I'm trying to find a watch that does not beep when I press the button to illuminate the watch face. I also need it to have an alarm and to be somewhat water resistant (suitable for jogging/hiking in the rain). It would be awesome if this watch cost less than $50. Any suggestions?

I keep thinking about solitude. I find myself drawn to the idea of a hermetic retreat lasting a week or more. I think I would like to be off the grid and perhaps even verbally silent for that time. I find myself imagining a facility in the woods of British Columbia that provides for the simplest of material needs and enables real solitude and introspection.
I have found several such retreats on the web but it seems they primarily religion-based and I am thinking I might be uncomfortable in such a situation as I am an atheist.
Have you had such an experience? Can you recommend any facilities that might enable such time? I would love to hear any insights you might have on the topic.

MedicalConfusionFilter: Do I have hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) and/or reflux, or not? There's at least 2-4 diagnostic gadgets out there for measuring digestive pH. One of them ought to confirm it for sure, no? [more inside]

What did early (1900-1920) french film directors actually do? I get the sense from my research that early film directors in France were more like what one associates with producers nowadays. The "director" chose the script, chose the actors and the budget, and then left the execution to a cameraman who basically filmed everything as if he were recording live theater. This explains how someone like Louis Feuillade could "direct" hundreds of films each year. Is this assumption correct? [more inside]

So, as some of you may remember, I have a roommate. Usually we get along great, but we bicker about once every two months and every time we do it triggers all sorts of anxiety for me. I'd like to hear some advice from people who have similar issues. [more inside]

How can I remember to always put my mobile phone on silent before meetings or seminars? And to turn the sound back on when the meeting is over? Any useful tricks? I don't seem to have a problem remembering this in artistic environments, only in work environments.

So, I have a roommate. I love her, we usually get along just fine, but recently we argued over some financial stuff and now we're not really on speaking terms. How the heck should I handle this? (Long post, long story) [more inside]

What is the earliest generally-accepted use in commercial cinema of the following three shots: a lens-based zoom, in or out; a traveling shot using a dolly to follow a scene's protagonist (as in moving from room to room laterally); and a traveling shot using a dolly to effectively create a zoom, in which the framing of the protagonist becomes tighter as a result of a shorter distance to the subject?
