YANM...I don't even know what

I've now had 3 episodes of a weird skin thing (specifics within) that is painful and perplexing and google-resistant. I have an appointment with a dermatologist, but it isn't for several weeks, and I'm not even sure this is actually one for the dermatologist, rather than a GP or even an OB/Gyn. It starts with hot itchy skin and evolves to a pimple-like rash, and it is exclusive to my jawline and chin. Do you know what it might be, and exactly which doctor I should see about it? I really hate going to doctors, so I’d love to get the right doc the first time with this. [more inside]

Safe ointment for cat to help heal minor skin irritation?

My cat has a few small, uninfected scratches on bridge of its nose. I have washed gently with warm water and a cloth, but am wondering if anyone can recommend something simple I can apply to promote healing? Could be an over the counter ointment made for the purpose or something I have at home like olive oil, jojoba oil, or aloe, but I don't really want anything medicated. YANMvet but, cat parents, what have you used?

Got a PPD tattoo - now what?

My husband and I are honeymooning on Gran Canaria and, in a silly mood, got henna tattoos from a stall on the oceanside. Back at the hotel, I googled for tips on henna tattoo care and discovered that the vendor used "black henna" containing PPD, which can cause severe skin reactions and further health problems. Was the art of film making developed with white skin in mind?

I've read that the art of film making was developed with white skin in mind. Are there articles or books that describe this bias in more detail? I remember reading somewhere that The Wire, having to film many scenes featuring only black people, developed techniques to film black skin more effectively. Is that true? Thank you.

Shower gels... is one better than another?

I'm happy with the shower gels that I use. It's an assortiment of Sanex products (I like variety). Dark brown blotch randomly appeared on my daughter's finger, pic inside

This past weekend a dark brown blotch appeared on my daughter's finger. It kind of looks like someone took a brown marker and just dabbed it quickly. My daughter wouldn't let us touch it at first and she kind of acted like it hurt but wouldn't confirm or deny it hurting. There is no difference in texture to the skin - it's not a scab. It's just discoloration. [more inside]

Allergic reaction to DIY face mask

Hi, everyone. So I had a very bad reaction to a face mask I made at home using matcha green tea powder and lemon juice to treat my acne scarring. I left it on for just over an hour, and now my face has tiny red bumps all over it! It's itchy, flaky, has dry patches all over and it's burning like crazy! I've applied lemon on my face numerous times before and never had any problems, so it might have been the combination with the matcha powder. My face looks like a swollen tomato. Any idea on how to make the bumps and dry skin go away? I'll go see a doctor tomorrow but I'm just wondering what I can do in the meantime to make my face heal? Thanks so much!

I look 37 at 22, please advise?

Hi there, this is something that's been on my mind a lot lately and I was wondering about the opinions of others. Has anyone out there actually tried medical treatments that are supposed to make you look younger? Specifically, laser skin resurfacing, laser skin rejuvenation, or the 'dreaded' facelift?? (I say dreaded because it has a bad reputation.) It's hard to know what the results are without actually asking someone who has undergone it- not to mention that it would be incredibly rude to inquire. I don't trust any of the online review sites, so I'd appreciate everyone's personal anecdotes about these options. [more inside]

Hyperpigmentation came back - help me get rid of it once and for all

I got a pimple about 1.5 years back, which I wasn't used to getting, and since it was smack dab in the middle of my face, I kept picking and prodding at it until a combination of chemicals and heat turned it into a burn. That burn left a small brown scar on my face I tried fading creams, exfoliating and 25% mandelic acid and it didn't work. Finally I tried 18% TCA peel. I did the peel twice and the brown scar was 100% gone. I should note that while healing I would spray it with 3% food grade hydrogen peroxide, then coat it with this anti bacterial cream and then cover with this other prescription cream i had used when removing DPN from a past procedure which left my face without any scars. Wrinkle cream advice for an ageing old bag ;-)

I have sensitive skin so I need to be careful with creams. I know nothing at all about wrinkle creams and serums so I could do with some advise please! I'm in Australia, so would need to be able to buy any recommended product here. Thanks!

What does skin biopsy reveal in lab tests?

Hi MeFi, I've asked about skin issues before sometime last year and I still haven't found what it could be. My dermatologist said that I have become immune/resistant to topical treatments (benzyl perox, clindamycin, clindamycin, erythromycin) and that he needed to take a sample and conduct a skin biopsy. On a first whim, he said I likely have 'Folliculitis' but he's not sure since my skin didn't respond to topical treatments. So today he did a skin sample and I'm just curious to what exactly do lab-results show when it comes to skin biopsy. Do they look for certain bacteria or do they get an overall result of what has been in my body as far as food, drugs, liquids go? All I really use 'recreationally' is marijuana through a vaporizer to treat my neck pain but this dermatologist is sorta ultra-conservative and a friend of the family so I'd hate have to explain stupid things to him should they even come up during the test results. TL;dr - Do Skin Biopsy lab results show drug use or just skin bacteria? Thanks everyone!

I woke up with two marks on the inside on my arm three days ago, which I originally thought was a bruise. The marks haven't faded or changed colours, and now I am wondering if it's some kind of burn? They aren't raised at all. I don't remember hurting my arm (it doesn't hurt when I touch them) and I haven't changed my soap or anything. I do have eczema but my rash doesn't look anything like this. What kind of skin treatment should I get?

I have good skin, but for the past 15 years I have had a single dime-sized discoloration on my cheek-- a faded red color but not itchy, scaly or raised. I think it is leftover from when I had an irritated dry patch there that I picked at when I was a teen. Anyway I'd like to do something about it, and my husband gave me a gift card to a medi-spa that offers a variety of different kinds of peels, microdermabrasion, etc. I'd like to know what type of treatment is best for helping get rid of this type of spot. Not interested in a long recovery time (a day or two is ok) or having to go back for multiple visits unless absolutely necessary. I'm overwhelmed by the options but would like to use this gift certificate towards a treatment that will minimize this discoloration, without having to consult a dermatologist first. (YANMD) thanks!

I am a 53 year old woman. What should I be using on my face?

I've always had radiant skin, according to family members and complete strangers, and am only recently beginning to notice a few extra ... laugh lines. I had read somewhere that I should no longer be washing my face with soap. What would be good products to clean and moisturize with that wouldn't be too terribly expensive? Up until just a few years ago I used Neutrogena bar soap (oily skin formula in the summer and regular the rest of the year) and loved it. I was an oily T zone type. I'm not a girly girl and don't want to take a great deal of time with this. Thanks.

Sensitive Skin -- What are the possible causes?

Hi, I am hoping to get to the bottom of something that has been driving my nuts ever since I was a kid. I have hypersensitive skin to touch. It turns red (or sorta faded yellow/white) the second it is pressed. If I poke my arm with a finger I can see a circle that fades from red, yellowish to white and then it goes back to normal. All within 10-15 seconds. I noticed it being annoying whenever I went for a haircut and scissors glided along my forehead. It would leave a red mark for the next 5-10 minutes. Secondly whenever I went in for a massage, the therapist would joke that I bruise easily and turn red within a second of being touched. Could my blood type be the reasoning behind this? I am ' A- ' and I am just taking a wild shot at dark here. Was hoping someone with experience could clue me in to why my skin acts the way it does. My roots are predominantly southern-european with some distant Turkish/Ottoman ancestry. Green eyes and moderately white skin complexion. I'm not Irish-white by any means but white like most southern Europeans. Thank You for your insight!
