My mother was a secondary school teacher, and roughly 15-20 years ago I was reading a book of hers that involved a classroom game or experiment or lesson where each child in the class followed a set of individual instructions, passing information around to other kids and making decisions and so on. The net result of all of this was that the whole classroom would end up effectively running a program to play a game - I *think* it was noughts and crosses, but it was a reasonably complex program with maybe 20 separate sets of instructions for different people. I'm looking for example of digital or video games - either online, free, commercial, or bought from a shop, on a PC, mac or games console - which simulate the experience of being a student, academic, lecturer or professor from an academic, social, or economic perspective. For example, the Sims 3 University Life expansion pack gives a (relatively shallow) social perspective on academic life as a student. Are there any others, especially ones with more depth or accuracy?
As part of our schools enrichment program, I'd like to do an intro to global politics and economics for 12-16 year old students. As a culminating activity, I'd like to run a few different simulations to give the students a chance to put their new knowledge to work. More snowflake specifics inside. [more inside]
Help me simulate the internet, without the internet! [more inside]
Does this exist? I want a 3D simulation program where I can experiment with gears (including bevel gears), slots and slides, eccentric cranks, levers, maybe even chain drives and belts and pulleys. Ideally I'd be able to change sizes, numbers/shapes of teeth, location of the drive shaft, etc. to see how those changes affect the motion of the gadget. [more inside]
I remember playing a great computer strategy game on my ZX Spectrum back in the 1990s (although perhaps the game is older) which simulated being in command of the US Strategic Defense Initiative. Most of the gameplay involved doling out funding dollars to different SDI research & development projects (X-Ray satellites, high energy lasers, ABM bases etc.). You could choose whether the US president and Soviet Premier were hawkish, dovish or a mix (but they could not be both doves). There were DEFCON warning levels. All games culminated in a nuclear war with a Soviet first strike launch. There was a map with the missile swarms tracked. You had to scramble to set the red 3-letter code to activate the SDI system in time. You could take charge of individual SDI platforms yourself or just let them run automatically. You could also OK the wholesale launch of US nukes in retaliation. What is this game? (games that this is definitely not inside) [more inside]

Anyone got clues for where I (a) get hold of SimLife and (b) get it running in OS X? I'm happy to put together a Wineskin or it, or run it in VMWare, if the Windows version is the way to go.
I wonder if there's a game or a program that simulates building construction. I am interested in something like STARCRAFT or LEMMINGS for building-construction simulation. [more inside]
What are the best automata (formal language theory) simulators? This is mainly for teaching purposes. I have used JFLAP in past iterations of the class in question, and my google searches suggest this is still the best option, but I was wondering if there is anything newer and better that I'm not finding. Details below. [more inside]

I want to know about the best simulation games out there. Preferably regular (Steam/disc-based) rather than online games - if you know of a farming game that isn't Farmville - or Agricola - I'd be up for that. [more inside]

I would like to write some basic software that, without any user input at all, simulates an event such as a crew traveling in space. What do I need to learn in order to get from the "if launch was successful then print 'CONGRATULATIONS'" stage to the "if crew member #3 is depressed and she is co-pilot, then set $mistake_likelihood higher" level of detail? I am searching for examples of The Infinite, or the immeasurably large, in our mythologies and archetypes. I am also interested in the categories of Truth which came out of the emergence of Western, ontological thought. Does the trust in a rationally conceivable reality deny us the infinity of the mythological realm? By rooting ourselves in the present, and denying atemporal mythologies, do we also deny the infinite origins from where we came? [more inside]
