I generally keep my butt clean. Babywipes and whatnot. But I applied some cream to my butt. I then washed my hands really well with soap and hot water. All over. Under the nails, even. Then, a bit later, I'm eating some grapes... [more inside]
I just opened a package of Florida Crystals Natural Sugar, and the odor is quite strong. It's difficult to describe, but it's kind of acrid/acidic. Can I Eat It? [more inside]
My newly rented apartment has a distinct odor of natural gas in the living room/kitchen adjacent to the gas fireplace, furnace, and water heater. The rental company (on site) has been notified and is getting a work order together for it, but I'd like some proof other than "Smells like it to me...". Is there a measurement I can take to show that it needs to be fixed?
I have some expensive underwear that got really smelly. Gross I know. I really want to salvage them. I desperately need your magic odour-destroying solutions! [more inside]
I found a dead rat today, and the trash had literally been picked up hours before. So now I'm going to have a (double bagged, disgusting vermin) sitting in my trash can for a week while the temperatures get well into the "make dead things smell very very dead" levels. Is there anything I can do to stop my trash cans from smelling like death for weeks?
I just got a new car! Hooray! The new car smell was exciting at first, but now it's giving me a headache. What can I do to get rid of it? [more inside]
People make my commute unpleasant. Please help me make it better. [more inside]
I went away for a moth. Now I'm back and my whole apartment smells like a melange of food that's been left in the garbage for weeks. How can I find the source of the smell and repair the situation? [more inside]
I just received some new mail-order shoes. They are for a cheap costume party gag. However, they stink so unbelievably badly of newness, chemicals and shitty-grade plastic that I literally can't unbox them. How can I un-stink them before Friday?! [more inside]
I tried some free-sample of underarm deodorant and it had a freakishly strong scent that I just can't get out of two pieces of wool clothing I wore during the trial. I've tried Eucalan soak, regular wash with a natural, gentle detergent and I can still smell the stuff. I've read that dry-cleaning wool doesn't necessarily remove odors--any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Our downstairs neighbours are using poison to combat a rat problem. Our bathroom already smells putrid from a dead rat somewhere in the vicinity of the relevant air duct. While the rats rot downstairs, can I block off the vents in my apartment to try to reduce the odour? If so, how can I do this safely, cheaply, and effectively? [more inside]
We are trying to avoid foreclosure on a house that we love, but has significant issues that we may not be able to afford to fix. Namely, moisture damage/mold. Are there risks in asking the mortgage company to help? [more inside]
How do I fix it? [more inside]
There's a particular scent I associate with the coastal SF Bay Area, in particular the Point Reyes area, though I've smelled it as far south as Big Sur. Because of that, I associate it with redwoods, but I'm pretty sure it's not just the redwoods I'm smelling. It's a little floral but also slightly sharp and astringent--oddly, as lovely as it smells, it reminds me a bit of the Clairol hair dye I used as a teenager. What is it?
My clothes cupboard is a bit overstuffed – that's not going to change. I find that anything that's not been washed in a month or so develops a cupboard smell – not mouldy thank goodness, but a smell I can only describe as "dusty". This is especially bad with T-shirts that are folded and stacked in a pile, less so (but still a bit) on shirts and trousers that hang from hangers. [more inside]
My belongings are going to be boxed and stored in a family member's extra bedroom for several months. I know how to wrap everything so that it won't chip or shatter, but should I be doing more? [more inside]

I recently bought a pair of jeans at Macy's. They stink like mothballs/formaldehyde/naphthalene. Washing them doesn't get the smell out. What IS the smell, is there a sure way to get rid of it - aside from returning them to the store as a defective product, which I'm willing to do - and why do so many jeans being sold in stores now smell like this? [more inside]
My apartment started smelling like garbage last week and I can't make it go away. What is happening?! [more inside]
At our next scout meeting I want to have my girls earn the Brownie Senses badge (omg it is the cutest!) by playing with some illusions, and I need some more ideas to round it out. [more inside]
We bought a house a month ago and moved in immediately. Since moving in we have found a couple (some significant) moisture-related issues. We have fixed most of the issues, but now all of our belongings smell of mildew/mold. What I need now is a) reassurance that everything will one day be okay and b) some guidance on practical steps to get from here to okay. [more inside]
Asking for a friend: Two times in the past six months, my oven/stove and a spot near my refrigerator (several feet away) have smelled *very strongly* of some petrochemical, like benzene or kerosene or gasoline or something sweet and fuelly like that (i.e., not natural gas, not propane). There is a similar, faint, lingering odor in the oven. What could be causing this? Some kind of propellant in the gas lines? Illicit neighbor activity? If it helps, I'm on the 4th floor of a 6-floor building in NYC.
Help me please I did a dumb and now my car reeks of the acrid stench of defeat. [more inside]
Bought a vintage purse from etsy, and now the perfume-y, musty stank monster has taken over my apartment…help? [more inside]
I've had a guest stay with Airbnb who self tanned constantly and even a week after they have left I can still smell it in the room. The problem is it is still so pervasive that I cannot even isolate where it is coming from by going around and sniffing things up close. It's a sort of vitamin C effervescent tablet/cat pee sort of thing. [more inside]
We bought some lovely new radiator covers. But they took a little longer than expected, and there was a cold snap as soon as they were delivered, so the radiators have been on and the windows have been closed...and the air stinks of hot paint. Short of leaving the windows open (and freezing) or leaving the radiator covers outside for a while, any tips for counteracting the paint smell?
My terrierist got skunked tonight, in the face/chest. Before I realized what had happened, she ran in (very distressed), and rubbed her face on part of the couch, and probably more.. She's fine now, I'm pretty sure my house is not. Everything smells so bad I can't even tell what needs cleaning. [more inside]
My three cats are urinating all over my basement and the smell is terrible. How do I deal with the smell and correct this behavior? [more inside]
Please help me identify this tree. This is what it looks like. This tree smells amazing almost every time I pass it – like some sort of amazing candy. It smells strongest in early Fall or after rain. [more inside]

In seven weeks, I'm having sinus surgery that *fingers crossed* will finally allow me to breathe! It's going to be a septoplasty (to correct a deviated septum that includes a (free bonus!) bone spur) and a submucous inferior turbanite reduction. I'm very excited and have waited a long time for this. If you've had either of these corrections before, please tell me about your experience. [more inside]
On a lanai in southwest florida, there is some heavy daily smoking going on. Even with three walls made of screens that open to outside, the smell remains. Looking to find ways to mitigate the stale and persistent smoke smell. The amount of smoking is not going to decrease, looking for a product that will help with the smell from the actual smoking and the ashtrays full of butts (which are emptied fairly often.) Is there any theory or study that would justify (or falsify) the idea I currently suffer from a lack of - for want of a better term - cootie biodiversity? Am I less healthy because my microbiome has been turned into a monoculture? [more inside]
I've bought two secondhand items in the past few years that have a strong, nauseating smell, kind of like tobacco multiplied by ten. Both are plastic-based. What is it and how can I remove it? [more inside]
We just moved into a new rental - it's early 1900s with polished hardwood floors. When we moved in there was a bit of a musty odor, but we assumed that this was just "empty house smell". The odor has largely dissipated, except for the bedroom and the adjacent hallway where the smell is getting stronger and now smells a little bit like animal pee (though it could be just general mustiness too). But we cannot locate the exact source of the smell. How do we find the location of the smell and eradicate it!? More details after the fold... [more inside]
How can I make my apartment (including my closets) smell great? [more inside]
So, something has died (or more likely been killed by one of the many neighborhood cats) under my deck and the smell is pretty awful. I know nature will take its course (probably somewhat quickly as it's summer in North Carolina and thus ludicrously hot and humid) but is there anything I can do to counteract the smell? [more inside]
I received a nice bar of soap as a holiday gift and I really like the particular cedar wood smell. So much so that I want to convert it, one way or another, into a wearable fragrance. How can I do this? [more inside]
I have this suede Australian outback hat that I bought at a garage sale a few weeks ago, for $6. I didn't examine it closely at the time, but it reeks of mold and must, leather small, and saddlesoap from a stab at self cleaning. Can I dry clean it? Here's pictures of the hat in question: My Poor Hat, two pics of it. It's a Walkabout brand Australian hat, size small. [more inside]
What are some soaps that have a strong smell that isn't so ....artificial-smelling (like whatever's in Irish Spring)? [more inside]
Everyone's hands smell like onions/garlic after chopping them, unless you use gloves. I am no exception. My hands continue to smell like onions for days afterwards, despite multiple applications of soap, water, rubbing my fingers on stainless steel, using anti-bacterial odour-reducing soap, etc. I need something more effective. There's a catch or two. [more inside]
Has it ever been discussed anywhere online what Slash's hair might smell like? I can't find anything.
Recently my jeans have started lasting only one wear before beginning to smell musty. About halfway through the day, I notice that I've been sweating enough to make the waistband slightly damp and there is a distinct odor coming from my jeans. It comes back quickly after washing, and I've never experienced this before in my life - I'm used to jeans lasting a week or so before switching them out. How do I keep from making my jeans smell, or how do I eliminate the odor permanently in washing? [more inside]
Short version: Our basement smells like there is something dead and rotting in there. We think the 'something' might be in the wall dividing out house and the neighbors (duplex) but aren't sure. We've cleaned and moved things, so now we need to call a professional in. The question is - what is the name / type of professional we need? I dont know what to look for in the yellow pages....
