I am 33, newly pregnant and most of my usual skin care products are not allowed (retin-a, green peels, botox etc) I am interested in purchasing one of the more expensive beauty lamps using Red LED lights (not hand held) but I would really like to hear some experiences before I shell out any big bucks. Any other pregnancy skin hacks are welcome! My budget is about $1300 a year... but I like to spend it on things that have visual longer lasting effects. Thanks in advance!
What can I use to solve my terribly dry hand problem? I would prefer natural solutions, like oils (but coconut oil isn't working, see below the fold). I would accept unscented creams that I can buy at a drug store. I would rather not spend $45 per ounce of some lady cream at sephora. (yes, diet, water, sleep, humidifier. I'm on those things.) thanks! [more inside]
Ok. So I'm a 40 year old woman and use basic Nivea moisturiser every day but have some serious wrinkles around my eyes and forehead that I'd like to minimise or at least stop them getting worse. I have sensitive skin so I need to be careful with creams. I know nothing at all about wrinkle creams and serums so I could do with some advise please! I am looking for the best available product in the cheap to mid range end of the price spectrum. I'm sure there are some that do a good job without having to remortgage the house! I'm in Australia, so would need to be able to buy any recommended product here. Thanks!
I've managed to reach my mid-30s with no acne and suddenly it's AcneTown all over my face. Can you help me clear it up? [more inside]
Hi MeFi, I've asked about skin issues before sometime last year and I still haven't found what it could be. My dermatologist said that I have become immune/resistant to topical treatments (benzyl perox, clindamycin, clindamycin, erythromycin) and that he needed to take a sample and conduct a skin biopsy. On a first whim, he said I likely have 'Folliculitis' but he's not sure since my skin didn't respond to topical treatments. So today he did a skin sample and I'm just curious to what exactly do lab-results show when it comes to skin biopsy. Do they look for certain bacteria or do they get an overall result of what has been in my body as far as food, drugs, liquids go? All I really use 'recreationally' is marijuana through a vaporizer to treat my neck pain but this dermatologist is sorta ultra-conservative and a friend of the family so I'd hate have to explain stupid things to him should they even come up during the test results. TL;dr - Do Skin Biopsy lab results show drug use or just skin bacteria? Thanks everyone!
Hello. Female, 33, I've been using retin-a for years but never in the eye area. I would like to start using a very light .025 cream around that area but I'm really not sure yet, I've heard that it makes the area look crepey but that it then really improves. Have any of you beauties taken that plunge? What happened? How did it work for you?
How long do I have to be exposed to 'bad UV' to be at risk of negative effects? [more inside]
My girlfriend and I have silver wedding rings. Unfortunately, they apparently contain nickel, which we are having a bad reaction to. We love these rings and want to keep them. But we can’t wear them now. Do you know of a protective coating we could apply to the rings, or anything else we could do to wear the rings in comfort?
I've always followed the same, for want of a better word, 'beauty' regimen and until now there have been no issues. But now suddenly, I am experiencing many appearance-related issues and having to rethink decades-old methods. My problems are with my hair and skin. Is this a thirties thing? I could do with some advice on how to look decent again, as well as some help dealing with the emotional repercussions of suddenly looking terrible all the time. [more inside]
I've been struggling with a few growing patches of eczema on my hand for about four months now, and it is really starting to have consequences for my quality of life. It's getting to the point where I'm becoming quite depressed and am starting to isolate myself from my normal social situations, and I can't partake in my favourite hobby (cooking) because of the way it causes my skin to flare up, no matter how careful I am. My questions are, will a moderate case of eczema clear up on its own spontaneously, and what else can I do to care for it? [more inside]
Several months ago I started developing melisma (darkening of the skin on my upper lip). As I am a female who does not necessarily wish to be doing a Charlie Chaplin impersonation at all times, what, if anything, can be done about this? [more inside]
I am nearing 40, but my skin is in pretty good condition. My regimen to date: wash face in shower daily, and also wash with bar soap as needed. I'd like to make sure I take good care of my face in my coming fifth decade and beyond, perhaps with unguents, emollients, and tinctures! Do you have recommendations? Need not be overly manly, but preferably not particularly greasy. [more inside]
What is the rough pebbly texture that has shown up on my face in the last couple years, and can it be treated? [more inside]
I have a rash I have been dealing with unsuccessfully for the last four months, and need deciding how to proceed. General interest (well, if you're interested in rashes and bug bites and other matters dermatological), but people who know the Baltimore medical scene are particularly invited to read on. Red, blotchy snowflakes inside. [more inside]

I'm southeast Asian (Filipino), with deep yellow undertones and a very shiny T-zone. I need help finding a liquid-based foundation that both matches my skin tone, and helps control oil. I do not like using BareMinerals, because the powder gets all over the place, and I have no patience for cleaning brushes. What are the brands that I should be looking at? [more inside]
Whenever I have an animated conversation, whether in person or on the phone, my neck flushes bright splotchy red and feels super hot. [more inside]
I woke up with two marks on the inside on my arm three days ago, which I originally thought was a bruise. The marks haven't faded or changed colours, and now I am wondering if it's some kind of burn? They aren't raised at all. I don't remember hurting my arm (it doesn't hurt when I touch them) and I haven't changed my soap or anything. I do have eczema but my rash doesn't look anything like this. Here are a couple of photos - one, two. They are slightly browner than they appear.
I have good skin, but for the past 15 years I have had a single dime-sized discoloration on my cheek-- a faded red color but not itchy, scaly or raised. I think it is leftover from when I had an irritated dry patch there that I picked at when I was a teen. Anyway I'd like to do something about it, and my husband gave me a gift card to a medi-spa that offers a variety of different kinds of peels, microdermabrasion, etc. I'd like to know what type of treatment is best for helping get rid of this type of spot. Not interested in a long recovery time (a day or two is ok) or having to go back for multiple visits unless absolutely necessary. I'm overwhelmed by the options but would like to use this gift certificate towards a treatment that will minimize this discoloration, without having to consult a dermatologist first. (YANMD) thanks!
I like running in the cold, but it’s majorly screwing up my skin and drying out my already dry skin much more than usual. Please help me! [more inside]
I've always had radiant skin, according to family members and complete strangers, and am only recently beginning to notice a few extra ... laugh lines. I had read somewhere that I should no longer be washing my face with soap. What would be good products to clean and moisturize with that wouldn't be too terribly expensive? Up until just a few years ago I used Neutrogena bar soap (oily skin formula in the summer and regular the rest of the year) and loved it. I was an oily T zone type. I'm not a girly girl and don't want to take a great deal of time with this. Thanks.
I live in a cold, dry climate and have cold, dry hands. I dislike stopping work to apply lotion, because then I have to sit and wait for my hands to dry enough that I don't gunk up my laptop. A trivial problem for sure, but does anyone have any ideas for particular products or methods for moisturizing hands in a way that doesn't make them sticky and lotiony?
I'm looking to find / make / adapt a costume for a fine art photoshoot that I'm currently planning. The character in the picture is one from myth, who is said to have a skirt made from flayed human skin. Short of sending Ramsay Snow's a raven or becoming Buffalo Bill, how can I put together a costume that will look as creepy-beautiful as I need? [more inside]
Hi, I am hoping to get to the bottom of something that has been driving my nuts ever since I was a kid. I have hypersensitive skin to touch. It turns red (or sorta faded yellow/white) the second it is pressed. If I poke my arm with a finger I can see a circle that fades from red, yellowish to white and then it goes back to normal. All within 10-15 seconds. I noticed it being annoying whenever I went for a haircut and scissors glided along my forehead. It would leave a red mark for the next 5-10 minutes. Secondly whenever I went in for a massage, the therapist would joke that I bruise easily and turn red within a second of being touched. Could my blood type be the reasoning behind this? I am ' A- ' and I am just taking a wild shot at dark here. Was hoping someone with experience could clue me in to why my skin acts the way it does. My roots are predominantly southern-european with some distant Turkish/Ottoman ancestry. Green eyes and moderately white skin complexion. I'm not Irish-white by any means but white like most southern Europeans. Thank You for your insight!
I'm in Canada, and I was wondering if there is a good skin moisturizer for men. I cannot stand scents (I have asthma). I used to use something ten years ago called "Face Protector" from the Body Shop, and it was perfect. I find that many moisturizers out there are either scented, or have a waxy residue (Skin Protector melted in after about 2 minutes and was great). The Body Shop's newer products are too "watery" and also burn my skin (!) I have sensitive skin and also suffer from ingrown hairs after shaving or when my skin is dry.
My hands and feet are peeling, and I am at a loss for what to try, and my dermatologist can't see me for weeks. Halp! [more inside]

I have large patches of raised scars and broken blood vessels across huge areas of my body. (I'm an adult in my twenties.) None of this was ever self-inflicted, nor desired in any way at any time. Can any of this be fixed medically/surgically if I save up the money? What about the purple/red marks crisscrossing my flesh? I know that laser surgery is possible for single scars, and to remove tattoos, but as for improving skin quality, I have no idea. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So I've looked at some previous questions, and since they're not quite what I'm looking for, I'm hoping the hive mind can help me out. I've always had somewhat sensitive skin, particularly on my shoulders and back. When it's hot out, I tend to get irritated hair follicles and something akin to cystic acne (big welts), particularly in areas where I sweat. Changing t-shirts extra often helps a bit, but only so much. Now that I'm training for a marathon, it's so much worse. Weird random (possible rub spots?) on my legs, sides, and the regular trouble spots are just a mess. Any help is sorely appreciated!
I have never had an allergic reaction before so I don't know what to do. I just had hives that lasted for 2 weeks. I went to the doctor and they gave me some shots and it was gone in a day, but it came back the second week - I kept taking my meds so the hives are mostly gone now. Some spots were still kind of itchy but its mostly just dark marks on my face. I was wondering if anybody knows how to remove these dark spots on my face because I really feel uncomfortable looking at the mirror and seeing myself like I'm looking at a moon. [more inside]

About a month ago, I spent the day playing games on my laptop and it got really heated. I felt it get super hot on my left thigh, more so than usual, but it was still tolerable so I left it there. Now I have a huge spider-like red mark on my left thigh. I've had red marks before from my laptop, but none this "spider-vein like" and none that persisted this long. It also seems to fade and darken depending on my body temperature. If I take a warm shower, it will get SUPER dark and fade to its usual redness after a few hours. It doesn't hurt. It's not irritated. It doesn't itch. It doesn't peel. It's just odd and ugly. Can I expect it to fade over time? Is it permanent? What should I do? Is there a treatment for this? The only thing I've done is alter how I sit with my laptop. (no more lap)
My boyfriend has been away for four months, and will be returning in just over three weeks, i.e. a little earlier than planned. I haven't been completely slothful while he was away but I have fallen into some bad habits: late nights watching TV, drinking too much coffee, getting stressed about work, half-assing my workouts, moping around missing him. My skin is sallow, my midsection dough-y, and I feel like my light has dimmed a little. I really want to be at my best to welcome him home. So, what can I do/eat/get done to me to get my glow back over the next 21 days? Do you have a secret eating plan that gets quick results? A magical yoga routine? A miracle cream? [more inside]

When I cinch down my backpack's hip belt enough so that the weight actually rests on my hips, it tends to cause some soreness and, more annoyingly, a bit of a rash after a day of hiking. The pack is not that heavy (around 20 lbs/9kg with food and water - I'm not planning to do backpacking with a tent, just hut-to-hut hiking) and fits comfortably otherwise. [more inside]
I'm noticing some dead skin just hanging around on my face. It's especially obvious when applying foundation. I'd like to scrub this off, but my skin is quite sensitive and prior exfoliation attempts (St. Ives, Clean & Clear) have been irritating. Can you suggest any products or methods that would make for a really gentle exfoliation? Thanks!
