Cool, easy tattoo parlor website template?

What should I use to set up a simple, cool-looking small business site for a non-techy friend? I bought my cousin-in-law 2 domains for Christmas related to his tattoo parlor. (I searched his small business and found that they didn't have a web page and some other business took the most obvious way to spell their URL.)

I've only hand written a webpage in HTML before or grabbed one of Dreamhost's default WordPress themes.

I don't want to become the business's tech support.

I just want to hand him a paper with a URL and a user name and password and there will be an easily update-able web page with the business, address, link to Google directions and blog and/or Twitter feed and a gallery (possibly a Flickr pull in?)

Do I use Google Sites? Is there a theme that is suitable for a pretty tough tattoo crowd that's easy to use?

Do I host it on my own Dreamhost with a WordPress theme? Is there a WordPress theme you'd recommend?

Low effort. Cool enough. Doesn't require a regular outlay of cash or tech effort. Help?

I am looking for a web site whose services are available in only a few markets--Chicago was one of them, maybe Atlanta and New York. The site was a dating site, but if I recall the concept, it was a date tonight or date within four hours. Very at random. But not http://www.iamfreetonight.com/. I've tried "sites like" on google but have come up short. Has anyone else seen this site?

Any Cloudy Nights folks on MeFi? I am googling around in getting going with backyard astronomy and Cloudy Nights appears to be (or to have been) a decent resource, but it has been nothing but failed MySQL connections and php pathing errors since I started digging. Any info? Is it dead, Bones? I did find this older AskMe which includes a bunch of good info, btw.

My wife and I will be going camping for the first time with our new 5th wheel camper. We want to go to Watertown New York but are not exactly sure where to stop along the way. We know we want to make two stops before reaching Watertown, once in Virginia and once in Pennsylvania. In Virginia, we would like to stop near the Shenandoah National Forest - a site in the Southern, Middle, or Northern section would be good. In Pennsylvania, we would like to stay somewhere in between Harrisburg and Scranton. Both places we stop must have electricity. Does anyone have any suggestions on some good places to stop? Also, are there any RV Web sites you would suggest that provide listings of places to camp in these areas?

What are some school appropriate websites I can use in the classroom? I find myself teaching computers K-8 this year. What are some good sites for the kids? I've found a few typing games that are educational enough to use in the classroom and they love it when I send them to one punch sites like isitchristmas? and doineedanumbrella. We also use internet tutorials pretty heavily, but I know this is just the tip of the iceberg. I'd like to have a whole list of appropriate sites (like games and funny things) for free days, as well as some really easy sites to teach the five-year-olds how to point and click.

Travel Filter: Planning trip from NC to Appomattox and Shenandoah Valley VA for Memorial Day weekend. Looking for off the beaten path, cultural or natural destinations and any other "must see" recommendations on food, lodging or attractions Family is doing a road trip to Shenandoah VA from NC. The only set destinations are Appomattox Court House National Historic Park and Shenandoah National Park for the nature trails (and maybe some battlefields around there).

We will probably set off from Roanoke VA Saturday morning after a late Friday night drive from NC, Appomattox most of Saturday, Shenandoah Sunday and Monday morning, arrive home Monday evening.

The plan is pretty loose, there are lots of little gaps there for a great local restaurant or interesting town or whatever attraction or little gem you can think of.

3 main things I am looking for are:

1) amazing things not many people know about (trails, museums, battlefields, mines, restaurants, beautiful drives, you name it)
2) good indoor destinations in the Shenandoah area in case the weather does not cooperate.
3) good trail recommendations in Shenandoah.

Our goal is to keep to rural/scenic driving and natural and historic oriented destinations (but any ideas welcome). We will probably stay well west of Richmond, but as long as we can hit Appomattox for most of a day and Shenandoah on another full day anything is possible.

We have done the "big" attractions in Virginia - Monticello, Williamsburg, Natural Bridge, and want to avoid them only because we don't really want to fight a big crowd. Otherwise those type of things are perfect.

Thanks I know lots of the chain motels now allow dogs but I'm wondring if anyone knows of a ranch, or farm or unusual spot that would make the drive more fun.

Looking for suggestions for alternatives to NING. Something a little more powerful. Right now my group of 80 or so is using NING and right now its only useful to schedule events for forums. Scheduling is a bear. I would like to add more resources to make the site more useful rather than just for scheduling.

I'd like to add customizable lists where people can comment on each entry in the list. I'd like to have content that expires and disappears after a certain date. I'd like to have a real calendar. I'd REALLY like to have a splash page cuz right now the URL goes directly to a login screen which is worthless for giving people an idea of who we are.

Any ideas? We're on a $0.00 budget. Also, would it be difficult to migrate that many users to a new service?

I tried Crowdvine and it seemed even more restrictive and had even less to offer.

I may be stuck.

Something is clogging up my wifi connection

How do I isolate and fix this WiFi problem on my home network? I have two computers, a desktop and a laptop, connected to my router wirelessly. When transferring a large file wirelessly from the desktop to the laptop (or to my Xbox via FTP), I'm unable to connect to any internet sites at all from the desktop. It's as if the wifi connection is being sucked up completely by the transfer. However, while this transfer is happening, I can surf the web fine from the laptop without any problems.

This all started happening only recently. That is, I used to be able to transfer a large file from the desktop across the network and still browse the internet from the desktop at the same time without any problem. I've also noticed that the same problem also happens with bittorent i.e. if I'm downloading or uploading from the desktop, even at slow speeds, I can't connect to any sites at all from the desktop but can surf from the laptop fine.

How do I fix this?

I just learned that the Al Qaeda websites have been down since September 10; they deny cyber attack, but it sure looks like it. My question: where has this been reported? I'm obviously missing some important source in my daily news fix if I'm just learning about this. (link below) Here's the link

Dating Metadata?

I'm a playa. Well, not really. But how do I keep track of people I talk to from dating sites - what IM client do I need? I message people on dating sites and Myspace and they (occasionally) give me their screenname - usually AIM or Yahoo. My memory isn't the greatest, so now I have a long list of screennames of people that I don't remember. To help, I've started tagging the "alias" or "nickname" with the screenname of the site the person belongs to, but it's not enough. If someone doesn't sign on often, I find myself asking the same boring questions (name, location, etc.) every time, and it doesn't really help making any kind of meaningful connection with people.

Obviously, besides talking to less people, my solution is a database-based IM client. I tried keeping a plain text file, but it was too ponderous to keep up with. Right now I'm using Digsby IM, and it's nice, but doesn't seem to fit the bill. I need something that can quickly and easily store data about each person I contact, and add to as I learn more about them. Having it be searchable would be nice too. Does such a thing exist? I know there are ways to do this with the official AIM and Yahoo clients, but they seem like afterthoughts.

If anyone has encountered this problem or have any other ideas (besides reminding me that I'm spreading myself too thin and meaningful relationships are formed through communication blah blah blah), I would love to hear them!

Easiest, most effective way to stand up a collaborative portal? I'm interested in standing up a collaborative portal for a new digital community. I want to take advantage of new advances in web software over the last 3-4 years.

I want to include as many of the following "features" as possible (in order of preference): membership profiles, social relationships, social bookmarking, search, content management, file storage and sharing, wiki, messaging, discussion boards, ratings & rankings, chat, sub-group creation, whiteboards, project management, time management, web-casts, surveys, polls, blogging, collaborative filtering, and Q&A.

Sure, I can implement these features from the bottom up myself - it would take awhile and be quite expensive. However, I really don't want to re-invent the wheel. I know most, if not all, of these features already exist in some form or another, either as either hosted services or separate web products.

So, a few questions:

1. First, is it even possible to mash up all of these various hosted services into something that looks like one cohesive site?

2. If yes to 1, are there patterns, best practices, examples, or support groups to help execute such a thing?

3. Otherwise, if I host it myself (to protect sensitive data), would it be easier to build it from scratch (assuming I'm an expert developer)? Or hack together a bunch of separate products?

Strange as it might sound, I am compiling a list of rooms. I am eager to draw upon the travels, explorations, and creative minds of metafilter to help flesh out the list. The main criterion is that the room should have been used for a purpose at one point, and not be used now. In other words, the room (or space) must be frozen in a moment. This means that the field is gloriously open- I am including everything from Trotsky's house in Mexico, Freud's library in London, and Anne Frank's Annex to the Hareem in Topkapi palace, the reconstructed Amber Room, Pompeii, and preserved rooms in Chernobyl.

And then there's Churchill's War Room, the Stasi Chief's Office in Berlin, and more and more and more. The rooms can be personal or impersonal, and they don't have to involve famous people or empires. I'd be especially interested in suggestions located in non-Western countries.

Hot Google on Google Action Denied!

Is there any way to embed (is that the right word?) a Google Custom Search Engine on a Google Site? I posted this to the Google Sites help group but to no avail, it is surprisingly low activity-ish.

What I want to do is have my Google Site host my Google Custom Search engine. But when I try to paste the code (given by Google) into the HTML box it errors out. Is there anyone out there who has done this or knows a work-around or am I S.O.L?

I find this really strange because it would seem like Google would be all over hosting their CSEs on their Google Sites. But what do I know?

Do you know any good sites in Spanish about literature, preferably with an emphasis on classic books or writers? Sites about both international and Spanish/Latin American literature are welcome. After recently reading a couple of book reviews in Spanish, I decided to do it more often. Being familiar with some of the books or writers discussed enhances my enjoyment, hence the "classic books" part, but I'd like to know your favorite contemporary literature/reviews/criticism site too.

Mobile phone streaming music recommendations?

Can you recommend streaming music services/sites - for mobile phones? So I've got an AT&T WM6 phone and an unlimited data plan.
I'm fine for loading my own music on it, but I need exposure to new/different music.
AT&T offers a limited (to top 40, basically) version of XM for $8/month.
Worth it?
Any other mobile music streaming services to recommend?

Then there's websites that will stream for free, like SomaFM (old favorite) and tuned.mobi (great idea, but commercials and the interface get me down) - anyone have any other recommendations?

Commercial-free listening, or at least limited, is preferred. I would post my music preferences, but I'm bored with everything I own, so need exposure to the unfamiliar. Whatever you use and/or like, I'll try.

Changes to ComCast-hosted website no longer show up when viewed online, but look fine on my end and when viewing pages on their server. Why? This has never been a problem before, but I've recently made changes to my website and posted them via Dreamweaver's FTP feature. Pages look correct on my (local) site and when I view them as uploaded to ComCast, through Dreamweaver, they also reflect the changes. But try to view them in a browser, and none of the changes show up - images, text or Flash galleries. And yes, they've been checked on other computers and other browsers.

After talking via chat to someone at ComCast (who simply disconnected me when she ran out of things to say - typical) and someone on the phone who was *completely* ineffective and didn't even understand the concept of FTP, I'm not sure what to do. I'm a web professional and this is a new one. Do I need to host my site elsewhere and just start anew? I need to get this resolved because this is my portfolio site.

Help us name our new Adult (porn) website!!!! Question inside due to graphic nature/language. Not for the easily offended. Thanks :) We are a small adult company based in Miami Florida. In the web, most companies that have paysites (we have three), bundle them up and have one full website that features all the sites (basically an all in one deal).
Alot of companies these days, have started branding all their sites with this all in one name, which increases brand appeal and awareness. Examples would be realitykings.com, bangbros.com and naughtyamerica.com

We are ready to launch our all in one site real soon, and we would like this domain to be our brand name that we umbrella all of our sites under. We have racked our brains to come up with the top name but so far the suggestions have not been that great....though we have had some funny/weird ones.

What is the name of the picture site where you can search different categories of pictures (funny, sexy, sick, etc) and when You click on a pic, it shows you THAT picture and three others below it, smaller, in a similar vein? I used to have this picture site bookmarked on my work computer. Then I switched computers and didn't bring all the bookmarks.

If you clicked on one picture (funny, sexy, sick) it would show it to you and then three others below it that were similar.

I think they had a subscription fee to see the pics in their full size. And while there were quite a few skin based pics on the site, it wasn't exclusively that. It was more like Fark. Or Digg. But with photos and cartoons and drawings.

I used to use it to find funny, interesting, weird stuff for graphic design stuff for work. Then I stopped doing that. Now I'm doing it again. It's NOT worth1000 or Flickr. So what am I remembering here?
