I've been having a pretty much continuous headache since this past Saturday, with varying degrees of severity, but almost never completely gone (except for short periods of time after taking advil). Shocking waves of pain upon standing after being bent over, unless I move excrutiatingly slowly. YANMD, however, is this something I need to go to see my doctor over, or something simple?

Sinus sufferers of MeFi, what in your experience is the most effective over-the-counter sinus medication? I do not have some extreme sinus condition, but I am very tired of feeling stuffy all the time and blowing my nose ten to fifteen times a day. The meds must be available in Canada.

I've read about amoebas that
enter your brain through your sinuses and possibly killed two women in Louisiana in 2011. I live in a major metropolitan area (NYC) and my hot water comes to me through the same system that heats our big pre-war apartment building. The hot water pipes are actually too hot to touch.

Hello fellow Metafilterians, now that allergy season is upon us, does anyone recommend the best OTC med for: pressure on the eyes, chest congestion, stuffy nose, and sore throat? It's much worse in the morning. Coughing up yellow awfulness (sorry, gross). Claritin and Mucinex-D do NOT work. Sudafed works like a charm but knocks me out, literally for 2 days. Not sure what's out there, haven't had allergies in a couple of years.

The warnings on the Wal-Itin D box say "do not take more than once every 24 hours." Most medications warn against taking more than X every Y hours, but they are usually hedging their bets. Is this kind of medication different, and, if it is, can I take something else that might help without worrying about contraindication?

Can you help narrow down what sort(s) of doctor(s) to see and what to investigate, given these symptoms? All symptoms have cropped up within the last two years. Before that, I felt healthy most of the time. Primary care doc has been little help, and most of the specialists seem to focus only on the symptoms within their own areas of expertise.

Too frequently, my sinuses ambush me at night. I'm fine throughout the day, then as soon as I hit the pillow--bam--something inside stuffs my nose for no decent reason other than to give me a headache that keeps me up half the night. Doc's X-rays show no abnormalities in my sinus cavities, but if I take his prescribed Allegra D too late in the day, the pseudoephedrine prevents me from sleeping. Do I need to move to a drier climate, or is there some miracle home remedy that I'm missing?

MiseryFilter: I have had a dry cough for about 6 weeks that has gotten increasingly worse. I am seeing an allergy specialist as I already know I have allergies. For the last two weeks, I have been on Nasonex, Singulair, and Allegra. Most nights I cannot lie down due to coughing and have to sleep propped up on the couch.
I have been doing the neti pot for the last few days, but it's not like tons of stuff is getting washed out of my sinuses when I do it. It just seems to go in one side and out the other. Then I resume coughing a little whlie later. Also, they started me on Flovent as of Monday. I think it's maybe starting to help, but not sure.

Why does my nose hurt after a cold? I'm starting to get over a cold from hell - lots of nasal congestion (went through two boxes of Kleenex). I'm finally on my feet, but the right side of my nose - starting about where the cartilage/bone starts - is really sore. Any pressure on that side of my nose causes a throbbing pain.
