Best place for low-intermediate luxury snowboarding in French Alps, mid-April?

Going with a Swedish friend to escape insane work schedule for a week or so in mid-April. Both in our late-twenties. Never been down in the Alps skiing before, so want to get a good feel for it. Money is not an issue if the experience is good (within reason people...). Looking for a nice comfortable hotel, good slopes, fun people, good food, _great_ scenery. (We're used to the beauty of Sweden/Norway, so needs to be up there :) [more inside]

Where to buy skis in or somewhat near NYC

After many years of non-skiing, I'm a-comin back. I went through the rental rigmarole last weekend and it preeeetty much sucks, so I'm waiting till February for the end-of-season sales to kick in, and then getting skis, boots, poles. The question is: Where? I'm in NYC, but willing to drive up to, say, an hour. My fantasy is to find a place with a lot of selection, really good prices, and a patient, knowledgeable salesperson. If I can have only one of those things, it would be the patient, knowledgeable salesperson. Thanks, and...woo hoo! skiing!

Park City ski schools?

Can you suggest the best ski school in Park City, UT for my wife and kids (age 4 and 7) who are all first-timers? Obviously can be different programs for each, but needs to be on the same mountain. 2-3 days would be ideal, to leave some time for getting out on our own thereafter.

Cross Country Boots Flaking Out

I have a pair of old 75mm Nordic Norm cross country ski boots. They're leather on the lower half and 'foamy' synthetic on the upper half. The problem is, the 'foamy' synthetic is supposed to be covered with some kinda of vinyl, but like most older xc boots, it seems that the coating has flaked off of my boots. Is there anyway I can make this foamy section weatherproof? Can I stop continued flaking?

Novice Snowboard Costs, Zero To Sixty?

How much should I budget to both equip myself and my wife for snowboarding and get us enough instruction so that we enjoy it? I mean, we own nothing with the possible exception of some gloves we could use, and we want to get ourselves outfitted and capable of boarding happily all day at places like Heavenly or Whistler. What will this cost, or, barring that, what do we need to budget for?

Snowshoeing, skating, or skiing for n00bs

My 21-year-old nephew and his girlfriend are coming to stay with me, my wife, and son in the Denver area right after New Year's. We'd like to take them to the mountains for a day trip or possibly overnight, but we're totally lame and don't know how to ski or skate. They probably know how to skate, but I don't think they ski.
