Time to get a new smartphone, and I'll have a data contract for the first time. I'm a power user of computers, who carries 2k+ contacts and appointments around, and occasionally programs my own apps (what we oldtimers used to call "programs"). I'm really attracted to the dual screen of the

I have a
Samsung Captivate smartphone with a rate plan and data plan. If I were to cancel my AT&T contract (and pay the required fee, of course), could the phone continue to be used to access the Web via Wi-Fi to sync my Google calendar/contacts/e-mail, surf the Web, and run Web-enabled apps? I took a look at the Droid and am very tempted. Have a Blackberry Curve which is fine, but I'm due to upgrade anyway. My contract with AT&T (blech) runs out in October, cancellation fee isn't much. Droid should save me $50/month I'm currently spending to keep my Curve synced with my work Outlook.
What think you, hive mind? I know there are a lot of MeFi Droid owners. I trust you
way more than Amazon reviewers.
