Brand me

What is that I'm doing? Tag my business. I’ve been working freelance for a couple of years while I finished my degree doing a variety of tasks for academics (4 or 5) who work in the field of Education. Some of the things I’ve done have been to create logos for various groups, diagrams and illustrations for lesson plans and books, some photography, animations, presentations, formatting of material for publishing, transcription, managing an international journal and formatting it, creating databases and entering all the data, as well as analysing it (lightly – I’m no expert in statistics) and producing all graphs and reports.

Now that I’ve finished my degree, I want to increase my clientele. I think I can make a go of this because I turned over around $30K at about 14 hours a week. I have a domain which is my own name and the word design. I hope to launch my website (with a blog -thanks metafilter for earlier advice) in January. I’m working on a design for my business card. My current clients will probably forward my details onto their mailing groups if I ask them – I just need one last thing. What do I do and what’s a good tag line? I would have thought “academic support” except that that phrase tends to mean helping students to survive university. I tested the tagline “the whole package” on one of my current clients, and she was aghast, but couldn’t exactly say why.

So, to summarise my business card, for example...

b33jdesign
<s>Academic Support </s>(?)
<s>The whole package </s>(?)
w: www.b33jdesign.com
e: jr@b33jdesign.com
p: xxx xxxx xxx

Help me brainstorm clever astrophysics bumper stickers! I've seen stickers along the lines of "Save Pluto" and "I brake for black holes." But I'm trying to come up with clever, pithy ideas for bumper stickers, where by reading them you would immediately know the driver was an astrophysics fan.

To be specific, this is a bumper sticker for not just a space fan, or a science fan, but for a fan of astrophysics.

I've looked online and I haven't seen anything of the sort. This isn't for commercial reasons, but for a story I'm working on. The shorter and funnier the slogan, the better.

Thanks!

If a pig was running for office, what would his/her slogan be? I am having some art made for some colleagues' and my offices. Since we work in politics and animal agriculture, I thought it would awesome to have campaign posters of the 7 major species running for office. They can either be running individually or as a pair - such as a chicken and turkey running on the same ticket. Now I am looking for campaign slogans.

Here is the list of major species.

Dog
Cat
Cow
Horse
Pig (Bringing home the bacon?)
Turkey
Chicken (A me in every pot?)

Preferences:

While these may be in a professional environment, I am not averse to making a couple extra for my house, so no limits on common decency.

Bonus Question: Every other animal is considered (by the FDA) to be a minor species. What would be the funniest animal to be "the voice for the minority"? A llama? A gold fish?

Thanks in advance, and have fun!

Je me souviens... quoi?

Is there more to the Quebec slogan "Je Me Souviens" than "I Remember"? I lived in Quebec for five years, leaving before the infamous 1995 Referendum. The slogan printed on all of the license plates, of course, is Je Me Souviens. Exactly what is being remembered is up to question, though it's usually taken to mean that Quebeckers remember their own history and heritage in some sense.

Anyway, around this time journalist Nick Auf Der Mar (this woman's father, in case you're wondering) wrote a newspaper column discussing the lead-up to the referendum, and I distinctly recall him claiming that "Je Me Souviens" was a fragment of a longer quote from a French-Quebecker who was loyal to England: "Je me souviens que, né sous le lys, j'ai fleuri sous la rose" ("I remember that, although born under the fleur de lys, I blossomed under the rose" - the lys being the symbol of France, and the rose being England.)

I've always meant to look into this story and see if it was true. Recently I tried a Google search on the subject, but the best I could come up with was this page which seems to write off the story as a myth or conjecture (my French is not as good as I would like, I'm afraid). Does anyone else remember this Auf Der Mar article, or others making the same claim that the "Je me souviens" slogan is taken out of context? And is there any truth to it at all?

Is there a name for this branding concept?

Is there a name for a tagline or slogan made of several independent words that form a descriptive phrase? And do you have any examples of it in use? An (admittedly poor) example would be along the lines of:

SomeCompany, Inc.
Affordable.
Widget.
Creations.

It describes concisely SomeCompany, Inc. -- "Affordable Widget Creations". But each of the words can stand alone to emphasize a "how" or "what" characteristic of the company: Rather than simply selling, they make (Creations) a specific product (Widgets) at a reasonable price (Affordable).

I know I've seen this used a number of times and I'm trying to come up with concrete examples, but my brain is failing me. I do seem to recall that what originally caught my attention was the emphasis on each word's independence with the use of the period.

Extra discussion point: Is there a downside (trite, generic, dated, etc.) to this kind of branding or marketing?

How do we get more volunteers involved in the church

Posting for a friend: She needs help getting volunteers to help out with various church functions. My friend is the volunteer coordinator at a local church (Catholic if that matters). She also does admin and logistics for the church and various events.

They need help getting volunteers at all levels from simple things like doing readings or being an usher at mass all the way up to organizing events. The goal is around 1-5 hours per week from people who commit but they have trouble finding more than 2 ushers for some Sunday services with attendance of 700-800 even after opening it to youths (14+)

She is hoping for any kind of help she can get, something like a slogan (Make our church your church?), marketing method, pep talk or anecdotes to encourage participation from the 4000+ registered parishioners.

Some other useful points:
*Volunteer activities are typically completed by a small core of super-involved individuals (who apparently do not alienate/discourage new volunteers)
*New volunteers do not remain involved for long periods of time, typically more responsive to being assigned very specific tasks instead of broader roles
*Other churches in the community face similar problem finding/retaining productive volunteers

Have any of you faced this type of issue? What strategy have you used at home/work/volunteering to drum up support and involvement? How can my friend improve involvement from people who already spend 1-2 hours per week of going to mass?

dental lab tag line -- win me five hundred bux

Help me win $500! I need a tag line/slogan for the 20th anniversary of my employer (a dental lab). I work for a dental laboratory (we make teeth ... partials, dentures, crowns, bridges ... those kind of things). We've been in business nearly twenty years. Management has set up a contest to come up with a new tag line for the company.

The current tag line is: "Expect quality. Depend on our service. Receive value."

The best I could think of are pretty lame ("In your mouth for 20 years"), overly generic ("20 years of dental excellence"), or too cutesy ("20 years of first impressions"). I'm positive the MeFites can do better!

If you're a dental professional and I win using your tag line, I'll hook you up with some SWAG.

Since I'm sorta speaking as an employee of the company, let me cover my rear: Opinions and views expressed above are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of my employer or any other party (including but not limited to my SO, BFF, HR, A/R, BofA, NFL, MLB, LMNOP, and OMFGLOLBBQ).

Please help with slogan ideas for my technical support team. I work for a small satellite internet company, in the Tech Support department. I'd like to increase our sense of being a team by making some t-shirts just for us, but I am blanking on a slogan, and would appreciate some outside input.

A good slogan for us would express the following, in decreasing order of importance: 1) We love helping our customers 2) We know what we're doing 3) Our team is awesome. Including some reference to satellite internet (or teh intarwebs in general) would be nice.

ROFL ROFL - t-shirt help?

I would like a good t-shirt to wear at ROFLcon. However, it must be DIY. Suggestions? I am going to ROFLcon to go see mathowie on a panel and just say hi to some folks. I'd like an amusing/jokey/lol shirt to wear. All my techie t-shirts are old-school interesting but, I have decided, lame. I look decent in t-shirts and have some blank ones I could stencil, write on, spray paint or something about that level of craftiness. Probably no iron-ons. I do not want to buy a t-shirt, no matter how clever it is, but I'd be happy to reverse-engineer a really good design or slogan.

Notable facts: I am a short, friendly, late-30's, decent-looking female with a fairly good tech understanding and sense of humor. I have a respectable rack. I do not wear glasses. I have pretty normal hair. Subtle or unix-y jokes are fine. Aggressive or sweary jokes probably less so. Cutting edge meme jokes okay. I don't know what the M/F ratio of this conference will be, but I'm guessing there will be fewer women than men. I have a few ideas, wanted some more. I'll be there two days. Thanks!

What happens in Vegas, Stays In Mexico?? Does anyone else remember the "What happens in *, stays in *" being used by Mexico (or some city therein) way before Las Vegas started advertising "What happens in (Las) Vegas, Stays in (Las) Vegas"?

I distinctly remember a Mexican town or Mexico itself advertising this very slogan years before the stupid Las Vegas ones. It's funny how quickly a slogan can be erased from the collective memory and reapplied to another thing. I suppose lots of money and advertising does that.

But am I remembering this wrong?

Drive-away special: $1999

Can you help me come up with a jokey slogan for a notional used car dealership? After considering dressing for Halloween as Kim Jong-Il, Rasputin, and Homer (the poet, not the Simpson), I have determined that I would actually like to dress as a used car salesman for a Halloween party this Friday night. Tomorrow I'll hit the local Goodwills for the loudest sport coat I can find, some white shoes, etc. I'd also like to pass out little business cards with the name of my "business" on them.

The archetype of the kind of slogan I'm looking for comes from the old joke about the fictitious film studio, Miracle Pictures:

If it's a good picture, it's a Miracle!

You know: a slogan which was clearly intended to mean one thing but actually reads like the opposite thing. I just can't come up with a clever one. Can you help me?

(Of course, the name of my company will be something like "Honest Sam's."

ACME Medical: Saving the world one IV pole at a time!

After helping me name a surgical table (inspiring pee-your-pants laughter) I now need your help with a slogan. Comedy welcome, serious replies equally appreciated. Our company manufactures and distributes medical equipment. Surgical tables, anesthesia machines, ventilators, monitors, etc. We specialize in high-tech OR/procedure equipment, as opposed to standard MD office stuff.

Current slogans include:
"Operating within your budget."
"Where price meets quality in new and used medical equipment."

Requirements: short and sweet, intended for use on tradeshow booth signage.

Revolutionary War Slogans?

Revolutionary War Slogans? I' know "No Taxation without Representation", but what other authentic revolutionary war slogans were out there? I've tried Wikipeda, and google-fu, and have seen quotes, but no rallying cries, ala "Remember the Maine" and "54 40 or fight".

My company develops chromatography software. It has recently developed several ways of automating certain processes that will help the user save time and automate things. I'm trying to think of a collective name for them. "Timekeeper Technology" is one I've just thought of. Can you think of any others?

What's the original source of this slogan?

What actually did "whiten your teeth while you sleep"? More exactly, what's the original source of this phrase? It's become shorthand in some circles for the extravagant promises made by advertisers, but it occurred to me recently that it had to start somewhere. Was there a product that claimed (accurately or not) to do this?

I need to research the copyright holders and original authors of a famous slogan... You've all seen it: "It Will Be a Great Day When Our Schools Get all the Money They Need and the Air Force Has to Hold a Bake Sale to Buy a Bomber" Who wrote it? Who owns it? How does one research it?
