A year or two ago there was a heavily funded mobile startup out of Silicon Valley - I think it had $100 million or more in funding - that never quite got off the ground. I feel like it had a simple one-word name. Anyone remember?

I'm a physicist, working to get hired in the tech sector in Silicon Valley. I'm an experimentalist having worked on collider and free electron laser experiments. I've done a lot of coding, most of it in C++ and Python, scripting in bash etc. The problems I solved, though, seem very different from ones relevant to the tech industry. My experience doesn't seem to count for much!

So I've lived in beautiful San Francisco, California since 2005, but I've recently started a job down in Sunnyvale. I can take Caltrain down there, but it's an hour's trip plus half an hour on either end to get from home/work to the Caltrain station in question. This is not sustainable, so I'd like to move south. I'm 31, single, and a city boy from way back, so moving to The Suburbs gives me pause. Also, I sold the only car I've ever owned back in '05 shortly after I moved here. So I have two questions:

I am considering a job in Silicon Valley venture capital. I have a background in traditional East Coast banking. I am confident in all the technical issues, I understand the job well, and I like the partners. Help me understand VC culture so I can decide if I want the position and so I don't make an ass of myself.

So I'm going to be interviewing with a major Internet company in California sometime within the next few weeks, and I'm excited, but also scared to death. I've heard that several of the "big name" companies have very rigorous interviewing processes, and I've done a ton of Googling on the subject, but only seem to find information relevant to interviewing at Microsoft (which I'm not). Certainly some of you have who read MeFi have been through this a few times. What should I expect? How can I best prepare? HELP!
