Smart women

I'm interested in being inspired by smart women. What are your recommendations for blogs or autobiographies of strong-willed, independent and successful women? For most of my life (with the exception of my mother) I have looked up to the accomplishments of men. The vast majority of blogs that I have followed in the past have also been male-dominated.

As a result, a part of me has been long convinced of the idea that men are smarter than women. And my reasoning behind this is due to my belief that because women are so strongly influenced by their emotions and the need to find a long term mate that they devote the majority of their energy to attracting that mate (for ex: picking up the fashion magazine instead of the newspaper)

I know that this isn't correct for all women--I have encountered many strong and smart women but this bias still remains. As a young woman myself, I'd like to look for successful & note-worthy women to not only help change my perspective, but to also act as my role models.

I'm open to any suggestions, but I would prefer blogs or books by women who are either in their 20s or 30s (and are still alive) that address current events, politics, business, or art.

Thanks!

What are your top 5 (Google) Android Apps?

What are your top 5 Android Apps? So, I decided to buck the trend a buy an Android device (HTC Magic).

With Metafilter being v. iPhone-centric I thought I'd bring something different to the table.

My answer (so far):

1. last.fm (to be replaced by Spotify when it's launched)
2. Astrid (gtd software)
3. TasKiller (task manager)
4. ShopSavvy (barcode product search)
5. Google Maps

Please help me make school more bearable

How do I learn intimidating material without making myself miserable? I am in a mathematical/logical course this summer. Perfecting the material requires extended practice more than anything else - knowing how to solve a problem correctly is more of a "skill knowledge" thing than a "fact knowledge" thing. Because it is 13 weeks of material (in the regular year) being squeezed into 6 (half a summer credit), the course moves veeeery quickly, so there isn't really very much time for all that practice you need. When I study for this course, the following sequence occurs, pretty much always:

1) Do some problems.
2) Inevitably, make some mistakes (because otherwise you wouldn't need to learn, right?)
3a) Become despondent and insecure, cry: I'm stupid, I'll never pass the course, etc.
And/or:
3b) Become frustrated and angry, scribble out the whole page, crumple up my paper, hit the table, etc.

I am acutely aware that this behavior is self-defeating and ridiculous. Studying becomes so emotionally intense that it makes me strongly disinclined to study, and less effective when I do manage to make myself study. (Nonetheless, I work on this class for 4-8 hours every day.) And I do not know how to turn it off: By the time I've made my second or third mistake, the tears are welling up, by my third or fourth, I'm crying. On bad days, it takes less than that.

It's worth noting that I've always harbored extreme intellectual insecurities (I can remember feeling this way as far back as kindergarten), and I've always resorted to coasting/not trying when they threatened me: If you don't try, you can't really fail. The alternative is to face your own limitations, which is scary. Because I've been able to successfully progress through my entire education up until now, in my last year of undergrad, while coasting, I haven't had a very strong incentive to work on this problem. This is the first time I've ever really tackled it, which itself constitutes progress. But it's really, really hard. It's horrible and draining. I hate it. And I've been at it for a while, and it's not getting any better.

I think I've always held a strong but implicit belief that smart people do not have to try - they understand things immediately, and they don't make mistakes. I've seen the literature (e.g. Carol Dweck's work) that makes clear what a destructive attitude this is toward learning.

I'm asking for two kinds of coping strategies here:

1) Short-term ones that will allow me to get through the last week or so of the course while enduring a minimum of misery. (Do such things exist? Is there any way I can reduce the intensity of this problem in the short term by even, say, 10%?)
2) Long-term ones that will allow me to tackle this problem the next time I encounter it (and, given what an enduring issue this is for me, and that I want to continue in academia, I will encounter it again.)

More specifically, I'm looking for concrete practices I can implement when my emotions begin to overwhelm me, ways I can intervene in this emotional progression that feels very much outside the control of my conscious, rational mind (which knows I'm being ridiculous.) Just telling myself (or hearing other people tell me) that I'm being absurd is not enough.

Before anyone brings it up: I'm in CBT. I have long-standing and documented, diagnosed issues with depression and anxiety. Picking up meditation is on my "to-do" list, but it's not something I have time for right now, in the midst of this crazy, fast-paced course.

Wifi, Get Cell Phone Free?

To cut down on connectivity bills should I pair a Novatel Mini-port with some sort of unlocked wifi-enable smart-phone/device, such as an Ipod Touch or a wifi Skype phone? I'm about to move. In the process, have been thinking about consolidating services. I currently pay - monthly - $55 to ATT for non-smartphone cell service and $30+ a month to Comcast for half a broadband connection.

What I want: one bill for a single wifi link to a non-contract phone (preferably smartphone) and my laptop.

What would you recommend?

Here's what I'm thinking:

A Novatel Mifi port for $60 per month + either an Ipod Touch/some other smartphone or a netgear wifi skype phone. I'd simply bring the Mifi port with me to keep me plugged in.

With the Touch option I'd have no access to skype, but I think I could get by using email to SMS messaging, provided there's no fee. With the Netgear, no access to email.

I guess my question boils down to: What's the best portable device to pair with a Novatel Mifi port?

P.S. If anyone's tried this and has feedback that would be great too!

Cheap smartphone that will make Skype calls over Wi-Fi?

Can anyone recommend a cheap smartphone that can make Skype calls over Wi-Fi? I don't want to use the smartphone on the cell phone network (though I might if I can get a cheap one that will work with AT&T). I just want one that will be able to make and receive Skype calls over my home and office wifi networks. I would prefer that the phone actually run Skype's official software, and not some alternative. Basically, I want a cheaper alternative to one of those Belkin or Netgear wifi phones.

The Skype calls must be able to use the phone's built in microphone and speaker - like a normal phone call. I mention this because some of these phones will run Skype but only with a headset or only over the speakerphone or some nonsense.

I will try and find any recommended phones on Craigslist in Los Angeles, if that matters.

Disk Utility error: false alarm, or bad omen?

In OS X on my iMac, Disk Utility asserts that my main, internal hard drive is "about to fail" and has been asserting this for several months. But my computer is running just fine... should I worry? The S.M.A.R.T status is failed, and the various helpful sounding options, like First Aid or Verify, are all unclickably greyed out. Using Boot Camp and HD Tune under windows, I can see the "bad" attribute is:

ID (01) Raw Read Error Rate
Current: 11
Worst: 1
Threshold: 51
Data: 59669
Status: Failed

A different utility just names the fields slightly differently...

1, Raw Read Error Rate
Raw value: 59699
Status: FAIL
Value: 11
Worst: 1
Threshold: 51

All the ther attributes (things like "seek error rate" and "spin up time" and stuff) are normal.

But my computer is running just fine. I can't work out if this is just some freaky one-time error that happened to the hard drive once which it won't forget about, reflects an existing (if seemingly benign) state of affairs, or is a sign of impending doom. This error has been present for several months now, perhaps even from The Beginning - the iMac is only 6 - 8 months old. The Man From Apple suggested I format my entire drive but that sounds pretty tedious if I don't really need to do anything / insufficient if my hard drive is actually about to die from mechanical failure.

Obviously I'd love for you all to tell me how I can safely ignore this, and even how I might be able to disabuse Disk Utility of the notion that things are messed up. On the other hand, if you think there might be trouble ahead, then do snap me out of my complacency and I'll promise not to shoot the messenger.

BRAIN WANTS BIGGER

I need a solid list of fun video games [esp. Xbox 360 and Wii] that will make (feel) smarter. For example: the game "Portal" absolutely stumped me at times and required me to literally contemplate -- but it was also fun. Half Life 2 had moments like that as well. I know games like Big Brain Academy and Brain Age should be viable answers to my question, but I think of them as kind of dubious as far as "smart" games go. Sure, they make you think, but in very inane, un-fun ways that are more helpful for warding off neurological laziness (with things like memorization and simple math) than it is in actually making you debate a solution with yourself.

If I have been too vague, I will gladly clarify in the comments.

I want to be smart so I can write clever Askme Headlines

What are some easy, relatively quick ways to learn to write better, think clearer, and express myself better? There are a thousand reasons that I'd like to learn more about everything, not that anyone should need a reason to want that. Basically, when I'm writing on Mefi or on my blog, I keep finding myself grasping for words to express myself and coming up short. I know my grammer stinks as well. I want books, movies, and other means and mediums by which I can raise my intelligence quota a little. I'm interested in not just learning to write better, but learning to think clearer, argue my beliefs and values better, and feel more enlightened all-around. Extra points for pointing the way to free and/or 'fun' (ie: Nintendo DS games) paths to enlightenment.

how to be smart

how do I become smarter in making the best decision when facing a new situation for the first time? Hi

I would like some suggestions as to how I could become a smart person who can be decisive, and make good and snap (under time constraint) decisions when facing a new situation for the first time.

I have thought of the phase 'learning by mistakes' but this won't help me as there are always new problems and situations which I have never encountered before.

I am the type of person who when faced with a new difficult situation, would freeze and become useless and made stupid decisions. I would like to know how I could change myself from that.

This is my background:
I'm a 26 year old male. I have gone through university and graduated with a bachelors degree. My grades weren't great and I have failed a few papers. I am now working full time as an administrator (in the custody department) for a stockbroking firm (work experience approximately 3 years)

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

Thanks
Romantic yes, but also ironic.

Please suggest self-aware romantic comedies. (Rather lengthy explanation sheepishly included.) Here is a list of things I like in a movie, with examples. The basic genre is "smart romantic comedy", but there is a specific list of attributes I'm focussed on.

1. Can you suggest more movies that fit into this genre?
2. Can you succinctly name this genre?

PLOT
The major conflict is realistic & interpersonal (no chainsaws, no sharks, no murders).
The stakes are not "life v. death", they are more like "fulflling, challenging love v. boredom & loneliness" (eg, Annie Hall)
The plot is logical and simple, although it can be quirky.
The plot is possible- it could happen to almost anyone in the audience.

TONE
The tone is irreverent, ironic, and modern (although I'm very interested in classic movies that fit this genre, too).
The music is important and carefully chosen, and maybe even performed live by a character at some point (the final duet in Juno).
The locations are romanticized (Paris in Amelie, the record shop in High Fidelity, the quarry in Garden State)
I like quirky, but we don't need to go overboard (Garden State goes overboard: Juno is pushing it in a few scenes).

CHARACTERS
The characters are charming, detailed, funny, self-aware, and ironic.
Females are smart, funny, and genuinely equal matches for males. Men are not slacker cads who resent growing up, and women are not shallow bridezillas (eg, not like Knocked Up).
Not everyone is the same race, sexual orientation, social class, etc., and yet these differences are not a big deal and don't drive the plot.
There is a sense of friendly competition and fraternity between the characters, especially the lead couple (Pam & Jim in The Office).
The characters enliven their days by playing games with themselves, or indulge in small, private ceremonies (Amelie skips stones; Cusack makes lists in High Fidelity).
The characters have a high reference level- they are up to date without seeming too trendy or topical (Woody Allen knows his McLuhan in Annie Hall, Tina Fey in 30-Rock).
There are comedic "bits", plum roles, and/or killer scenes that may be somewhat tangential to the main action but add a lot to the tone. (Jack Black in High Fidelity, the orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally.)
The romance is quirky- people give each other Pepto Bismol and comic books, not roses and chocolate.
The characters tend to be a little dry, cynical, or self-conscious, but there are parts where we see their genuine sweetness and love.

SWEET ENDING
At the climax, the audience reaches a soft, open, innocent emotional state where they smile a lot and cry a little at the same time. A big, swelling, satisfying feeling (Amelie when the music swells as they ride the scooter through Paris, Wall-E when he & Eve hold hands).

AWARENESS OF VIEWER
** I'm interested in movies that only fit the above criteria- but, major bonus points if you can suggest films with the following trait as well:

The main characters are occasionally aware of the viewer and look or speak directly to camera at times.
(as occurs in The Office, Annie Hall, High Fidelity, Amelie.)

That's about it, I guess.
So, how to pithily describe this genre?
What movies should I rent in order to research it?
I also welcome general comments about the genre if you think my list of its traits is flawed or incomplete,
and resources for learning more about how best to write this specific type of movie.

Thanks for your help!

How can I transfer my calendar from a Motorola Q to an iPhone?

How can I transfer the calendar from a Motorola Q to an iPhone, without Outlook 2003? I have a new iPhone, and I want to transfer my calendar info from my old Motorola Q to the iPhone. I have Outlook 2000, which unfortunately won't sync with the iPhone. Not really a big deal to me, except I want to transfer my calendar info from my old phone.

The service on the Motorola Q has been canceled so I cant access the web with it. I can still connect it to my pc and sync it, upload or download programs and files, etc.

Alternately, is there any way to legitimately get Outlook 2003 really cheap?

What exactly is displayed on Curves (for Women) Smart equipment?

This is in regard to Curves Smart equipment, which is now available at some Curves for Women fitness facilities. Does anyone know what exactly the display depicts? Although I've seen pictures of it, which shows "Cardio", "Energy", "Range", and "Reps", I'd like to know what each one is indicating. Also, prior to the installation of the Smart upgrade, the hydraulic resistance was non-adjustable. The only way to get more resistance was to speed up. It appears that the hydraulics are still configured the same. If so, then is it safe to assume that the only way to increase intensity/resistance is to do more reps in the same 30-second time frame? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Smart & Pregnant

A question about kid lore ("smart" = "pregnant").
When I was a kid in Arizona, the following schoolyard "joke" was common:

Kid A: Are you smart?
Kid B: I guess. Sure.
Kid A: HAHA THAT MEANS YOU'RE PREGNANT HA SMART MEANS PREGNANT YOU'RE PREGNANT!

I did not understand it then. I do not understand it now.

My friend Joshua remembers it from his kidhood in Fresno, but in Fresno the added element was that Kid A would claim that smart meant pregnant in French.

I made some calls. My sister remembers kids using this same saying. She also remembers them using PG in place of pregnant— -- that may be a clue. My brother-in-law had never heard or this, nor had my 18-year-old niece. Nor my ma, for that matter.

Anyone know what this means (if anything)?

Crackberry Blues

I am a brand new Blackberry Curve owner with a very frustrating problem. I don't have MS Outlook (or MS Office) so I can't sync my address book. I would really like to be able to edit and back up my address book on my PC but I have found NOTHING to help me with this quest. I am not able to spend a ton of money for software I will only use for this purpose (the phone cost enough, TYVM), so it should be "cheap-as-free" whatever it is. FWIW, I have Vista installed on my PC, and use Firefox and Google for most things.
Also, if anyone has any other information, recommendations, cool sites or downloads they recommend for novice Crackberry addicts like myself please feel free to post them!

Will a smartphone make me more or less organized?

Procrastinators: Is your PDA/smartphone a net negative or a net positive from a productivity standpoint? I'm trying to decide whether to get a Palm Centro or a standard flip phone. Both will fulfill my basic needs (standard cell phone stuff, plus being able to access the Internet to check LA traffic maps.)

I think the Centro could help me stay more organized--I have trouble remembering to carry my Hipster PDA or other organizer devices, but a cell phone will always be around. I could make lists and appointments on the spot, set timers, take down notes, and generally help combat my distractable and absent-minded nature.

On the other hand, I know that a vast variety of software is available for the Palm OS. Between fiddling with the settings and surfing the Web with the built-in browser, I'm concerned any time I save through being organized will just get frittered away again. The flip phone, with just enough Web capability to save me in a pinch and a presumably less-flexible OS, shouldn't present such a problem.

So, those of you who have a PDA/smartphone: has it led you down the green paths of higher productivity, or into the Pointless Forest of shiny distractions?

How can I accurately determine which drive is actually failing?

One of my hard drives threw a SMART error last night, but the symptoms are inconsistent with the self-diagnosis. What is the best way to do further testing? Background: My computer has worked fine for years. I have not installed any hardware in just as long, and the last program I installed a few weeks ago has worked fine ever since.

Specs:
AMD Athlon 3000+
3 GB RAM
2 HDDs of different sizes (one Seagate, one Maxtor)
GeForce 6600 video card (something like that)

Symptoms: I was playing Oblivion last night and after about half an hour I started experiencing very erratic pauses. It wasn't the regular bouts of slowdown I experience as the result of running this game on an underpowered PC, where the sound keeps playing and the video freezes temporarily-- in this case, both sound and picture freeze for 3 seconds, then continue. This problem extends into Windows as well. I restart the computer and it works fine for another half hour, then problem repeats. Eventually the game freezes altogether so I do a hard reset.

Prognosis: Here's where things get weird. As mentioned above, I have 2 drives. Oblivion is installed on the master drive. When the computer restarts, BIOS informs me that the secondary slave drive is failing. I shut the computer off immediately and have not powered on since. Perhaps it doesn't matter, but it seems odd to me that a drive that shouldn't even be actively used is causing all these hangups. The drive is not heavily used otherwise, and I believe it is even the newer of the two.

Both drives are on the same IDE cable; one is set to master, one is set to slave (as should be). Yet the slave drive supposedly threw the error. I have not changed the jumpers since installing the drives.

Stranger still is the fact that I've been running HDD Health and all this time that second drive has had a TEC well into the future (albeit with a 50% accuracy rate).

Inquiry: I've been burned before by ignoring SMART warnings, so I'm not taking any chances this time. I intend to back up the most important data from both drives to an external drive and relegate the problematic drive to one of my non-critical lab machines.

But the question remains...

How can I accurately determine which of the drives is actually failing? I don't entirely trust SMART's diagnosis. Are there any utilities I can run to do more in-depth testing than HDD Health?

True Crime message boards make me want to commit a violence!

Are there any "smart" true crime community blogs or message boards? A couple of times I've become interested in some crime-related news (one was the BTK case, and another is now, the disappearance of a young mother), and gone looking for a (generally) Mefi-style place where people are discussing and updating... and what I've found has been awful.

What I don't like:

The repetition: The exact same (usually obvious and simplistic) comments and observations are posted again and again, ad nauseam... and gods help you if a bit of misinformation gets introduced - 70 pages and 3,000 comments later people are still discussing that bit of false information as though it has some bearing on the case. And the people who dash into a thread with thousands of comments and are all, like, "So, what happened? Sorry, I couldn't read all these comments."

The psychics: "I have a very strong feeling that VictimNameHere will be found by water" ; "I think it was the husband, JMHO"; "She wouldn't have ever done X in a million years"... blah, blah.

The stupidity: Oh... man. Too much here to cover.

The smilies, avatars, and sigs: Gag.

The gooey: "My heart just breaks for that poor family." Yes, absolutely... but 800 comments like that makes me want to kill you all.

The Expert Victims: I have never seen one of these boards in which there weren't a least a couple of people going on about their experiences being stalked, attacked, etc., with lots and lots more comments saying, "oh, how awful for you!" Most boards even have their resident Star Victims, and almost nothing they talk about has any bearing on the case at hand, except in the most superficial way, ie: "She must have been so afraid... I remember when I was attacked, I was very afraid." Sure, sometimes real life experience can bring something to the table, but I haven't seen this happening.
________________________________

So. Isn't there someplace where the discussion is a little more rigorous and disciplined?

'Smart casual' trousers, what alternatives are there for men? I'm in search of some 'smart casual' (I hate that phrase, but can't think of a better one) trousers for work wear other than khakis/chinos etc... would prefer something a bit more fashionable, that can also be worn in a hot climate.
How do I search firefox Smart Search from the command line in OS X?

I absolutely love Firefox Smart Keyword Searches. Beyond just the default preinstalled ones, I also use custom ones for easynews, rottentomatoes, metafilter, etc. Here's my question: Is it possible to launch these from the command line in OS X? For example, ideally I would enter (into a bash prompt) rt apple to open a new tab in firefox with a search result for "Apple" in rotten tomatoes, like this.. Similarly, I would like to be able to enter easy creative commons to have it launch the keyword bookmark "easy" which searches easynews global for "creative commons". Is this possible to do, preferably without using Applescript or Automator?

Help a college student decorate a living room/kitchen on the cheap. Theme: Martini glasses and tiki. I need to cheaply decorate my living room and kitchen. I want to create a really festive atmosphere that will be good for cocktail parties. The theme is martini glasses and vintage tiki-esque hawaiian. Some things I've done so far:

bought three martini glasses from the dollar store. filled each with assorted glass baubles. Stuck paper umbrella in each. Arranged in cluster for a nice centerpiece.

Coconut scented candles all over

i'm going to purchase a set of three kitchen towels with cocktail recipes on them from the martha stewart line at k-mart.

What are some cheap things I can buy and make? I need table centerpieces, wall art, curtains, lights, & pieces to fill in the open spots in the wall unit. I'm good at making things once I get the idea, but rather bad at coming up with good ideas.

Thanks soooo much!!

Need help with PCI to IDE controller card

Having problem with S.M.A.R.T data collection apps with IDE drives on a PCI to IDE card. I have one of these PCI to IDE controller cards either from Sabrent or Syba. Both of these companies seem to sell almost identical cards based on Silicon Image chip.

http://www.sabrent.com/products/specs/SBT-RDIT.htm

This supports RAID. But I have not set it up to use RAID. I have an Abit AN7 mobo with an AMD Sempron CPU. This card is supposed to allow attaching up to 4 IDE drives.

On the primary channel I have two drives hooked up in Cable Select mode and using removable drive cages. On the secondary channel I have only one drive in Cable Select mode and using a similar removable cage.

Whenever I try to use one of those Hard disk monitoring apps that collect S.M.A.R.T data I get a hang when the apps gets to these drives and in the event viewer I see a timeout event. I dont have the exact message here with me. Then after a while I need to basically reboot the machine because everything starts to hang soon after this.

I have narrowed the problem down to connecting two drives to the primary channel. I did not try adding two drives to the secondary channel since I need to open the case and juggle things to do that. But as soon as I remove any one of the drives on the primary channel the SMART apps work fine. Do not know if the removable drive cages have anything do with it, or whether the card is bad, or I need to enable some settings somewhere.

I dont think the drives are the problem because I have tried a few different disk drives that I have lying around.

I was wonderinf if somebody has any idea about what may be the problem.

SMART-capable firewire enclosure?

Are there any Firewire or USB external hard drive enclosures that support translation of SMART messages? I would like to use smartctl (on OS X) to monitor SMART error logs on an enternal hard drive, but haven't been able to find any enclosures that pass SMART messages over the bridge chip..
