I'm finally caving and buying a smartphone. Size is a major factor, but I'm also not sure how concerned I should be about the security of phones that are stuck with older versions of their OS. [more inside]
I am looking for a plastic box with a lid whose external dimensions are as close as possible (but strictly no greater than) 22x57x59 cm. Any ideas? I'm in the UK. [more inside]
I bought these in a 12.5, and while I love how they look there's no way I can keep them as currently sized. My arch is too high and it messes up how the tongue looks. If I bump up to a 13 will that solve my problem or will I just end up returning those as well? [more inside]

I often find myself looking for very specific furniture or home decor products. For example: right now I'm looking for a square basket (or open container) with a drawer in the base that measures no more than 11 inches wide and 22 inches long, and I was wondering if there was a way to search for home products by size, shape, and dimension in the same way you'd search for clothes by size?
Wife's b-day is coming up and has asked that I find her some plus size solid color crew socks. She wears a size 11 or 12 shoe. I never thought it would be this hard to find cute plus-size socks for her. Most are just black or white--boring. Or crazy patterns--not her style. Or $15 per pair--too expensive. Sheesh, does no one make a 6 pack or 8 pack of solid-colored cotton or cotton/poly plus size socks, like pink, blue, pastels, etc.? My google-fu is failing. Can you help?
For Thanksgiving this year, I decided that I will spatchcock/butterfly the turkey. Problem? I've never cooked a turkey before, and I need some help thinking through specific logistics of size and scissors. Detailed questions inside! [more inside]

I have a semi-fragile object for which I would like to find a 16" x 16" x 16" plastic (rubbermaid-type) storage box/tote/bin. Googling for specific sizes is frustrating. Anyone know where I could find or cross-reference specific sized boxes?
I developed a PDF in Illustrator that is 30MB. I need to get it down to an emailable ~1MB. I've found two services to help me with this: Opening in OS X Preview and doing a PDF export, or using smallpdf.com. Both make them small enough. However .... [more inside]

I need your hope. I cannot seem to find any clothiers who make jeans with a 31" waist and a 33" inseam. Alas, this is the size of jeans that would best fit my (apparently abnormal, disfigured) body. Do you know of a nice shoppe that would sell such an item to me? If so, I would be grateful beyond measure.

Like many modern US Americans, I've come to realize that I have a VERY inflated idea about what a "normal" portion size is. I need to get my head right, so that this is normal, not this. I want to be one of those people who gets nauseous at the very idea of eating too much food, and I want every tip/trick/mental hack/and idea in the book to do it! Tiny portion eaters of metafilter, please show me the way. [more inside]
I have sort of a bozo question about insects and physics. Why is it that when I shoo a wingless insect from, say, my arm, said insects falls the human equivalent of many storeys to the ground and doesn't die? Physics was never my forte, but this seems to defy some basic law, does it not?
I'm looking for low cost ideas for a carry-on bag. It's got to meet United Airline carry-on regulations (14" x 9" x 22"). Ideally, I'd like to be able to stash it under the seat, rather than overhead, since I'm small and it's hard to heft a loaded bag over my head. My son will be travelling with me, so that's not a hard and fast request-he can certainly get a bag in the overhead! Details: we're going to Signal Mountain Resort in the Grand Tetons, Wyoming beginning of September, for 6 days. Casual dress, hiking boots are what we'll be carrying with us. I am good at condensed packing, but have never tried to take a carry-on for this length of time. We'll be staying with my daughter and her husband, so we'll be able to skip a good amount of personal care stuff; we'll borrow from them, or get sample sizes when we get out there. I have not been here before, so hints and tips specific to packing for this area would be most welcome.

I am considering writing a novel/story that involves the idea of people living among us who are somewhere between three and eight inches tall, but I don't know enough about the physics of sound to know if normal height humans would be able to speak to these tiny people. Would their voices be too high-pitched to hear at all, or just very difficult to understand? Would our voices be understandable to them? [more inside]
I have a 24x40 poster that I would like to stick in a frame. I am reluctant to go to our local custom framing shop, because while they do very nice work, the price is usually in the >$100 range, which is more than I can spend right now. I've done some searching online, and haven't found great results, plus it is hard for me to assess the good vs. bad websites to purchase. Any recommendations on where I can get this size frame (or another size that my poster would look okay in - does not need to be super professional-looking), hopefully for less than $50? I can swing by a store like Target, but don't want to get into anything too complicated like looking at flea markets.

I've shaped up and lost a number of inches, mostly in the hip area. Yay. But now my sweaters that otherwise still fit are baggy at the bottom. For some reason, the bagginess is most pronounced in the back and they look awful. Is there a way, short of putting the inches back on, to make them more form-fitting at the bottom? [more inside]

Earlier this year I bought my wife a used 54cm Cannondale Six13 Feminine 3 Compact via Craigslist. It was in mint condition and I basically bought for a small fraction of the retail price - the lady who was selling it got it as a gift from her ex-boyfriend and just wanted to get rid of it. However, I misjudged my wife's frame size - she should be riding a smaller bike. Being that this bike has great components, I have decided to replace the frame. Help me do it! [more inside]

Too tiny! Too tall! Too deep! Is there a Goldilocks fridge out there that is just right? I need a counter-depth fridge (with freezer, top or bottom) that really is counter depth -- 24-25 inches at the most with door and handle -- without being more than 32 inches wide. Many so-called "counter-depth" fridges I've seen are 29-30 inches deep once the door and handles are included, and even when I find one the right depth, it's very wide, typically 35-36 inches. The best match I've found so far is the LG 349, but it's a full six inches narrower than my current (awkward, too deep) fridge, and the slightly larger version I've seen at a store still seems toy-sized and flimsy inside, while being a little too tall for me at 74 inches. I'm in Canada (Toronto, to be precise).
