What is this intriguing device I noticed at a friend's house? Friend has no idea. It's about 6 inches in length. It was patented by Holland Mfg of Willamantic, CT, and a Google search suggests it might have something to do with 19th century silk manufacturing. Ideas?
I've come across a website exporting used silk and rayon saris from India. A few seem in poor condition, or have some obvious stains. But some appear pristine. My question is, one, is there not a market for second-hand saris in India? Two, what renders a sari unwearable, apart from stains and rips and obvious wear? Like, would you not be seen dead in a fabric pattern from 5 years ago? And three, would you not want your mother's or grandmother's vintage silk saris, and if not, wouldn't somebody else? I can't understand why it makes economic sense to export this stuff: the garments on the website seem too cheap for 5 yards of vivid silk, even if the buyer has to discard portions of it.

I have a weird problem: my knees get really cold, really easily. I live in LA, and even in the middle of this unusually warm summer, the slight temperature drop at night is enough that by morning my knees are freezing and I have to put on warm sweat pants (much to the bewilderment of my wife, it being the middle of summer, and us not having AC). i'm trying to hang guitars and basses on a brick wall. i have instrument hangers already, but drilling a million holes into brick seems like A BAD IDEA so i thought i would hang a board (cedar, i ALSO already have it) on the wall (many fewer screw-holes) and then just screw the guitar holders to the plank. the plank is 5.5" wide and 1 1/4" deep (and 6 feet long) and really pretty, so i'm ALMOST happy. The ends are really roughly cut though (despite my best sanding job), and i was hoping to cover them up with something (copper? silk?) so it looks a bit less like i, um, hung a plank on the wall, and more like i'm incredibly crafty and awesome. what should i use for the ends of these boards? google is not helping, but maybe i'm searching using the wrong words(?). thank you!

My lovely boyfriend did me the wonderful favour of doing my laundry for me while i was at work! Unfortunately, that favour included machine washing and drying a 100% silk dress, and a 100% wool sweater. Help! (he also saw the not-so-nice underwear and the spanx, but that's a whole other story.) I own this down alternative comforter. It causes me to wake up with sweaty legs, so I'm looking for a replacement. This article recommends that people in my situation should go with silk or cotton instead of down. Is there an advantage to do that over just getting a thinner down comforter? Note: my bedroom ranges from 62-65 at night.
