Where to stay and what to see in Berlin?

Where should I stay and what should I do in Berlin for a 4 day trip? (Single, clean, safe, cheap, easy to get to the major sights.) Heading to Germany to see a friend who recently moved there, but going to spend some time in Berlin first, never been there. Single, late 20s gay traveler, see the museums, shop a bit, maybe grab a drink. Neighborhoods/sights/attractions to avoid or not to miss? Thanks!

Seeing New Zealand in a bit less than a week?

Five days in New Zealand, starting from Christchurch and visiting Wellington somewhere in the middle. How can I narrow down my options for fabulous things to see and do? Very shortly, I will be leaving for New Zealand. I'm flying into and out of Christchurch, and I'll have five days to travel around in between. I've read the previous AskMe threads on things to see in New Zealand, and each one just leaves me more overwhelmed than before with all the possibilities. How can I choose? Is there one place, or a few, that exemplify New Zealand's best qualities? How should I calculate the tradeoffs between travel time and amazingness?

The one definite point on my itinerary is that I'll be visiting friends in Wellington. Currently I'm planning to get there from Christchurch by taking the train up the coast, but I'm open to other suggestions (should I fly instead?) I'd like to see and hike around on some of New Zealand's famously spectacular scenery. I wouldn't mind spotting some interesting wildlife. I'm not sure of the best ways to get from place to place, so advice on that point is particularly helpful. Please help me develop a do-able itinerary!

(Bonus question: where can I get some really good coffee on my travels?)

What's Fun for Teenagers in San Francisco?

What are fun things for teenagers to see and do in San Francisco? My niece (13) and nephew (16) are coming for a week-long visit. What would be fun for them to do? Would something like going to Alcatraz, be cool, boring, or boring now but cool when they remember it later?

We're already planning trips to the King Tut exhibit, Santa Cruz boardwalk, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I thought of a Giants or A's game but they don't like baseball.

Somehow, a friend has roped me into an eight-day, old-school Southwestern road trip, from Kansas to Arizona and back, on July 22-30. What's good to see on this route? The pins mark overnight stays. We're already seeing the following:

Painted Desert and Meteor Crater, AZ
Arcosanti (the future, as envisioned by the 1970's)
Sedona, AZ (to "explore the red rock formations and new age nutjob culture")
Grand Canyon
Navajo National Monument
(drive through) Monument Valley
Goosenecks State Park
Arches National Park
Cisco, UT
Pikes Peak
Garden of the Gods Park

Can you tell he's a geography major? Anyway, I'm a hardline college-town Northeasterner, and my idea of a tourist attraction is more like the Rose Center or Toscanini's. Does the hive mind have any thoughts on how to balance this trip out a bit with some cool additional destinations? I might even be able to convince him to jettison something if you guys come up with something really juicy. Good places to eat are especially welcome, because we won't be packing much food of our own. I'm also especially eager to find some decent out-in-the-boonies attractions to break up the insanely long drives between the bigger destinations. Thanks in advance.

Must See Mt Gambier and Adelaide - what shouldn't I miss?

SouthAustraliaFilter: I live in Melbourne and am driving to Adelaide over the Easter weekend via the Great Ocean Rd and stopping in Mt Gambier for one night. I know about the Blue Lake in Mt Gambier - what other essential things should I do/see in the area? I will also be in Adelaide for three/four days. I haven't been there since I was a kid, so I will be happy just to explore a city I don't really know anything about - except that it has a lot of churches and pubs.

I'm planning a road trip this spring break originating in Portland, Oregon and ending up somewhere within 900 miles one-way; I am particularly drawn to the Southwest, and Utah/Arizona. Can you help me think of interesting or less obvious ideas? I've thought of Great Basin, Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon (been there before but it's been a long time), Glen Canyon...I'm interested in less-obvious ideas, or anyone with a strong familiarity with the more remote parts of Utah, Arizona and Nevada. Colorado and Wyoming are also possibilities, so long as they are within 900 miles one-way.

Additionally, camping possibilities are a plus, though I don't think we are looking to really *rough it*.

Unique sights in urban San Jose, Costa Rica I've got a few days in San Jose, Costa Rica. We've done many of the standard wilderness trips while here and would now like to do some urban exploring. Amazing places to show overseas vistors in Sydney? HI All,

I've lived in Sydney most of my life and I've had no trouble in the past entertaining overseas visitors - Blue Mountains, Opera House, Harbour Bridge etc.

But I have a friend from overseas who is living here, they have done all the standard tourist things (other than the mountains, they come from a very mountainous region so the piddly Blue Mountains is unlikely to impress them). I'm looking for something out of the ordinary - for me as well! Maybe National Parks (of which I know very little about), or even weekend trips with a few friends (Hunter Valley).

What is there to do in Newport, RI? Any sights, tours, or restaurants we shouldn't miss? My fiance and I will be in Newport, RI next weekend for a wedding. We have about a day and a half that's not booked up with wedding-related activities.

Thanks to this Ask MeFi, we know how to get to the city from the Providence Airport.

What do we do once we get there? We've checked out the official website, but nothing really jumped out.

A little about us: we're in our mid-30s. We like historical walking tours (like this?), pubs that pour proper pints of Guinness (like this?), and eating good seafood al fresco.

Any daytime sailing tour recommendations? (Is SightSailing any good?)

And finally...are we foolish to think we don't need a rental car? We're staying at the Best Western Mainstay Inn (just north of Rt. 138), which appears to be walking distance from the Historic Downtown Area. Is our hotel in a pedestrian friendly area or are we going to have to play Frogger across an interstate to get downtown?

Input on these and any other enjoyable diversions are appreciated.

What to do in Chicago?

So we've got one day to spend in Chicago and we want to make the most of it... I'm going to meet up with some friends from Indiana by way of train in Chicago, and unfortunately only have one day to spend there... I've never been there and they've only gone once or twice. Any suggestions on how to best spend our time? We will be taking public transportation for the most part. We'll probably be there from early morning to late night... I drink, but they do not so any night life suggestions would have to be friendly to that. We're all geeks, in fact one idea we had tossed around was to check out Alder Planetarium if that tells you anything - so you can keep that in mind for ideas, ha. Haven't seen these guys in a few years so we're probably just looking to chill, catch up, and hang out. Ideas on great places to eat are welcome too!

Other than the record and book stores, what's not to miss in Chapel Hill, NC and surrounding parts? I've checked threads here, here, and here, but was wondering if there were more suggestions for my situation. I'll be in the area with my mother for a cousin's wedding, and we'll have most of midday Saturday to kill before hopping into formalwear.

My mother's not much of a walker, so scenic drives and parking-rich shops would be ideal. My mom likes pottery and other arts & crafts, and I'm willing to go anywhere with rich photographic opportunities. We've already grown bored with the colleges on a previous trip. I'm planning to strike out on my own for a half hour around Franklin Street for shops mentioned in the other threads, but what else might interest us?

I'm making a road trip from Tulsa, Ok to Palatine,Il near the end of august... I've made this trip as a young teen and I seem to remember there were a lot of signs for roadside attractions along the way, especially in Missouri. Is there anything worth stopping to see? I'll be traveling with my parents (early 70's), and I understand they want the drive to be somewhat leisuely, making a one day trip into two. Thanks for your responses.

Hi everyone - first time questioner, and have a two-part question re travel. Am from Melbourne Australia and am travelling with my wife on holiday to Canada and the US from Mid-Sept to Mid-Nov.

One of our stops in Canada is in Edmonton in early-October. We're staying at the mall, of all places! But wondering about suggestions of sights and things to see in Edmonton itself ... we are staying 5 days.

Second part - we're in Montreal for a few days as well, including our anniversary. As a surprise I wanted to find a place that's romantic, not hugely expensive and not hugely ostentatious. We're pretty willing to eat a wide range of foods, so that isn't a problem. Any suggestions?

I'll be in Pittsburgh, PA, for a few days next week on business. Any places I should visit, things to do, places to eat, drink, etc.? I was up there once before in January, and didn't get too far away from the hotel, which made for a less than fun visit. I'll be staying downtown (next to the convention center) and working on 7th street. Any places to eat or drink that I shouldn't miss? From dirt bars to museums to fancy restaurants--everything is fair game.

I’m going to be in Boston for a few days. I’ve never been before & I want to make the most of it. [MI] I put together a page of what I want to do here, and I think I have most of the major attractions covered that can reasonably be seen in 3 days time + that are reasonably close to each other. I grouped (or tried to) them by neighborhood.

But, I know I am missing a lot of wonderful places, where the food quality and the prices aren't completely spoiled by tourism.

I'll be with a group of ~8 people, all in their early-mid twenties, and I'd really like to find them some good bars/clubs/shows to go to at night. I'm completely clueless here.

Roadside attractions along I-77?

WestVirginiaTravelFilter: Looking for a good road-side attraction along I-77 [mi] Over the holidays my family will be traveling from Michigan to North Carolina with a 12 month old. The trip takes 12 hours without a baby, and so we are considering trying to break the trip into 2 days. The logical place to stop is somewhere like Charleston or Beckley (or somewhere close), but Parkersburg and Wytheville, VA are also possibilities. Does anyone have a recommendation for a fun baby-friendly stop that takes just a few hours in the afternoon along I-77? The Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley looks interesting, but it is closed in December.
