Nordic Combined

Olympic Nordic Combined skiing is male-only. Isn't this against the Olympic Charter? Do women want to compete? Is the sport being promoted to women? What would happen if a woman applied to compete?

Ski helmet: yes or no?

Do you wear a ski helmet? Why or why not? I've been skiing a few times, I'm wondering if I should start wearing one this year. Are they uncomfortable? Do they keep your head warm? And is there anything wrong with renting instead buying?

Training for Skiing

I've agreed on short notice to go skiing next week, and realize that I'm out of shape. Is there anything I can do to prepare myself so that I'm not putting myself at risk of injury, or that will keep my legs from feeling very sore after the first day? I only have 8 days.

Should our child learn skiing or snowboarding first, and when?

Should we start our toddler out on skis or snowboard? We are avid snowboarders and want her to ultimately take up boarding. However, is skiing easier for kids because they can hoof it along on the flats and it's like walking, and they can snow-plow? Any first-hand experience? Recommendations?

Also, what age is best for her to begin? (I started at 4)

Skiing with Kids

What's your experience skiing with children? I'm planning to take my class of fifth graders to the local ski area in February, a grand fieldtrip indeed, and a first for me as a teacher. As I compose the parent-letter this afternoon, I'm wondering if AskMe readers have any tips, advice, etc. for making such an experience comprehensible to non-skiing parents and, moreover, thoroughly enjoyable for a crew of non-skiing 10-11 year olds.
