How local is the slur, "zombie" = homeless person/addict

I moved to a new area (just outside the Bay Area, California) and encountered a new er unflattering euphemism for homeless people or addicts — zombie. I'd never heard this before. I'm wondering if it's local flavor. Have you heard this, other places? [more inside]

How can I combat Islamaphobic accusations about use of public space?

Neighbours of family have been alleging bizarre behaviour from "Muslims" and I'm trying to figure out if this is observer bias, cross-cultural misunderstanding, or what? The specific allegations are public defecation in a park (a long narrow park, where the anyone can be seen from the road and the houses on the other side of the road), and use of other people's private property (specifically lawn furniture/patio furniture). The second one I think may be a misunderstanding, but the first one baffles me. More context: [more inside]

Can/should I avoid visiting my hometown indefinitely?

About five years ago, shortly after my 21st birthday, I was drugged and sexually assaulted by a prominent, beloved person from the rural community where I grew up. My parents still live in the same town, and desperately want me to visit. Potentially running into my rapist is... not a can of worms I want to open. Neither is explaining the situation to my parents. How should I handle this? (trigger warning -description of sexual assault under the cut) [more inside]

Real Life Royston Vasey?

Are there any real-life historical examples of the Small Town With A Terrible Secret horror trope? Towns where long-term, ongoing crimes (or unsavory religious practices one supposes) where purposefully covered up and kept hidden from the outside world and any attempt to investigate them resulted in the investigator being detained, thrown out, or killed?

Looking for a small town.

Need suggestions please. The time for our retirement is just around the corner. We raised our family in a small town that is a close cousin to Mayberry. One sheriff, no stop lights and all the crazy nick names for the locals. Looking for a little cooler area to retire to, but still want that small town atmosphere where if it dosn't get done today, well, there is always tomorrow. Also, is there anything you miss after leaving a small town?
