I just found out our web site is being spoofed. The site is outdated (we've made major changes since this was copied) but they've gone so far as to create a similar logo with a similar name as our organization (and the URL is also similar). At first I thought I'd find evidence of credit card phishing when I clicked on the donate links, but surprisingly, they still go to our real donation page (outside vendor) or to a 404. The only thing I can really see that might be the benefit is some links on the homepage that link to outside sites (ad revenue? search rankings?) and possibly e-mail harvesting if anyone actually clicks on the mailto links. Also, some of the links on the homepage are just anchor links. Is that worth a spoofed site? Is there something else that might be going on? And most importantly, what can we do about it knowing that all the domain registration info for the site is bogus (aside from the person's name, all the contact info is our own).

What is the name of the website that allows you to upload mp3's to its site, converts them to ringtone format, and then text messages them to your phone for free (after a delay) or immediately (for a donation)?

Why do most web-sites you want to check-out require you to "sign-in" with a user name and password to access there comments or free videos etc.. Is it a way to spam you or is there really any real use to the site owner?

I need a cheap, semi-professional place to hold a week-long conference for college students in late March or early April 2008. We usually hold them over the summer on college campuses and stay in the dorms, but since this one is during the school year, students are living in the dorms, so I can't find a college willing to rent us space. The conference is for about 70 people. Help! [more inside]

I am looking to build a relatively simple, focused social networking site which will not initially be open to the public and membership will be through invitation only.
Are there pre-written codes I can use, buy or otherwise take advantage of? Also, if you have made a networking site what did you learn in the process that would be good for me to know up front. [more inside]

I am trying to transfer a couple of websites from 1and1 beginner accounts to dreamhost. I usually do this by zipping or tarring the source site and then ftp.
The rub is that the 1and beginner package does not allow shell access (although the target does). I'm looking at wget but I don't see a way to make it copy hidden files, which could bite me later if there are some config files buried in there somewhere. Probably missing something real obvious here. Any ideas?

Website admin question: I want to put up a website with about 10000+ charts. I don't mind people copying images, but how can I protect against a site sucker barging in, scooping them up, and killing my bandwidth? I wish I could generate a bunch of static HTML pages with simple IMG tags, but I'm guessing this isn't possible. What might PHP have to offer for protecting my content from site suckers?

Help, Help !! If anyone has experience with Dreamweaver and setting up the “Site Definition” settings; either basic or advanced mode for “Remote Info” I desperately need your advice and it would be very much appreciated. Runbox is my web host and I use “cPannel” to manage my web files. I can’t figure out what settings to use for “FTP access”. What would my “FTP host” be and what should I put in there this field? To be honest, I’m not quite sure what a FTP is although to use Dreamweaver’s functions, I need to set this up and have not been successful. Next question; Am I correct in saying the “Host Directory” would be in the “public_html” folder in cPannel that all my web page files are located? Any advice would be appreciated. I’ve tried multiple times and days to set this up, but I must be doing something wrong. Thank you in advance for your cooperation…Orlin

Please recommend some good personal-finance related web sites. I'm looking for sites with good information on all aspects of personal finance and responsible money use. Most of what I've found is focused on investing, though, and on macroeconomics. I'm not interested in the Big Picture. I want sites that focus on the Small Pictures: dealing with debt, saving for the future, finding bargains, etc. Think Your Money or Your Life, but in web form. Big sites, little sites, weblogs, print magazines — I don't care, so long as it's focused on personal finance. Bonus points for sites with RSS feeds. [more inside]

Can anybody recommend an open source 'external' site monitoring utility for *nix? By external, I mean the tool should sit on a server that's separate to the one the site being monitored is sitting on. The tool should make regular requests to the monitored site and should send an alert if the page is not returned within a specified time.

Can anyone suggest a book, website, etc. that describes the process of breaking a problem down in order to write a program. I have struggled for far too long trying to figure out how to write a program from scratch only to be stumped by the logic involved.
This question, I think, is outside of a specific language or philosophy (Java, OOP, et al.). It's just something I haven't been able to get my head around.
