On a lanai in southwest florida, there is some heavy daily smoking going on. Even with three walls made of screens that open to outside, the smell remains. Looking to find ways to mitigate the stale and persistent smoke smell. The amount of smoking is not going to decrease, looking for a product that will help with the smell from the actual smoking and the ashtrays full of butts (which are emptied fairly often.) We just moved into a new rental - it's early 1900s with polished hardwood floors. When we moved in there was a bit of a musty odor, but we assumed that this was just "empty house smell". The odor has largely dissipated, except for the bedroom and the adjacent hallway where the smell is getting stronger and now smells a little bit like animal pee (though it could be just general mustiness too). But we cannot locate the exact source of the smell. How do we find the location of the smell and eradicate it!? More details after the fold... [more inside]

So, something has died (or more likely been killed by one of the many neighborhood cats) under my deck and the smell is pretty awful. I know nature will take its course (probably somewhat quickly as it's summer in North Carolina and thus ludicrously hot and humid) but is there anything I can do to counteract the smell? I have this suede Australian outback hat that I bought at a garage sale a few weeks ago, for $6. I didn't examine it closely at the time, but it reeks of mold and must, leather small, and saddlesoap from a stab at self cleaning. Can I dry clean it?
Here's pictures of the hat in question: My Poor Hat, two pics of it.

Everyone's hands smell like onions/garlic after chopping them, unless you use gloves. I am no exception. My hands continue to smell like onions for days afterwards, despite multiple applications of soap, water, rubbing my fingers on stainless steel, using anti-bacterial odour-reducing soap, etc. I need something more effective. Recently my jeans have started lasting only one wear before beginning to smell musty. About halfway through the day, I notice that I've been sweating enough to make the waistband slightly damp and there is a distinct odor coming from my jeans. It comes back quickly after washing, and I've never experienced this before in my life - I'm used to jeans lasting a week or so before switching them out. How do I keep from making my jeans smell, or how do I eliminate the odor permanently in washing? [more inside]

Short version: Our basement smells like there is something dead and rotting in there. We think the 'something' might be in the wall dividing out house and the neighbors (duplex) but aren't sure. We've cleaned and moved things, so now we need to call a professional in. The question is - what is the name / type of professional we need? I dont know what to look for in the yellow pages....

After my baby poops in the diaper I throw it in the trash but the whole room smells of poop and the whole house to until I take out the trash once or twice a week. I need a better system, is there some special bag or trash can that can stop smells from coming thru? Or can I spray the poop with something that will stop it from smelling? Taking the diaper outside to the main trashcan multiple times a day is not a option.

So, I have a PC. It was custom built by some guy but is nothing special. Runs XP, has a hard drive, etc. Earlier today I used it for 2-3 hours and then shut it down. It emitted a serious melting plastic smell that stunk up half the house, and it froze on the shutdown screen--the mouse would not move. I freaked out and unplugged it. There was no smoke or anything visible, and there were no sounds of any sort.
I opened it up and nothing looks amiss. I started it up just now and it works fine. No smells, all the fans work fine. I'm actually using it to post this question.
Any idea what could have happened? I'm 99% sure it was the computer emitting the smell--it was definitely localized right there.

Okay, sorry for this gross question I am about to lay on you. I clean my cats' litter box on a pretty regular basis, scooping it daily (okay, almost daily) and then washing it down when needed. It is large size. What I am finding is the cat claw scrapes go down to the base and it's like the cat pee seeps down into the actual plastic of the box and just makes the box permanently stinky. I tried litter liners and it was a disaster - they ripped them to shreds and it was just extra mess to clean up. Does there exist like a stainless steel litter box base or that material they make space ships out of or something?

I feel sick every time I get on to nyc subway trains. The N train is constantly stinky like urine and mcdonalds and feet, that triggered my multiple chemical sensitivity badly.
I noticed 7 train usually have very fresh air which does not trigger my symptoms, as well as #6 train. R train is much better than N train, and E train is much better than F train.
I want to know what caused these nasty stinky trains? Are all odor caused by mold?
Btw: I can't tolerate PATH smell as well.
I'm so confused people in these trains seem do not feel anything.
Any information or comment are welcome.

Last night around 5 in the morning, we woke up because it smelled like natural gas--hard. After determining it wasn't coming from the oven, I remembered groggily to check the maintenance closet in our hallway, which contains two water heaters--one for our apartment, one for the apartment next door--and the natural gas furnace that heats our apartment through vents. I think something is happening to our furnace that causes it to do this, but I don't know what; I managed to stop it, but I'm not sure how. [more inside]

I did something colossally stupid this evening: Put up some pasta on the stove and then fell promptly asleep for a little while on the couch. Woke up to a terrible smell of natural gas. Found the water in the pot had spilled over and doused the flame of the burner it was cooking on. With the gas on high. It was probably like that for about 10 minutes or so. And now, four hours later, the house still has a strong-ish odor. Here is my question: does the smell indicate that gas is still present in the house, and if so, should I be concerned for the health and safety of my small children, who are sleeping a hallway away from the kitchen? So we have an old tiny cabin (about 8x12 ft) that is a bit in disrepair. But the real problem isn't the drafty windows or creaky door, but rather that we apparently had mink or some other musky-smelling animal nesting underneath (the cabin is raised about a foot off the ground) for quite a while, and it has pervaded the whole cabin with a musky, urine-like smell. We're really hoping not to replace all the wood, which is old, sound, and worn in the best way. What's our best bet for removing this smell permanently? [more inside]

So we're opening up a concession stand a local soccer field tomorrow, and we're going to have a grill at which we're going to serve typical grill stuff (burgers, dogs, maybe a few fancier things here and there). What can we throw on the grill (like in a saucepan on a side burner) that can blanket the fields with the smell of home-cooked burgers and generate some serious mouth-watering? The grill's fairly small -- a fairly typical four-burner suburban soccer dad fixture, and the stand will be open for about 2-2.5 hours each night. [more inside]

We just bought a new house, yay! It's in suburban NC, less than 3 years old. Starting today, my husband and I noticed a strong musty smell in the front entryway. There is a guest bathroom and a home office just beyond this foyer, but those rooms smell fine to me. The floors are hardwood, no rugs down yet. There is an air vent directly overhead as you enter the house. Could that vent (pushing out a/c for the first time since move-in, now that weather is warm) be the source of the funky smell? If yes, why?? And how do we get rid of it?
