I'd like to buy a bulk (i.e., 20+ in a stack) slide scanner that will work with recent-model (usb/firewire/thunderbolt) macs. I see prices ranging from $1200 for used Braun scanners, to some real cheapies that look like a mistake waiting to happen for under $200. What's in the middle? Most of the used Nikons in the $500 range on ebay are SCSI only; I'd love something that works with current hardware (i.e., NOT SCSI) and has a pretty wide gamut - something approximating the RAW quality I get from my digital SLR. Is there hope for me?

Let's say you're making a playlist called "Bad Girls & Slide Guitars". Let's say the first song is 'Hell on Heels' by the Pistol Annies. What would the next songs be?

Looking for the name of a toy I had in the 1970s that had 2 long ropes with handles on both ends, one person would pull their ropes apart and send a football shaped ball with the ropes running through it flying towards the other person. The ball on ours was red, the handles were blue - but who knows, it may have come in different colors. My sister swears it was called the Woosh, but I haven't found it via that name. I want to buy one for my niece & nephew if I can find it - and I think having the name will be the key to locating one. But if you know where I can get one, even better.

My family has a collection of 35 lantern slides dating from the 1880-90's. They are black & white photographic images, with some handcolored. They are in reasonably good condition and I would like to somehow transfer them into a digital format. Is it OK to lay these on a scanner, or will strong light exposure risk damaging the slide images? Is there a better way to photograph or reproduce the images?

I'm looking for a film and slide scanner and wonder what people suggest. Am I better off getting a dedicated slide/film scanner or do some of the higher end flatbeds work just as well (or better)?

Where can I pick up Black and White film in Lima, Peru? There´s an abundance of photo processing shops with colour film but can´t find anywhere which sells black and white film (Fuji Neopan, Ilford etc) or more specialised slide film.

My dad has many thousands of photos in 35mm slide and print form (the output of 40 years as a photography hobbyist). He's looking for an archival-quality photo scanner that can handle both formats, as well as provide some degree of bulk-load automation. What should he get?

Recommendation for professional 35mm slide scanning services, either through the mail or in the Washington D.C. metro area. Best recommendation for extremely long term archival storage of slides. About 400-500 slides.
