I have this budding (temporarily) long distance relationship where we put a lot of burden on phone calls (and IM and e-mail). Due to numerous factors I will give detail about in the extended, I am looking for cheap short term alternatives to cut down on costs for long distance and would appreciate some advice. [more inside]

My husband and I are visiting Korea soon. Is the famous WiFi in Korea ubiquitous enough to use his iPhone 4 for web browsing and Skype? We're also renting an SKTelecom cellphone, but we'd like to use the iPhone for data-related tasks and travel apps. Is it just a matter of his iPhone jumping on any Wifi network (without incurring any roaming charges)? We're coming from the US (AT&T), and staying in Jeju and Seoul. [more inside]

I would like to display Karaoke lyrics over a live webcam feed. This means I might need a skype (or equivalent) plugin that plays the music & lyrics, or find some karaoke software with the ability to display lyrics over a transparent background. (That is, to have windowless karaoke display, and run the webcam feed behind it. ) All the software (I can find) to play .CDG (karaoke lyric standard) files forces them to be played with an image background, or over a video file. I'm about to video Skype for the first time, using my macbook pro's built-in isight camera. The person I'm Skyping with has never met me, but has a whacky sense of humor, so I thought it might be amusing to start out by feeding in a few seconds of stock video of a hunky male stripper (cutting it off, and replacing it with my geeky real self, long before it gets lewd). Is there any way to do this?

We live in South America and our son is in need of a native English speaker to work with him on pronunciation. There is no one here who can help, but as luck would have it, we have a relative in the states who is a licensed speech therapist who can help over Skype. We're looking for camera and speaker suggestions for both sides - assuming we have solved the bandwidth issue, is there a camera for a PC that would be ideal for this? Are there other speech professionals who have done this before?

How do I search the contents of all Skype chat history on OS X? Skype's regular search feature only searches the topics of old chats, but not the contents. I swear I found a way to do this some time back that involved typing some undocumented commands to create an index and then search it, but Google is failing me. I do have Skype's feature to keep chat history forever turned on.

Another ditch-the-cell-phone-bill/Google Voice question: Google Voice made me give them my cell phone number (800-OLD-CELL) when I signed up, and then assigned me a new number (800-GGL-VOIC). However, I don't have calls forwarded from the Google Voice number to my actual cell phone - Instead, everything goes to voicemail. What happens if I cancel my old cell phone number? [more inside]
Starting in about a month, my wife and I will both be working from home a fair amount. We are both on the phone a lot. We want to pay as little as possible and are trying to figure out how to deal with the phone situation. I currently use Google Voice and make and receive most of my calls on the home phone, which works well for me. I'm not sure how to deal with the apparent need for 2 phones. Both of us have cell-phones, but we're on the phone so much that we'd rather not be on the cell phones all day. We could obviously just get a 2nd Google Voice number for incoming calls, but I'm not sure how to deal with receiving or making calls while the other person is on the home phone. Thoughts? Should we get a Skype or Vonage number? Just get a 2nd landline? Any good free/cheap options that I'm missing? We're in Portland, OR if that matters. Thanks!
This new orange box keeps turning up in my skype window, and it is annoying! I can't find any option to get rid of it forever; have you gotten rid of it? This has only started in the last few days. I have not upgraded Skype (22.214.171.124).
