Critique my downhill ski kit & tell me how to make the most of it.

New to Colorado, grew up skiing a couple times a year on the east coast, then stopped for a while. Now I have a local season pass. Help me acclimate to skiing out west once a week or so this winter, given my current abilities, gear, budget, and goals. [more inside]

Should I stay or should I go (ski trip edition)?

How much harder is it to ski (x-country) carrying a heavy pack? How much harder is a four day trip than a two-day one? How hard is it to switch from one type of ski to another? Can I do this? [more inside]

Where can I demo a whole bunch of skis?

I've heard tell that there are some ski mountains that are particularly well set up to, for a single price, spend the day trying a whole bunch of demo skis. I'm in the NYC area. Know of any within a 5-hour driving distance which either has this all the time or on one specific day per year? [more inside]

Where to buy skis in or somewhat near NYC

After many years of non-skiing, I'm a-comin back. I went through the rental rigmarole last weekend and it preeeetty much sucks, so I'm waiting till February for the end-of-season sales to kick in, and then getting skis, boots, poles. The question is: Where? I'm in NYC, but willing to drive up to, say, an hour. My fantasy is to find a place with a lot of selection, really good prices, and a patient, knowledgeable salesperson. If I can have only one of those things, it would be the patient, knowledgeable salesperson. Thanks, and...woo hoo! skiing!

Should our child learn skiing or snowboarding first, and when?

Should we start our toddler out on skis or snowboard? We are avid snowboarders and want her to ultimately take up boarding. However, is skiing easier for kids because they can hoof it along on the flats and it's like walking, and they can snow-plow? Any first-hand experience? Recommendations?

Also, what age is best for her to begin? (I started at 4)
