad habits that affect how I feel in my body. I want to improve, but there is so much that needs improving that I'm not sure where or how to start, and I don't have a lot of motivation. How do I begin to turn things around? [more inside]

My brother is in his late twenties and we frequently visit our parents on the same weekend (every month or two). He always smokes weed by himself in the guest bedroom at night after our parents have gone to sleep. He's currently living with our parents temporarily, and I'm visiting now and he smoked weed last night. (I've never seen him do this, but I can always smell it.) I'm trying to decide if this could signal a problem with weed. [more inside]
I'm thinking of going down the e-cigarette route, but I've got a few questions I'm not sure about, in brief: 1) Is there any research out there on their effects on your health? I get that it's early days, and they've got to better than smoking, but are there side effects/dangers that I should be aware of? 2) Is there much difference between a cheap one I can buy at the supermarket, compared to an expensive one I buy on the internet? 3) What have your experiences been like with them? Is it difficult to make the jump from normal cigarettes? [more inside]
My sister wants/needs to stop smoking, so she's requested an e-cigarette for Christmas. But she's overwhelmed with choices and doesn't know which one she wants, other than that her doctor recommended she get one with no nicotine. And I know next to nothing about real cigarettes, let alone electronic ones, so I don't know where to begin looking. Can you suggest a good one? What even makes a "good" e-cigarette?
I quit smoking about a month ago. My boyfriend wants to quit smoking, but hasn't. He's cut down quite a bit (he hasn't been smoking in the evenings), but he still smokes during the day. I know it's not easy, I thought about quitting for a long time before it actually happened, but I just feel so upset now whenever I see him light up, or if I smell smoke on him. I feel like a hypocrite! How can I get a grip on how I react and how I feel? [more inside]
I smoked for most of my adult life. I managed to quit once before (for about 18 months) and now am on my fourth month of quitting again -- so far, so good except I seem to be getting more colds and sinus issues. I don't recall this happening last time I quit. [more inside]

My mom gave my daughter a great deal on a car previously driven by my step-dad. However he was a smoker, and he smoked in the car for 10 years. How do I deoderize the interior and remove the stale smoke oder?
My children's adored grandmother is a smoker. She doesn't smoke in front of the kids but does take several smoke breaks a day, and while our two year old is oblivious, our four year old is probably close to figuring out what's up. Growing up, I had no relatives who smoked, and my parents pushed the "boy, smokers sure think they look cool, don't they look stupid though?" angle which worked fine on me. Obviously that isn't going to work in this case. How do you talk with young children about smoking as a Bad Thing when relatives smoke?
Someone asked me this this morning, and I have no idea so I thought I would throw it out to the green. [more inside]
Today, Costco had a decent price on boneless pork loins so I bought one.
