We have the smoker, now what?

We're getting a small electric smoker for Christmas. I'd love to get some accessories to go with it, but what should we get? Are there any good smoking resources or cookbooks out there? [more inside]

Electric smoker safety questions - help save tomorrow's BBQ!

I just plugged in my Craigslisted electric smoker for the first time and it melted my (short, heavy duty, indoor/outdoor, properly rated) extension cord. Do I buy another extension cord and try again, or is this thing a fire waiting to happen? [more inside]

Electric smoker shorting out (?)

The electric smoker that I was so excited about last week doesn't work! After I plug it in, it runs for about 5 minutes before tripping the GFCI outlet that I had it plugged into. I did have it on a 10 foot long extension cord (no electrical outlets on my back porch). I assume this means there is a short somewhere? [more inside]

Where to buy Traeger grill parts?

Anyone know where I can get a hopper/burner assembly for a Traeger grill (I have the Texas Grill, but any of their line may work)? So far internet searches have been unsuccessful. I have not yet contacted the manufacturer to see if they will sell spares, but all I can find from 3rd parties are spare internals (motors, controllers, etc)...

How can I seal my smoker?

How can I seal my home-made steel smoker? It's made out of a never-used oil drum, shaped like a giant flask. The problem is that the hatch, while large enough to cover the opening, doesn't form a perfect seal because of the body's curvature. Imperfect seal = imperfect smoking. What kind of material can take the medium heat of smoking, is non-toxic (no fiberglass!), and is slightly soft, to mold itself to the surface?

Cardboard Box Smoker Advice?

This weekend I intend to construct a Custom Corrugated Vapor Colloid Applicator to smoke some fish. Now I've seen Alton Brown do this on my DVD of the show a dozen times, but I'm still a bit iffy about 1) not burning the house down 2) creating something non-food poisonalicious and 3) getting it done in time for a BBQ on Sunday. Any MeFi homemade smoker veterans have any tips for a beginner?

Help a pregnant chainsmoker quit.

Pregnant chainsmoker. I just found out that there's a baby onboard and will see my doctor next week, I'm probably only 3 weeks. As soon as I knew I put my cigarettes down, but now a few days later I really, really want to smoke. Any suggestions that don't involve nicotine patches that may help me stay off the cancer-sticks?

Tobacco Odors

I am a smoker who works at home. Now that the cold weather is here there isn't much air circulation and I stink the place up good. Have you had any success eliminating tobacco odors short of buying an expensive air purifier?
