I live in a semi-rural area and am incredibly frustrated with my area's landline phone provider. The provider has a monopoly in the area and delays fixing constant faults for many weeks. I want to go completely Skype, wireless and mobile. What are my options? [more inside]

I'm in the process of sorting through communication options for my step-daughter who will be spending the next several months in France (We live in the US). I've narrowed it down to a combination of Skype (on Mac OS X at both ends), the purchase of a cell phone locally in France when she arrives, and the use of a prepaid phone card for international calls... I'm hoping for some feedback from those that have tried these methods, and any other ideas you might have, there is, of course.... [more inside]

Skype Headset Filter: I'm planning on buying a Koss SB45 headset for skyping. My main question: What kind of connector comes off of the end of it [is it just ONE 1/8" miniplug??], and will it work with my Powerbook 15" 1.33Ghz G4 without a USB dongle? (Sub-question: Any skype headsets you'd recommend over the SB45?) [more inside]

I am getting the wrong price when I try to buy SkypeIn. Everywhere I look on the Skype webpage, the cost is listed as $12 for 3 months and $38 for 12 months. When I go to check-out, however, it offers me the choice of $18 for 3 months or $60 for 12 months. Is this a poorly-coordinated price hike or something wrong with the check-out?

Does Skype "smooth" your voice to make it sound mellower, more seductive etc.? That's my impression; but is there any evidence to support it? I suppose an analogous means of customer retention might be the use in shops of "slimming mirrors".

We've decided to get rid of our landline and go with a softphone. The question is: which to choose? We have cable internet. We'd need call in (our own phone number) and call out (ability to call landlines from our PC). For the most part, we'd be talking to people with landlines. I know we can't dial 911 with these-- we have an old cell phone (no more minutes left, but kept charged up) for this purpose. What's better? Skype? Gizmo? Yahoo? Or something else?
We know that USB handsets are available with Skype-- what about the others? Also, how would this work with a home network? Are we restricted to calling from one PC or can we do it from any PC in the house?

Skype with a Mac.. I'm thinking of starting to use Skype, but there's one thing holding me back. What wireless USB phones are compatible with the Mac, and where can I get them in the UK? I know Ipevo now provide drivers for the Free-1 phone, but wireless is important to me - without it my wife will never use it.

SkypeOut. Just took a credit for 10 $, but the sound quality is markedly worse than the skype-to-skype calls, and also worse than the normal phone. Also, there seems to be a delay in the conversation, which makes it useless for, say, business calls. Any ideas how to remedy this? Or will we have to wait for Skype 0.2? [more inside]
