How much meat has to be in food to be able to smell it?

I'm anosmic (born without the sense of smell) and I have weird smell-related questions pop into my head sometimes. Usually I ask whoever's around, but it's late and no one is presently available so I'm turning to you: how much meat has to be in food to be able to smell that there's meat involved? [more inside]

How to get cologne smell out of wooden furniture?

We had a house guest who loved cologne and left his bedroom smelling of it. Even with the bedding, mattress, and dresser drawers removed from the room, the smell persists, and it's strongest around the dresser, which is made of wood, as is the floor. I've tried regular wood cleaner and a vinegar-water solution on these, and have set a dish of coffee grounds on the dresser. Any other ideas?

How do I keep my shirts from smelling moldy?

I live in the UK and laundry here is just different from in the states for a number of reasons. I hang my laundry to dry, which mostly works fine except for my long-sleeved t-shirts, which always smell musty. I space them out all over the house, they feel totally dry and don't smell at all when I put them away, but a few days later when I pull one out to wear, they smell of mold. [more inside]

What's that smell?

I was in a facility that tests a large number of blood samples for a series of diseases and other markers, across multiple testing instruments. I only walked as far into the lab as you can without PPE, but I could instantly smell something... astringent, that feels like it got way up in my sinuses even a few hours later. [more inside]

How do smells pass through walls?

I know it may be a ridiculous question, but I have to ask. How do smells pass through walls? I recently transferred into a new apartment (same building, different unit), and I'm getting crazy smells coming through the walls from a neighboring unit. Common sense tells me that the walls are insulated at least enough that when a neighbor makes dinner, the smell shouldn't immediately flood into my apartment unless there are gaps somewhere. The smells aren't coming through windows or doors, and the construction in my building is... weird. [more inside]

Smells that don't exist anymore, or are harder to find in real life

Can you remember any smells from your past that are hard or impossible to come by nowadays? Possibly due to advancing technology, but doesn't need to be. I.E. now that active phone booths are a rarity, the smell of heavily weather-beaten phonebooks is a thing of the past. Or, the smell of older printing presses. Or perhaps fragrant plants that have since been banned for whatever reason. Just a few examples; I'd love to hear what smells people miss that are hard to find now. Thanks!

What's the weird smell along I-5 in Seattle?

For years I've noticed a weird smell when driving south on I-5 in Seattle, just south of the West Seattle Bridge. It's precisely the smell I've always associated with worn brake pads– since there are a number of small manufacturing businesses along that stretch, I've just assumed one of them was making something stinky. Well, now I live on Beacon Hill a few hundred yards from that spot, and we smell it ALL THE TIME. What is that smell, and could it be a health issue? Thanks!

Phantom Smells

This morning my husband and I woke up to discover that seemingly overnight our house has begun to reek of what I can only describe as a strong burning hair smell. We haven't started using our heater or anything like that yet, and nothing has changed in our daily routine. Any suggestions on what might produce such an aroma?

help me eradicate the bad unhealthy smell that I can't locate.

There's this odor. I don't know what it is or how to describe it except as dry, organic, and searing. Noisome and musty. But not organic like shit nor like mildew. Not searing like acid. Astringent but not like alcohol. A staleness, certainly, that tickles the throat and makes the eyes water. A malodorous fustiness, raw but not putrid. [more inside]
