I just went skiing for the first time in Colorado with some friends and loved it. Now that I'm back in the Bay Area, where can I go skiing that's beginner friendly and close enough to make it a day trip?

I've skiied a total of six days on the west coast. I live on the east coast, but need help finding a place to ski that's somewhat nearby (6 hrs drive), has trails on my level, won't be filled with people, and would be good for a long weekend. Got any recommendations? More details inside...

I'm in New York City. I want to go skiing this thanksgiving weekend. None of the nearby resorts seem to be open (yet). What is my closest option? I'm willing to take a very long drive, but I'd like to avoid flying on thanksgiving. Thanks!

How do I best prepare my quads for skiing this winter. I will probably only go once or twice but I'd like to enjoy both of those times. I went once last year with out doing any prep it was the first time in about 6 years. Everything was fine except for my quads, it got to the point about half way through the day I couldn't go on. The rest of my body felt fine (tired but fine). What can I do to keep my quads from hurting so bad I have to end my day short?

I am new at skiing this year. I have access to a ski resort by Truckee in California. I have been skiing mostly the green trails but some of the easiest blue trails as well. I have trouble figuring out what the snow weather report means to decide what might be acceptable to me as a new skier. Can you please help me decipher the following snow report?

Does it exist yet? - A ski boot for super wide feet that uses snowboard boot type material on the outside part of the foot, but is hard plastic otherwise? (I have a wide foot and only snowboard boots are comfortable for me)

I'm going to
Whistler for a conference. I've never been skiing or snowboarding before and I'd like to. But I know so little about winter sports that it is hard to make the right choices or to even know what I need to know.

Is it possible for an advanced intermediate adult skier to become an expert (at Whistler, specifically) without shelling out $400 a day on private lessons? If the best answer is to simply keep practicing on my own, please augment with direct experience and words of encouragement.

Do you wear a ski helmet? Why or why not? I've been skiing a few times, I'm wondering if I should start wearing one this year. Are they uncomfortable? Do they keep your head warm? And is there anything wrong with renting instead buying?

I've agreed on short notice to go skiing next week, and realize that I'm out of shape. Is there anything I can do to prepare myself so that I'm not putting myself at risk of injury, or that will keep my legs from feeling very sore after the first day? I only have 8 days.
