New house smells like...bread?! And what to do about it!

So, you all have been following my travails in Seattle living for a while now. In Craigslist, I thought I found the perfect room - furnished, nice roommate (who is also the landlord), clean, in a new house, and in a good location. But, the whole house smells like sweet, yeasty wheat bread, and my asthma is not amused. [more inside]

Do all London fridges stink?

I've searched supermarkets all over West London for something that'll de-stink my fridge. Bicarbonate of soda, branded products, I just can't seem to find it any more. Do you know where I can find some bicarbonate of soda or a similar fridge de-stinking product?

burping sulfur rotten egg smell

My husband has been burping with a sulfur/rotten egg smell attached. He also complained about being very gassy. I looked on Google and every article posted was from 2004. This is only the second time in his 42 years that he has experienced this. It usually lasts for 1 week. He takes high blood pressure meds, with high cholesterol meds. He needs a fast remedy, any ideas. Right now he is taking Peppermint Gels w/ginger and fennel oils (2xday) Thanks.

Something is rotten in my state (not Denmark).

Last Wednesday I was assaulted by a foul smell in my front (guest) bathroom. I have been trying to pinpoint the cause for several days. I'm about to go out of town and need advice on what to do, especially since I'm extremely broke and have tried all the usual methods of attack. Details inside... [more inside]

Nosefilter: what might be causing this (bad) smell?

Nosefilter: what might be causing the weird (bad) smell coming from my significant other's nose? I know you're not my doctor, but this funky mucus-y smell eminates from his nose every year starting around this time and gradually fades away in the spring/summer. Has anyone else encountered this? Any recommendations for home remedies or what specialist would be best suited to provide diagnosis (ENT)? [more inside]

Shower causing bad smell

An extremely foul smell (not a shit smell -- I can't place it) has been starting up in my bathroom a short time after the shower is turned on. It doesn't seem to be the water itself that smells, but I can't tell where the smell comes from. When the shower is off, the smell eventually clears and doesn't return until the shower is turned on again. Any idea what could be going on?

Help for a musty room?

Help for a chronically musty room? Though I keep my bedroom clean, organized and vacuumed it's always got an "old closet" smell. It's not terrible, but it's definitely noticeable upon entering. Any tricks for getting rid of it? The catch: I don't want to cover things up with another scent - I just don't want it to smell at all. [more inside]

The smell of fear

I use the same deodorant/antiperspirant every day, approx. the same type of fabrics etc every day. But I find that on days I teach (college level) I come home with a distinctive sharp smell. I'm one of those teachers that has classroom anxiety. Is this the "smell of fear"? Is there such a thing? Is there a way to stop it?

Oh god, the smell! The horrible horrible smell!

Oh my god. Worst smell ever, of all time, in my kitchen. Best I can describe is a combination of fermented rice, lots of fish sauce, maybe a bit of turpentine...really horrible. Basically we waited a couple of days too long to empty the garbage, something fermented and leaked in the bag, then it got all over the floor when we tried to take the bag out. How long does it take a couch to stop offgassing?

How long does it take a couch to stop offgassing? I assembled a new Ikea Karlstad sofa five days ago, and while the odor has decreased a bit, it still smells. Worse, there's some VOC that irritates my nose and throat after I sit on it for half an hour or so, which is rather worrying. (My wife gets the same 'acrid feeling' too.) [more inside]

Why does my pan, heating, smell like lighter fluid?

Just started heating a newish stainless steel Alclad pan and noticed a weird smell as I was throwing onions into them (I've used it a few times before, and have never noted any strange odor). The best description I can think of for the smell is a charcoal grill, or lighter fluid. There was a whitish residue on the pan before I started cooking, which I thought was just hard water markings, but it could have been dish soap, too. Can soap smell like this when heated in a dry pan? [more inside]

I'd like to bake eggy-stink-free biscotti, but how?

Need help from experienced bakers: how do I get rid of the eggy smell that clings to otherwise delicious biscotti (and some other baked goods) after they come out of the oven? The only advice I have found is to add a teaspoon of honey to the batter. (I use your standard eggs, out of the shell) Does this work? What causes the eggy smell anyway? How do industrial biscotti-bakers avoid having the smell?
