My Dad has a collection of nearly 12,000 35mm slides, which I want to digitize. They've been out in the garage for years, and many of them are 30 to 50 years old. I'd like to make them look as good as possible after scanning. Early results are not what I'd like.

My museum is about to set off on a big slide-scanning project. After finding out how much it would cost to outsource the scanning, we've decided to just buy a higher-end scanner and throw an intern at it. I'd like some guidance as to which scanner to buy.

My family has a collection of 35 lantern slides dating from the 1880-90's. They are black & white photographic images, with some handcolored. They are in reasonably good condition and I would like to somehow transfer them into a digital format. Is it OK to lay these on a scanner, or will strong light exposure risk damaging the slide images? Is there a better way to photograph or reproduce the images?

My dad has many thousands of photos in 35mm slide and print form (the output of 40 years as a photography hobbyist). He's looking for an archival-quality photo scanner that can handle both formats, as well as provide some degree of bulk-load automation. What should he get?

I just got a diana f+ camera. I have shoten? shot, 3 rolls of film and none of them have turned out well. All of the images are extremely blurry. We have tried out the fish eye, the telephoto and the wide angle lenses as well as the color gels and the long exposures. So far only the long exposures seem to be turning out at all. None of the other pics display the attributes of the accessories used. There are no color changes or changes in the clarity. SO my question is...what am I doing wrong?

I'm after for a cheap solution to create very (very) basic captions and turn them into slides for a clunky carousel projector. Lo-fi
is the aesthetic - it's for a theatre show.

Ten years ago, I found a pair of amazing metal slides while biking around in San Francisco. They were somewhere in Diamond Heights.
Even at the time, they seemed impossibly old-school - they must have been 30 feet high, and they were FAST!
I've never found them again. Where were/are they?

I'm embarking on the task of archiving my family's collection of several thousand images, from prints, negatives of all sizes, slides and the odd tinplate. I've got what I feel is a good film/slide scanner (Nikon SuperCoolscan 9000 ED) and a half-decent flatbed scanner (Epson Perfection 1650 Photo), and I'm using VueScan on Mac OS X. I've read some of the other AskMeFi posts on similar projects, and I still have three questions about advice for making these the best digital archives they can be, specifically on colorspace, calibration and large negatives (and any other advice welcome):

I have a large box of found vacation slides from the 1950s-1970s. Apparently the Becketts lived in Los Angeles (slides were
found in Texas) and traveled all over the world... Vienna, Bali, Lisbon, Singapore, Barcelona, Hong Kong, etc. There are
perhaps 800-1500- all processed at Kodak Labs and packaged pristinely in little yellow boxes. I'm leaving the country (US)
for a while and would like to either get rid of them or keep them for something interesting in the future. Any ideas?

PowerPoint question: I want the basic layout of all my slides to have a title, a website screenshot on the left with a semitransparent shadow, and bullets on the right. The basic layout is easy, the automatic image formatting is not. Is there any way to apply a default style to all your images?
