Last Second President's Day Long Weekend Trip - NYC area

Last minute long weekend holiday getaway, Doable? Advice needed on taking a belated Valentines long weekend with my sweetie. We're in NYC and would prefer to drive. (Or take a train if the place is really acessable). A very nice hotel in the country would be great, we don't need a bunch of outside entertainment - beautiful scenery a plus. We're looking to leave late Thursday or early Friday and return early/mid-Monday. A hundred miles driving time would be ideal, we don't want to waste hours in the car or the train, but this is flexible. A resort or semi-contained hotel (ski lodge? We don't ski...) or a fancy B&B is I think what we're looking for, A getaway that doesn't require a jet trip, and provides maximum relaxation time. LGBT friendly a must. Iconoclastic regional weirdness welcome. Where should we look under short notice.

How to mount XC ski bindings?

How do I mount cross-country ski bindings? I'm a technically adept individual with the appropriate tools, but info (beyond "take it to the shop and let a pro do it!) is seemingly hard to find online... With the end of season clearances on cross-country skis here I've decided to buy a set of boots, skis, and bindings. Being a combination of thrifty and accustomed to doing things myself I want to handle mounting the bindings.

It's my understanding that mounting bindings to skis is a matter of finding the right location, drilling appropriately deep (but not all the way though) holes, putting a bit of epoxy in the holes, then screwing the bindings in place. I've also read that both skis, bindings, and boots are typically marked with a center line that is aligned to establish the proper mounting location.

So, I guess my questions are as follows:

- How specifically does one determine the location for the bindings?
- What type of epoxy (if any) should be used in the screw holes?
- Except for "as deep as needed for the screws", how should the holes be drilled? I presume any material dislodged / pushed up around the hole should be removed before seating the binding.
- Are there any particular torque specs for the screws, or is a typical "snug" sufficient?

Thank you!

Instructions for Salomon Automatic2 XC Bindings?

How do I operate early 90's vintage Salomon Automatic2 cross country/nordic ski bindings? Where can I find pictures/instructions on this binding? Can these bindings be adjusted or repaired? They're the original SNS standard and I still have the boots.

How to take up XC skiiing?

I"m looking for a winter aerobic activity to keep my fitness level up for mountain biking. Cross country skiing is one of them. What should I buy and how hard is it going to be to learn? A few data points:

- I'm pretty aerobically fit

- I'm a good snowboarder but have never been on a pair of skis in my life

- I already snowshoe, but one of my favorite trail systems is XC ski only. Also, XC skiing is supposed to be better for maintaining cycling muscle groups.

- I like to explore the backwoods

- Most of the trails I would use are not groomed and quite often will not be broken. There are a few Nordic centres around here with groomed trails which it would be nice to use now and then but probably only once or twice a season.

- I already have the right clothing... it's the skis, boots and techniques that I'm concerned about.

- I'll probably take a couple of lessons at a local Nordic center first... I'm looking for your advice in addition to theirs!

NB This previous question answered a few questions but not in much detail.
