I've noticed a recent change in my skin's texture on my chest and shoulders/upper back. Seems to have happened overnight & it kicked in about a month back. They're these new, small areas (about 2x2cm) where the skins surface/texture has changed from smooth to bumpy, kind of like when you get goosebumps, but very small, and hard to see by eye, easily felt though. These little areas don't itch, there is no redness or color changes. What could be the reason for this?? [more inside]

I inquired online about the price of a particular work of art from a gallery in greater Boston. The response contained the following sentence: "This particular piece is listed for $X which is certainly a great deal of money and yet, relative to a lot of the contemporary fine art world, given his skin, demand, and sizing it is a good price." What does the word "skin" mean in this context? Or is it just a typo for "skill"?
It is England, and we are on day one of (another) three day heatwave. Temperatures are peaking at 35C (95F) and there is more to come. Being English, I'm (a) not used to it and (b) don't have domestic air conditioning. There is, however, really good air conditioning in some supermarkets (especially Marks and Spencer food hall) and the cinema. But what, especially in the supermarket, is the least you can wear in a socially acceptable manner (remember: England)? Are there any kind of relevant guides or guidelines?

I am a 37yo man and have good skin. I don't have acne or spots. For some reason my nose is different. It always seems shiny and the pores are visible. It is almost like my nose doesn't match the rest of the skin on my face. It is like this not matter what. If I wash it well with soap and water or just water and try to not fuss with it too much. Any idea how I can remedy this? Thank you in advance

I have a prominent mole on my face that I'm just tired of looking at -- plus, it's gotten bigger since I was young. I have a consultation with a plastic surgeon soon. (I'd rather he do it than my dermatologist, to minimize the risk of scarring.) If a mole is benign, does insurance typically cover its removal? [more inside]

My left eyelid has been swollen for about a year. Last year I had my first bout of eczema (atopic dermatitis) that hit my left eyelid. I went to the doctor thinking it was an eye infection, and was prescribed a 2% hydrocortisone creme. That seemed to work, but I have been dealing with on-and-off eczema in various spots ever since. However my left eyelid later got infected, and I went to my dermatologist and got some antibiotics which took care of it-- but the swelling never fully went away. It's not active eczema, it's not infected... my dermatologist and opthamologist have no idea and no suggestions. It isn't red or painful or itchy, and I haven't noticed anything that makes it worse or better food-wise. I definitely notice it's swollen, I can feel it when my eye is open. It's also very apparent in the mirror and in photos. Any ideas on what this is or what to do about it? Or even what kind of doctor to see?
My five year old's palms feel rough when they're wet but normal when they're not wet. What gives?
I get a pimple on my chin every month just before my period. It's kind of hard. It leaves a dark mark behind, and the back of my head hurts if I touch it(weird, I know!). I know that the basic mechanism is hormones, but I don't understand why these hormones only affect my chin and I don't understand why there's always exactly ONE and never more than one or it never skips a month. Do all my pores get together and vote for one pore to be the host? How does this work? [more inside]

In April 2012 I had a large sudden blister on my leg, it became infected after it burst and it took lots of antibiotics and wound dressings for about 6 weeks to heal. A spider bite, or so I thought, until a year (1/14) later I got another one right next to it. And recently 2 more on my opposite ankle (one in november and the other a month later). I'm a little scared now because I have had 2 in quick succession. What is going on? [more inside]

I've now had 3 episodes of a weird skin thing (specifics within) that is painful and perplexing and google-resistant. I have an appointment with a dermatologist, but it isn't for several weeks, and I'm not even sure this is actually one for the dermatologist, rather than a GP or even an OB/Gyn. It starts with hot itchy skin and evolves to a pimple-like rash, and it is exclusive to my jawline and chin. Do you know what it might be, and exactly which doctor I should see about it? I really hate going to doctors, so I’d love to get the right doc the first time with this. [more inside]

My cat has a few small, uninfected scratches on bridge of its nose. I have washed gently with warm water and a cloth, but am wondering if anyone can recommend something simple I can apply to promote healing? Could be an over the counter ointment made for the purpose or something I have at home like olive oil, jojoba oil, or aloe, but I don't really want anything medicated. YANMvet but, cat parents, what have you used?

My husband and I are honeymooning on Gran Canaria and, in a silly mood, got henna tattoos from a stall on the oceanside. I've read that the art of film making was developed with white skin in mind. Are there articles or books that describe this bias in more detail? I remember reading somewhere that The Wire, having to film many scenes featuring only black people, developed techniques to film black skin more effectively. Is that true? Thank you.
I'm happy with the shower gels that I use. It's an assortiment of Sanex products (I like variety). On paper or on the web, that company is all about the pH balance this, hydratation that, skin protection here, deep moisturization there. But does it really make a difference, or is soap basically soap? [more inside]
This past weekend a dark brown blotch appeared on my daughter's finger. It kind of looks like someone took a brown marker and just dabbed it quickly. My daughter wouldn't let us touch it at first and she kind of acted like it hurt but wouldn't confirm or deny it hurting. There is no difference in texture to the skin - it's not a scab. It's just discoloration. [more inside]

Hi, everyone. So I had a very bad reaction to a face mask I made at home using matcha green tea powder and lemon juice to treat my acne scarring. I left it on for just over an hour, and now my face has tiny red bumps all over it! It's itchy, flaky, has dry patches all over and it's burning like crazy! I've applied lemon on my face numerous times before and never had any problems, so it might have been the combination with the matcha powder. My face looks like a swollen tomato. Any idea on how to make the bumps and dry skin go away? I'll go see a doctor tomorrow but I'm just wondering what I can do in the meantime to make my face heal? Thanks so much!
Hi there, this is something that's been on my mind a lot lately and I was wondering about the opinions of others. Has anyone out there actually tried medical treatments that are supposed to make you look younger? Specifically, laser skin resurfacing, laser skin rejuvenation, or the 'dreaded' facelift?? (I say dreaded because it has a bad reputation.) It's hard to know what the results are without actually asking someone who has undergone it- not to mention that it would be incredibly rude to inquire. I don't trust any of the online review sites, so I'd appreciate everyone's personal anecdotes about these options. [more inside]
