What's that spicy smell in Park Slope?

There's something in the air around here lately - Park Slope, Brooklyn - that smells a lot like cloves or clove oil, and a bit like pipe tobacco. It came on strong yesterday afternoon and is still drifting around today. [more inside]

Oh god, the smell! The horrible horrible smell!

Oh my god. Worst smell ever, of all time, in my kitchen. Best I can describe is a combination of fermented rice, lots of fish sauce, maybe a bit of turpentine...really horrible. Basically we waited a couple of days too long to empty the garbage, something fermented and leaked in the bag, then it got all over the floor when we tried to take the bag out. How do I get the smell out? [more inside]

How long does it take a couch to stop offgassing?

How long does it take a couch to stop offgassing? I assembled a new Ikea Karlstad sofa five days ago, and while the odor has decreased a bit, it still smells. Worse, there's some VOC that irritates my nose and throat after I sit on it for half an hour or so, which is rather worrying. (My wife gets the same 'acrid feeling' too.) [more inside]

Why does my pan, heating, smell like lighter fluid?

Just started heating a newish stainless steel Alclad pan and noticed a weird smell as I was throwing onions into them (I've used it a few times before, and have never noted any strange odor). The best description I can think of for the smell is a charcoal grill, or lighter fluid. There was a whitish residue on the pan before I started cooking, which I thought was just hard water markings, but it could have been dish soap, too. Can soap smell like this when heated in a dry pan? [more inside]

I'd like to bake eggy-stink-free biscotti, but how?

Need help from experienced bakers: how do I get rid of the eggy smell that clings to otherwise delicious biscotti (and some other baked goods) after they come out of the oven? The only advice I have found is to add a teaspoon of honey to the batter. (I use your standard eggs, out of the shell) Does this work? What causes the eggy smell anyway? How do industrial biscotti-bakers avoid having the smell?

Why is my dog scared of cooked lamb?

My golden retriever-lab mix freaks out when we cook lamb -- he whines and puts his tail between his legs. He'll eat the cooked lamb fine, but he finds the smell of it cooking distressing. I've read elsewhere about this phenomenon, but does anyone have this experience with their dog or have an idea what makes lamb so scary? Does he think we're cooking his pals? He has his skittish moments (scared of thunder, natch), but this is the only time I've seen him behave this way. And he's a rescue dog, so it's possible he had some early traumatic experience involving lamb. But since I've read about other dogs behaving this way, I doubt it.

How to de-stinkify a musty bassinet

We're expecting our second child in the next couple of weeks, and I (foolishly) stored the co-sleeper/bassinet that we used with our first in the basement for the last two years. Now it smells musty. I need as benign a solution to the odor as possible. I don't want to put a newborn in a musty bassinet to sleep, but I also don't want to use harsh chemicals on something where she'll spend several hours a night (fingers crossed). What will work best? Will one of those passive odor absorbers like an air sponge, or that German metal thingie be sufficient, or do I need to use something that I actually apply to the surface fabric?
