How do I file in small claims court against someone from another state? I am in MN, she is in WA. The MN state site for Small Claims says that the claim should be filed in the county of the defendant. Do I have to file in Seattle, or can I file in Minneapolis? We didn't sign a contract, but I have chat logs and emails of her saying she'd do work for me, then saying she'd refund my money after not doing that work. The whole experience has taken place over 7 months. [more inside]

Ok, well, it turns out Dollar Rent A Car wants to take me to court for the $1000. (see: this question) I plan to file in small claims court before they can take me to court because I think that will give me a better chance of winning. However, I only want to discuss who is responsible for the $1000 and not whether or not I was insured at the time. Help! [more inside]

My car was just totaled by an unlicensed, uninsured 16-year-old driver in Chicago. I'm insured, but I have no collision coverage, so any/all expenses are strictly out-of-pocket. The teen responsible was found to be 100% liable on the police report. Can/should I take the family to small claims court? Related: Can anyone suggest a salvage guy that pays a fair price for junked cars and a decent lawyer to represent me in small claims court? Do I even need a lawyer in small claims court? Sorry - I'm new to this. [more inside]

Another security deposit question with a twist. Landlord in California is holding deposit until she receives "payment" for unreturned DVDs - which I didn't borrow. Illegal. However, I didn't return the keys before I left on vacation to Thailand! [more inside]

I flew with JetBlue last month. Some small items were missing from my luggage when I arrived at my destination. I am trying to figure out how far I want to go with this to try to 1) get reimbursed for lost/stolen items and 2) get them to make their legal documents reflect their actual policies. I'd like some advice from people who have dealt with airlines and their luggage policies to help me strategize. [more inside]

Okay - Small claims question here - maybe the MeFi legal eagles can help me out... Business A is sued by Business B is small claims court in the state of Idaho. Plaintiff, (Business B) doesn't bother to show up to the trial. Plaintiff's case is marked "dismissed with prejudice" on judgement. Business B has subsequently refiled the same case with the same court. Not appealed, but simply filed again. The court clerks are unable to clarify whether this is an oversight on their part (allowing business B to file the case again) or if it's even legal to do so. They can however, verify that this is not filed as an appeal of the original case. Clerk intends to confer with original Judge next week. Thoughts?

IANAL Dentist filter: So the dentist told my wife, repeatedly, "of course your insurance will cover this. Don't even worry about it." The insurance won't pay for it. We're stuck with the $400 bill. If we don't pay, our credit is hosed. Non-snarky suggestions?

I have been subletting an apartment in Wisconsin for the past few months, and I just found out that my sublessee hasn't paid any rent. He was evicted a month ago. Is it possible for me to recover the rent (for which I am ultimately responsible, according to the lease terms) from him in small claims court? [more inside]
