How can I get a sitting gig with no experience?

How can I get a babysitting gig with no experience or references? I want a babysitting or even a nanny position, preferably with babies or younger children. I have a potential gig, because I ended up interacting with a toddler in a public place and we really hit it off.

However, I'm worried about getting the job because I don't have any babysitting references or experience. I have spent time watching my nieces and nephews over the holidays, here and there, but never alone.

I will be infant/child CPR certified soon. I do have character references but not any related to child care.

What questions would you ask me if you were considering hiring me? What would be your biggest concerns? Is there anything (truthful, of course) I could do/say that would make you feel more comfortable with me?

South Bay dog sitter?

Recommend a dog sitter in LA South Bay area? We're having a bit of trouble finding a dog sitter we like...one wasn't actually walking the dog every visit as requested, and one just didn't seem like a dog person, and couldn't even remember the dog's name during her visit! We're looking for overnight stays as well as the normal daily-walk type thing. Thanks!

Who will care for my kitty?

How do I arrange for the best possible care for our kitty while we're away from San Francisco for the holidays? Mr. Mostly and I will be away from home visiting family from December 20-January 3. Our cat Imogene will be just seven months old. We thought about taking her with us, but because she is a sweet but slightly neurotic girl (a shelter cat who was very undersocialized when we got her in July), that seemed like a very bad idea.

We thought about asking friends to come by to feed and give attention to her, but frankly, I'm not sure they're responsible enough to care for our baby, particularly during the holiday rush.

So, we figure our options are to board her or hire someone to come by. Which is preferable? Any recommendations for either a good kennel (although I rather cringe at that word) or reputable sitter in San Francisco or ideas for how to find such a thing? Craigslist maybe? How much should we expect to pay?
