I have some sort of malware on my Dell that constantly redirects me away from where I desire to go. Specifically, it seems to prevent Gmail from working. Also prevents any major search site from loading. Always redirects to some idiotic ad site. [more inside]

I just got DSL broadband and, while it is the slowest of AT&T's 3 levels of speed, it still is only a bit faster than the old dialup. A test using a borrowed laptop on the same phone line was much faster, so something is slowing things down in my PC, but what? Processor is old and slow, at 400Mhz, 375mb ram, 4 gigs hd free space, Win ME, running MSIE and Opera browsers. My desktop has about 100+ items on it. Could this be my problem?

As of two weeks ago, my (entirely legal) Soulseek downloads won't go any faster than exactly 4.1 k/s. If I download more than one file at a time, they'll each go at 2 k/s; four at a time go at 1 k/s each; any more than that and they all fail. My internet is otherwise speedy and the relevant ports are forwarded. Why is this happening to me? What have I done wrong?

My six month old Dell laptop (WIN XP) has started taking forever shutting down. It seems sometimes like five minutes or more. I recently switched from wireless broadband to Telco ISPs which I suspect may have something to do with the problem. I've done Ad-aware, found some stuff I removed but it doesn't solve the problem. Can anyone suggest what the pblm might be and how I can fix it without spending a lot of precious cash?

Mac gurus: the last couple of days my 867 TiPowerbook has been behaving erratically. Slow WiFi: I have a Linksys WRTP54G Wireless Router plugged into a cable modem. When I connect my laptop to it via an ethernet cable I get downloads of 6mbps, but when I flip to the WiFi connection that drops to ~4mbps. I've overfilled my laptop and want to move files to external drives. But moving keeps getting stopped for various reasons (and what the hell is a cyclic redundancy??) and I'm going nuts. Please send me your speed tips and procedure suggestions! The specifics: Toshiba satellite running windows xp; total c drive size 55.8gb, free space 12.6. External drives: f (in fat 32 which I'd like to reformat to ntfs) has a capacity of 152gb, and has only 66.1 free. Newest drive g (i've just formatted it to ntfs) has a capacity of 111gb, with 103 left after my abortive attempts to put an image disc of c on it. Thanks ... [more inside]

I have been noticing a problem with my work laptop which is running XP SP2. If left up and running all night, then on most mornings i find out it is running very sluggishly with 100% CPU utilization (from the graph). First I thought may be it is firefox with its large number of open tabs. But I am not so sure anymore. killing firefox does not help. Also when I look at the CPU column in task manager i cant quite figure out what is causing that 100% utilization. None of high numbers on the CPU column look suspect. Obviously I am missing something here. One thing I am not 100% sure, and there may be something to it, is that I may have seen this problem more often when I am using wifi instead of wired LAN at home. But I need to verify this. After this happens I usually have to reboot the machine after bringing it back to work. I am able to suspend the machine and bring it to work and plug it into the work LAN. But unless I reboot it it really runs slow. Just logging out does not help. [more inside]

Not-Lame Country Music: I understand that some Alice in Chains, Nirvana, etc. , songs have a strong "country" flavor, deep guitars, slow vocals, tons of mood, while still rocking. I know nothing about country music, and most of what I've heard doesn't do it for me. What dark, slow and moody Country music would you recommend?

How can I troubleshoot my Mac's ADSL connection? A few weeks ago my download speed suddenly dropped to about 4kilobits/sec after I tried to set up a firewall. I then turned off the firewall, but the speed hasn't returned. I'm running Mac OSX 10.3.4 on an eMac with 1GHz processor and 1GB RAM (confirmed intact by profiler) on a simple ADSL router (YahooBB, the leader in Japan) with an ethernet hub. Interestingly, upload is fine at 500 kbps, and my older slot-loading iMac 350MHz is zooming along fine on the same connection at 1150kbps download speed. TCP/IP settings are simple, DHCP auto-assigns the IP.

My computer (HP Pavilion PIII running XP) has been straining lately. It's slow to load programs, occasionally hangs for a second on simple tasks and throws out some odd flashing on bootup that wasn't there before.

If I was going to address this, how would I go about it step-by-step? Preferably without simply reformatting and reinstalling because I don't want to sort out my backups unless I absolutely have to.

My XP Pro system slows down a lot when accesing large amounts of data on a CD (say copying a whole CD to a HD). This doesn't seem logical. Is there some cache-, buffer- or something- setting I can tweak?

I saw a thread about DOS games, but I'm wondering - I can play DOS games on my system, but my modern computer's speed makes most games move too fast to be that enjoyable (I'm thinking of the original Oregon Trail, in particular). Is there any way to slow them down, or is this a lost cause?
